A night of laughter for a good cause!
On Tuesday, January 15th, HBO hosted a night of comedy at The Gramercy Theatre to celebrate the third season of their hit comedy series Crashing. The night featured performances from some of the stars of the show, both recurring and guest roles, and the host of the night was none other than the lead of the show, Pete Holmes. Pete was a great host, getting the crowd ready for some great jokes. He primarily did a lot of observational humor ranging from what his experiences were like at an airport all the way to how some old songs have very suspicious themes. What goes into Pete’s charm is that he finds himself funny and starts laughing at his jokes, sometimes even before the crowd gets the joke. When other comedians do this, it would seem like a break in character. But when Pete does it, it better sets up the joke and invites more laughter to his set.
Following his set was another actor on this show, Jamie Lee. Jamie was great and told a lot of jokes about what it is like to be married, especially what it’s like to be married to her husband. She definitely had a great perspective on life, being a pessimistic one, and had the ability to fully engage the audience in whatever joke she was saying. Next up, was rising star and comedian, Jaboukie Young-White. On the heels of his residency on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Jaboukie is taking the comedy world by storm with this nonchalant and almost apathetic comedic style. His material focused a lot on what it is like being young and gay in this time, but was relatable and funny to every other demographic.
After this, comedian John Mulaney took the stage and delivered a tight performance, focusing a lot on how he looks like the star of the show The Flash. His energy was extremely compelling. After John left the stage, legendary comedian, Dave Attell came on. His jokes were all observational and the way he makes the simplest, most in your face things funny was incredible. He had this dryness that was able to captivate every person in that theater and made them laugh. His performance probably got the most laughs.
Finally, legendary director and comedian, Judd Apatow took the stage. Judd talked a lot about his life and what his home life is like with his two daughters. What was funny was that to a lot of other people, Judd is a big deal, but to his daughter, he isn’t funny. It was a great set considering the clout behind this person and how he focused a lot of his material telling the audience that at home, he isn’t really regarded for his fame. The event was a great night full of comedy and laughter. Some of the proceeds from this show went to The Ronald McDonald House which was even better.
The season premiere of Crashing comes on tonight, January 20th, at 10 pm EST.
