The Knockturnal exclusively spoke to executive producers Roy Lee and Steven Schneider of the upcoming horror film Undertone during the 2026 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
Undertone is the latest horror film distributed by A24, set to release nationwide on March 13, 2026. The film centers on a host of a popular podcast, Evy (Nina Kiri), whose life is forever changed upon listening to a series of mysterious recordings sent to her by co-host Justin (Adam DiMarco). A skeptic, who’s overwhelmed by personal challenges in her life, caring for her ailing mother, seeking solace from these struggles closing in on her. These increasingly terrifying recordings question her sanity and unravel the structure of her responsibilities; each cryptic message sends her into a spiral.
The experimental nature of Undertone is something rarely seen in horror until recently. And who better to bring the auditory terror than the revered producing duo of Mr. Lee and Mr. Schneider, who are behind many modern horror classic films and franchises both collectively and individually, such as The Ring, The Grudge, Paranormal Activity, Insidious, It franchise, and last year’s critically acclaimed films The Long Walk and Weapons.
In this interview, Mr. Lee and Mr. Schneider reflect on the beginning of their producing partnership, leading to the formation of their company Spooky Pictures, their calling to horror, and how they came to find Undertone.
