You may have seen Netflix’s Tinder Swindler but just wait because Netflix’s new limited series, Inventing Anna proves that Anna Delvey walked so Simon Leviev good run.
Creator and showrunner, Shonda Rhimes brings us the true story about a journalist, Vivian [Anna Chlumsky] eager to redeem her career takes on the investigative case of Anna Delvey, [Julia Garner] the Instagram legend and German heiress who stole the hearts of New York’s social scene – and stole their money as well. One has to ask the question, was Anna New York’s biggest con woman or simply the product of the American dream? In the process of learning who Delvey really is, Vivian falls victim to Anna’s charming ways which close friends Kacy Duke [Laverne Cox], Rachel [Katie Lowes] and Neff [Alexis Floyd] can relate to. The series is inspired by the New York Magazine article “How an Aspiring ‘It’ Girl Tricked New York’s Party People — and its Banks” by Jessica Pressler, who also serves as a producer.
At the top of each episode of the series comes the message, “everything is completely true, besides the parts that are made up,” but don’t be fooled, this alarming tale is absolutely factual with a little flair for entertainment purposes. If you are unaware of the case, Anna Delvey is in fact a real woman who was able to defraud banks, hotels, and wealthy acquaintances between the years of 2013 and 2017. Julia Garner was able to meet Delvey in preparation for her role and was pleasantly surprised by the money-making mastermind stating, “the thing that I was taken aback by most was how bubbly she is, how charming she is, how likable she is and how she can go from light to dark in a matter of seconds.” One thing is clear, Delvey has a way of roping people in and pulling at their heartstrings. Arian Moayed who plays Todd, the overachieving and highly stressed attorney for Delvey has shared that Anna is still in constant communication with her attorney even now.
Of course all the information surrounding the somewhat mildly discussed case is available online, however the series Inventing Anna brings the story to life in a riveting, nail biting, bingeworthy kind of way. The limited series is available on Netflix on February 11.
