John Mulaney teams up with A24 and Netflix fir an hour long children’s comedy music special, titled “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch” last Monday at the Metrograph.
The cast includes John Mulaney as well as a group of 15 children ages 8-13, who, as Mulaney joked, “are more talented than me.”
John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch is a fun special appropriate for all ages, and will especially be enjoyed by adults. Together, Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch tackle all sorts of issues such as their biggest fears.
It features musical numbers performed by the children themselves, surrounding topics such as: grandmother’s new boyfriend, and when will we ever use algebra in real life? These are just a few of the themes you can expect in this hilarious upcoming special.
The special has the same tone as public education programs for children, with a much more comedic tone. It takes basic children’s education shows and flips them around by becoming self-aware and making a joke of the concept rather than the show.
The reason this works is because it hasn’t been done before, at least in an easily accessible way. Broadway shows can be expensive and most of the time children don’t want to sit through a two hour show. Now, you can put this on with your family and laugh along with them together for a little over an hour.
As for adults, there will be more than plenty to laugh about. The adult humor isnt as much dispersed as it is integrated into the children’s jokes and side comments.
Special guest stars include: Richard Kind, Natasha Lyonne and Jake Gyllenahal, the last of which performs a hilarious sketch as “Mr. Music,” a musician capable of making music in the weirdest ways.
Overall the music, performances, and comedy are all there and keeps you laughing until the end.
John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch is set to release globally on Netflix on December 24.
