In his introductory remarks Casey Bloys from HBO said, “On behalf of Richard Plepler, myself, and all of our friends and colleagues at HBO, I want to welcome you to the first season premiere of Divorce … I just have a few thank you’s. First, let me start by saying I have the distinct honor and pleasure of welcoming back an actress and producer who single-handedly built the HBO brand with her iconic portrayal of Carrie Bradshaw, Sarah Jessica Parker. In a long list of thank you’s, let me start with Sarah Jessica and her producing partner Alison Benson, who had the good taste and smarts to know when to come back and what material to come back with, so thank you for that. I want to thank Sharon Horgan, who created these characters and this world and does what you want to do in a comedy, which is balance emotional honesty with really funny characters. It is incredibly hard to do, and she makes it look easy. Thank you, Sharon. I want to thank Paul Simms who’s worked with us at HBO going back to Larry Sanders, Flight of the Conchords, and GIRLS, for his expertise and creative vision in show running this endeavor, thank you to Paul and all his writers. I would like to thank Jesse Peretz. He directed both episodes you’re going to see tonight… I also want to thank members of the cast who were able to join us tonight. Thomas Haden Church, Talia Balsam, Molly Shannon, thank you guys. And the kids.”
The new series follows Frances (SJP), a woman who suddenly begins to reassess her life and her marriage, and finds that making a clean break and a fresh start is harder than she thought. Thomas Haden Church stars as Robert, Frances’ husband, who is struggling to cope with their marriage falling apart.
