AXE invited to attend two awesome presentations at #NYFWM. Check out our reviews below:

Matiere, derived from the French word meaning “material” or “subject matter,” is a menswear brand founded in 2013. Matiere’s Autumn/ Winter 2017 collection, titled “VANDALS,” was presented at this year’s NYFW Men’s. Co-founded by Scot Shandalove and H. Choi, this season’s collection is inspired by punk rock, and pays homage to this historical movement and era. Plaids, checkers, cargo pants and black Dr. Martens boots dominated the collection’s looks across the board. The show displayed eleven unique looks, and proved to be incredibly multi-faceted: featuring a mash-up of fibers, silhouettes and washes. It showed off Japanese wools, fur accents, and waterproof parkas to withstand any weather. Matiere aims for “the seamless integration of form, function and comfort into their sleek modern aesthetic as they continue to push the boundaries of material and production.”

-Jinny Choi

This week, Jahnkoy design Maria Kazakova presented her Fall Winter 2017 collection at New York Fashion Week: Men’s. Kazakova cites a “sacred and spiritual” view of fashion as an inspiration for her work, as well as sustainable practices- using upcycled garments to form her creations. This season, Axe Haircare styled the show, and “Clean Cut Look: Classic Pomade”, as well as “Messy Look: Flexible Paste” in order to achieve the look. Kazakova suggested a very natural mood for the styling, so occasionally models were presented with the hair they prefer to wear. The collection itself looked anything but natural, with oversized head pieces, face masks, basketball-jersey-esque oversized shirts, Swarovski crystals, and lots of fringed trim. Kazakova says of her fashions in an exclusive interview with the Impression “I have a very personal connection with the garments that I wear. It is a second skin, an armor, a language”. It is very obvious she is trying to speak to us through her designs, the question is though, what is she trying to communicate?
