Film Review: ‘Rampage’

Watch Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson star in his latest blockbuster hit “Rampage.”

Inspired by the video game of the same name, Rampage, directed by Brad Peyton, stars Dwayne Johnson and Naomie Harris as primatologist and geneticist who join forces to save the city of Chicago from three pathogen-infected creatures. The movie will give viewers a sense of nostalgia while simultaneously addressing modern day science fiction topics like genetic modification. In present-day Chicago, a genetic mutation company, Energene builds a genetically modifying weapon, a pathogen that enlarges and angers whatever it contaminates. The three pathogen-infected creatures are an ape, crocodile, and wolf. Johnson’s character, Davis Okoye, rescues the ape at a young age, as part of his anti-poaching unit and forms a bond with the creature throughout the film. While George, the ape, becomes infected with the pathogen, George must battle with himself and his and Davis’ camaraderie is what carries the film.

This film utilizes classic Godzilla and king-kong-esque tropes like crumbling buildings, battles on skyscraper rooftops, destruction and chaos and will have you on the edge of your seat up until the very end of the movie, which – spoiler alert, will definitely shock you, if not fake you out. The classic rugged hero is tasked with saving the day with the help of his trusted side-kick George and leading lady Dr. Kate Caldwell. This exciting CGI creation is sure to be a summer hit. Catch Rampage in theatres now.
