NBC’s New Amsterdam season finale exploded out of no where. Literally with such a horrific incident, fans are dying to know what to expect for season two.

While he didn’t give any big hints, on April 29 Jocko Sims turned a press luncheon into storytime at the cool kids table. The charismatic on camera cardiothoracic surgeon put his lab coat aside to provide some insight on Dr. Floyd Reynolds’ future and love life; as well as who he is off camera. By the end of the conversation, turns out his college dream to become a doctor is being lived out through his career as on one of NBC’s most talked about shows where all of the extras are actual doctors according to Sims.

As lunch was served, the conversations brewed casually and very naturally. Sims admits he was stunned at the audiences reaction to his character rejecting Dr. Bloom (Janet Montgomery) because she was white. Despite his initial uneasiness with the dialogue, Sims figured many black women in the audience would have been pleased with the doctors decision. However, many were offended.

When it comes to season two, he’s looking forward to fans seeing Dr.Reynolds’ romantic side. Other than that, no more details were spilled about the upcoming season.

The Knockturnal: We all know you as an actor but I did my research and I saw that you’re also into music and love cooking. When you’re not on screen, what’s your life like?

Jocko Sims: I dabbled in music, I’m sure you found some music with some questionable lyrics. I created a comedy series about a group of guys trying to make it in the music business, so for a little while I was a rapper. I always like to produce music for fun but we created all these songs before we knew it we had two albums.

The Knockturnal: What was your favorite song?

Jocko Sims: That’s hard. That’s like picking your favorite kid. One of the songs I produced was called “Go Crazy” and I thought that was my favorite because I produced it and I was inspired by Pharrell. I love Pharrell and I love The Neptunes and N.E.R.D and I love that sound. It’s a pop/rock sound to it so that was fun. That show (All Guys Are Assholes) we needed up not taking it anywhere. It would’ve been a hit, but it didn’t work out.

As for as the cooking, I went to the college of “YouTube School of Cooking.” Listen, I’m really something special.

The Knockturnal: What’s your best dish?

Jocko Sims: My favorite one I like to cook, I learned this one on YouTube from chef John who has a site called Food Wishes, he has this Italian dish that’s chicken, sausage and peppers and some potatoes. I like to have mine over rice. I don’t know if you have any roots in Louisiana or the South, but it kind of reminds me (of that). It’s good and it’s as simple as that, there’s no name for the dish it’s just chicken, sausage and peppers. Oh! And my gumbo!

The Knockturnal: What’s the future like for Jocko Sims?

Jocko Sims: I definitely want to get more into directing and producing, I love wearing those hats. I do enjoy acting but I want to start telling some stories. I’’m actually writing a movie with two writers and producers from these Netflix series. They wrote Dear White People and Umbrella Academy which is on Netflix starring Ellen Paige, so those are my writing partners and we wrote this comedy movie that’s just so, so fantastic. So look out for that soon , I’ll be staring in it as well.

Back in February, the show was renewed for a second season due to its impressive ratings. Hopefully it keeps its 10 p.m. time slot on Tuesdays. Be sure to tune in and binge watch the first season if needed.
