The Universal Music Japan recording artist Che’nelle has influenced Asian culture and has set her sights on the states.
While she may appear new to the average American, Che’nelle is a two-time platinum recording artist who has worked with other multi-platinum artists such as Pitbull and David Guetta. She held the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and iTunes charts earlier this year when her song “Happiness” released in Japan. She recently opened for Lil Jon, David Guetta, and Alesso on June 13 at Ultra Music Festival Korea.
Most of her songs are very upbeat with infectious rhythms. She uses personal experiences as the crux of many songs. Asian culture has also played a large part. She draws from different Asian influences, from China and Japan to India and Malaysia to make her songs and her sound. Among the artists that inspire her is Bruno Mars, because of his tenacity and consistency, characteristics she admires.
Influenced by a mix of fashion catwalks and fearless expression, and topped off with some good vibes, “Fierce” looks to have the same impact here in the U.S. Che’nelle has said that she was inspired to write about self confidence and self worth, and connecting that to the world of fashion and the lingo that goes with it. Packed with bass, catchy melodies, and refreshing lyrics, “Fierce” looks to take the U.S by storm.
Depending on how its used it can mean a few different things however my message of the word ‘fierce’ is about ‘self confidence’ and ‘fearlessness’ and really ‘acceptance of oneself’! I wrote it over just a simple beat before it was fully produced. I pictured lights, cameras, colors different kinds of humans, people in all shapes and sizes, different sexualities, my gays for example and people with different ethnicities walking down a runway!
Fierce has a very up tempo sound will the rest of your project reflect that?
I have a diverse mixture of songs. However, yes you can expect an upbeat sound from the project.
Is there a music video planned for “Fierce” if so what can we expect to see?
Done and done! We shot it in Miami and will be releasing it real soon. Stay tuned! My favorite music video thus far.
How has the Asian culture affected your music?
Asian culture is usually conservative in my opinion, but beautiful in so many ways.. depending on what part of Asia, Malaysian culture, Japanese culture, Chinese culture or Indian culture for example are all different. I’ve been influenced by all! My J-pop songs are influenced by my exposure to the Asian culture. Overall, my music is versatile from my experiences all over the world.
You have already worked with some amazing talent. Who else would you like to work with?
Bruno mars, Gwen Stefani, Steve Aoki, David Guetta and Kes!
You did an amazing job at the Ultra Music Festival Korea! What about performing do you love?
Thank you! I love the adrenalin, I love seeing people happy and excited and when they sing along to my song it’s the best feeling in the world.
If you weren’t singer what would you be doing?
Wow.. well.. definitely something in the arts. Maybe acting, or authoring literature? What’s interesting is, the options I gave myself to possibly study after High School if music didn’t work out for me was psychology, mass communication or journalism.
Who are some artists that inspire you?
Bruno Mars because I’ve seen him organically blossom into the artist that he is now … I saw him not give up and I saw the support around him and the consistency of his work. Very self motivated and sure that what he created was amazing. Thats the Bruno I met and was very inspired by him.
Where do you get your creative inspiration?
I get it from stories from people, from my own experiences, from movies, from really anything that motivates or sparks my attention.
In five years Che’nelle will be?
A house hold name around the globe!
