Batman’s butler has a past that will make your Mum blush! Pennyworth on Epix is a blast. With villains who can’t decide what side they’re on, dirty words, and a costume closet that Cam Newton can’t compete with.
Temporarily shut down and forced to reevaluate Season 2 due to COVID-19, Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon made sacrifices that they don’t regret. The producers admit to scaling back crowd sizes but say the shift in circumstances allowed them character development opportunities and intimacy between characters that we might not have seen otherwise. Now the new season is set to premiere on December 13th and fans are in for a pow-bang-slap…treat.
The creation of Heller and Cannon, Pennyworth explores the seedy world of a Gotham-esque London and the story behind Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon.) You know him as Batman’s favorite butler but this butler looks more like James Dean and knows how to shoot a pistol. By Season 2 Pennyworth has seen a lot of heartache and quite frankly, he’s over it. He’s doing everything he can to sock away cash to flee to sunny California. (We would be glad to have him!) Of course, word gets out that Pennyworth is rolling in the dough which attracts more problems and more heartache. Will Pennyworth emotionally shut down? I don’t think it’s possible. But a weaker character would.
Side note: Pennyworth’s fling with a certain Queen is a super fun storyline. The Knockturnal‘s Kinsey Schofield asked Bannon why HRH can’t get a call back to which he replied, “She gives me enough jib, I don’t need it from you!” This lead to the obvious question, “Is Alfred Prince Charles’ real father?” Plot twist! Bannon says he’s going to chat to Emma Corrin about a crossover. (Corrin of The Crown was seen on Season 1 of Pennyworth.)
Emma Paetz and Ben Aldridge return to the show – their chemistry as hot as ever. They both seem excited about their character development and storylines in Season 2. But not as excited as Aldridge was to show us a prop that he took from set. Thankfully it was sitting right at his feet and he lifted it up to the screen victoriously. Spoiler alert: His mustache is as magnificent as ever.
