“I think if you’re going to enter, you need to really dance for your life,” renowned choreographer and director Parris Goebel said. Goebel collaborated with Lady Gaga to bring “Abracadabra’s” music video to life. Now, Mother Monster is calling on you to be a part of her world of mayhem.
Lady Gaga is partnering with Mastercard to host a one-of-a-kind dance contest as a way to connect with and celebrate her fans. All you have to do is learn the video’s choreography and post it on social media using the hashtag #MastercardGagaContest by Sunday, February 16 before midnight. Once selected, fans will meet on set in Los Angeles to recreate a fan version of “Abracadabra” and win an invitation to Lady Gaga’s Club Mayhem dance party.
The music video’s motto is dance or die. “We’re looking for passion and heart,” Goebel said.
“Abracadabra” is a theatrical masterpiece with multiple visuals and themes. “I think people just see it as choreography but there’s a lot of layers to it,” Goebel admitted when asked about the video’s message.
“We’re playing with the different sides of Gaga and how they all coexist. You can see that in the music video, it’s like her versus herself and two different versions of her. There’s a story of innocence in there as well as power. Pressure makes diamonds, right? It’s really beautiful to see her in the beginning kind of looking angelic, pure, and innocent and stepping into the world for the first time. Near the bridge where she comes through the doors with the smoke, she actually steps into her power and then she dances for life at the end. So there’s a lot of messages of that and sometimes just in life where you’re in that position where someone is challenging your power,” Goebel said.
“Abracadabra” is the third single from the Mayhem album. Supporters are anticipating that it will have Lady Gaga’s iconic Fame Monster era written all over it.
“I heard the song a long time ago and was like ‘this is a smash’ so I was already really excited to create to this song for her,” Goebel said in response to her approach for “Abracadabra”.
“I feel like I became a little kid again. My imagination just ran wild like storytime,” Goebel said.
“Choreography is all about style, perspective, and storytelling, “ Goebel shared as advice for those looking to enter the contest and for aspiring choreographers.
“If everyone is going right, go left. I think just doing your best to create your own language and figure out what makes you unique and just turn that up. Put a magnifying glass on it and make that your brand. Figure out what sets you apart and be confident in it whether people are watching you or not.”
Mayhem is set to release on March 7.
