The 2022 Gotham Awards ceremony was held on November 28 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
The Gotham Awards paid tribute to the late acting icon Sidney Poitier at the ceremony on November 28. Actor Jonathan Majors presented the award to the Poitier family who was in attendance at the event. Poitier’s three daughters, Anika, Pamela, and Sherri took to the stage to accept the award following Majors’ incredible presentation.
“Our father had a deep and passionate love for independent cinema,” the daughters said. “His trailblazing impact opened up so many doors and will continue to open doors.”
Majors’ potent speech illustrated how Poitier inspired him as a creative, and also included a very special announcement.
“You activated the rebel in me and took my artistry to another level,” Majors said of Poitier. “It was my initiation into the artistic vanguard. From which you sir would be the chairman of the board.”
Majors continued, announcing that “we’re launching The Gotham Sidney Poitier Initiative. SPI aims to expand on his legacy to a new generation of filmmakers. The program encompasses mentorships, project funding, and career advancement.”
