The new drama series from HBO had its first episode debut on Sunday, June 4.
The Idol stars Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn, a pop star desperate to reclaim her status and stardom after a series of events crescendoing in a nervous breakdown derailed her last tour. With the assistance of Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s character, Tedros, Jocelyn embarks on a romantic and creative awakening that will either elevate her and her career or take her to the darkest places her soul has ever been.
Co-created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson along with Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, The Idol was produced in partnership with A24. The show’s debut season is comprised of five episodes that will roll out weekly, with the finale airing on July 2. All episodes will be available to view on both HBO and Max.
In an examination of how far artists are willing to go and what they are willing to sacrifice for the sake of their art, The Idol explores an extreme version of working in the music industry through the eyes of Jocelyn and what she is willing to do in order to achieve her dreams.
Featuring an all-star cast led by Depp and Tesfaye, The Idol includes the talents of countless individuals including Hank Azaria, Dan Levy, Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Jane Adams, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and many others.
“It was riveting,” Randolph said of working with the cast. “It was so cool too because some people came into it as musicians.”
