Melanie Martinez is widely recognized for her intricate and detailed production concepts for shows. Undeniably so, Melanie is dedicated to their craft. Since 2012, Melanie has been known to create alter-egos and alternate universes through her music and childhood-related themes.
Her debut album Crybaby, released in 2015, was full of dark themes but written with child-like lyrics. This can be exhibited through one of her most well-known tracks, “Dollhouse,” where the lyrics set the scene of a flawless family when the family is realistically struggling with affairs, drug use, and control. The artist’s second album, K-12, reveals the same Crybaby character stepping outside her family and love life and looking at life retrospectively as a narrator.
This year, Martinez returned to the music scene as a new alter ego with her third studio album and last record within the Crybaby trilogy, Portals. In an interview with Brady Radio at 103.5 KISSFM, Melanie explained how she has committed to a rebirth of her renowned ‘Crybaby’ character. Her new record represents a significant change from her past life and individualism.
The Knockturnal had a chance to check out Melanie on her Portals World Tour at New York City’s renowned Radio City Music Hall. Martinez’s vision for her new album and era was evident from the first few steps of walking into the venue. Everywhere fans were covered in glitter, fairy wings, and elaborate costumes.
Fans were truly thrilled to see Melanie hit the stage again. The screams of exhilarated and emotional fans filled the halls of Radio City as Melanie approached the stage in her alter-ego costume. The 28-year-old artist hit the stage with her new look, emulating a fairy-nymph-like creature for the performance, as she performed her first song of the night, “DEATH.”
Fans knew every lyric to each song. The production and set design evoked energy that represented Melanie’s vivid and imaginative world of absurdity, identity, psychedelic creativity, and transformation that are inherent in Melanie’s expression.
Some of the memorable song performances of the night included “VOID,” one of the album’s singles, and “BATTLE OF THE LARYNX.” These tracks illuminated the crowd and brought the audience to life. Her set was full of ethereal elements of forests, including spiderwebs, candles, and floral themes. Martinez’s show featured talented musicians and dancers who played strong and immersive roles within the production.
Melanie’s overall production embodies a mature contemporary interpretation of what could only be described as a reminiscent image of a modern-day Pixie Hollow. Her interpretation of fawn and faerie-like images on the screen behind her reflected an adult-oriented perspective.
