Fashawn is one of the most versatile emcees on the west coast.
His grind remains consistently impressive, from his last solo project The Ecology to the numerous tracks he’s done with west coast legends MURS and Evidence, Fashawn refuses to fall off. Much like Aloe Blacc, he’s one of those artists that manages to effortlessly bridge one of Hip Hop’s most dreaded gaps, working with underground and mainstream artists. That type of exposure has molded Fashawn’s rhyming style to a point where it’s become unique.
The track “Confess” off of The Ecology is a perfect example of that uniqueness. Sporting a drum line that could easily be found on a club track, but it’s layered with a flute that transforms the soundscape.
The video adds an imaginative perspective to the track. I can’t be sure if the flute was intended to have that wild west feel, but it does, and makes the visuals all the more enjoyable. The simple animation coupled with all the emcee cameos, give the video an overall fun aesthetic. It’s definitely worth the watch, and I hope Fashawn continues supporting this kind of creativity in his visual accompaniments. You can purchase The Ecology from iTunes.
