The Knockturnal was honored to sit at the feet of highly accomplished art activists and trailblazers. While listening front row on the importance of African-American art, and its impact on our planet, thanks to Martell’s revival of Loïs Mailou Jones’s work and philosophy, the rebirth of the Little Paris Group came to fruition! Aiming to produce mentorship in modern-day popular art, a meeting of the minds, and magic, took place on Wednesday, March 23, 2023, in Brooklyn, New York at the Bishop Gallery. Headlining this revival was none other than the eclectic, aristocratic singer, and actress, Janelle Monáe!
The Little Paris Group was created by Loïs Mailou Jones, to administer a safe, uplifting place for black artists to create, learn, conspire, and inspire each other. With this intention, Martell decided to pick up the torch and created Martell’s Little Paris Group. Composed of Janelle Monáe, Emonee Larussa, Blue the Great, Dr. Fahamu Pecou and Sophia Victo , members of the group did just that! Following the launch, Martell’s Little Paris Group planned to get to work and teach a one on one course as leading experts in their respective disciplines.
Martell’s Little Paris Group of mighty artists complimented each other effortlessly. Each panelist dug deep to provide their hard-earned gems and wisdom learned in their professional careers. They provided heartfelt memories and pivotal moments that enabled and secured their seat on the panel. Totaling countless awards, and partnerships, with some of the hottest names on the planet, the level of sincerity and belonging made the launch party feel more like an intimate powwow for a call to action!
Although Janelle Monáe was the special guest, she still paid homage to the longest-living Harlem renaissance artist Loïs Mailou Jones in this much-needed celebration. For 60 years (the 1920s-1980s) Jones had no choice but to peacefully push back against racism and gender discrimination in America by living in the shadows of her career! Unfortunately, without white representation, she would not have been able to participate in competitions, galleries, and history. Over 30 years later, her work has resurfaced in exhibits and installations, such as Martha’s Vineyard Museum, the Atlanta International Airport, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and the Bishop Gallery.
All things considered. The Loïs Mailou Jones revival was so much more than a gallery. It was the rekindling of a movement!! So be sure to keep an eye on these shining stars as they continue to define their dreams, and careers!
