Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky are brilliant, funny, and kind. They’re also the creators of HBO’s new dark comedy, Hacks.
Hacks is about two struggling comedians that initially professionally reject each other but slowly find solace in the other’s company. Does that solace amount to success? We’ll have to stay tuned to find out! The creators of the show have paired Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder together as the comedic mentor and mentee. The two have fantastic chemistry together both on and off the screen. In the show, Hannah’s character Ava is navigating their current (strained) relationship by getting to know her new boss’s history through old VHS tapes and newspaper clippings.
The Knockturnal‘s Kinsey Schofield asked Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky how they managed to create such authentic-looking footage of a young Jean Smart aka Deborah Vance. The answer might surprise and frighten you! If you think the #throwback footage is good… wait until you meet Deborah’s wax figure! Oh, wait. Nevermind. Watch the video above to discover the secret behind Deborah Vance’s famous wax figure. See, what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas!
We also ask Paul, Lucia, and Jen what their last vintage or thrift find was – inspired by Deborah Vance… Las Vegas’ most notorious haggle Queen.
HBO’s original series Hacks premieres on May 13, 2021, with two episodes! You’re in for a treat!
