G-Shock Celebrates Robert Geller Collaboration

Walking into the Robert Geller x G-Shock event, one couldn’t help but avert their eyes to the colorful visuals being projected onto the venue’s wall and the Deep House/EDM music being played in the background. The Robert Geller x G-Shock watch named the GST200RBG-1 is a part of G-Shock’s “G-Steel” collection, and properly so, as it integrates steel links, gold accents, 31 time zones, and a 200M water resistant feature. This watch is truly different from the traditional colorways and plastic/rubber build that the public has grown to appreciate from the brand.

We did a short interview with Robert and here’s what he had to say:

So how did the collaboration come about between you [Robert] and G-Shock?

Robert: We started working together, I think it was about 3 and a half years ago, and we met and kind of wanted to see where our brands aligned. Because I do all of my production in Japan and I’m there quite often, it just made a lot of sense, and then we started working on runway integration…

Oh, runway integration?

Robert: Yeah, showing G-Shock watches on the runway and just working together in ways leading up to this big launch. It takes a long time to make a watch.

The design is so intricate, what really inspired such an intricate design in the watch.

Robert: The watch is based on the watch that G-Shock launched last year, the G-Steel, and this is the first collaboration that they’ve done on the G-Steel, so I got to take the watch and make the Robert Geller version of it.

And because the name is “Midnight In Tokyo” (as named on the box the watch comes in) is that because you guys (Robert along with Tadashi Shibuya and David Johnson from Casio) are there so often?

Robert: I think that’s the cross section of our two brands, is Tokyo, and we started thinking what can this be, I wanted to talk about cities and textures and some of the most magical moments I’ve had in Tokyo was walking just through the streets at night, and the smells and the lights and the sounds. It’s just beautiful, its really like a big, very special atmosphere.

Thank you so much! I appreciate it!

Robert Geller has already made his mark in the fashion industry as a menswear designer whose focus is based on athletic wear. He began his career at Marc Jacobs in 2001 after graduating from RISD and has been making his way through the industry ever since. He is well decorated with awards from CFDA, Vogue, and other illustrious enterprises and continues to partner with other brands to make amazing products. The GST200RBG-1 will be available for purchase starting in July in the G-Shock’s website, Soho store, select Macy’s and select jewlers for $420.
