The film is a dark comedy that follows Reef Hawk, who is played by Keanu Reeves. He is a beloved star who has dealt with a drug addiction that was kept secret from the world, except for the people closest to him. While maintaining his sobriety, he has become transfixed on maintaining the lovable image the world sees him as, until that managed façade is threatened.
A mysterious video has been brought to his attention, endangering the crafted persona he has portrayed to the world. He must now determine which actions from his past are at risk of being exposed. With the help of his childhood friends, Kyle and Xander, played by Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer, as well as his crisis lawyer, Ira, played by Jonah Hill, they craft a plan to try and get to the bottom of this extortion plot.
Throughout this journey, Reeves’ character begins to reevaluate his priorities and confronts the fear of public perception.
The Knockturnal spoke with Laverne Cox, who plays the role of Virginia Allen Greene, who’s an attorney hired to help figure out what Reef Hawk is being blackmailed for. The film combines themes of accountability and self-acceptance while incorporating humor and a mix of different personalities.
Cox states, “accountability is about what are my actions going forward, and that’s also what something Reef has to contin with.” The humor throughout the film helps make the deeper conversations relatable and easier to digest as a viewer.
