Cash Cash’s Sam Frisch and JP Makhlouf headlined Big Beat’s Annual BBQ at Fishbowl last week.
The group has had a busy summer. Earlier this month they released their new single “All My Love” featuring Conor Maynard. They are also on tour and have two residencies. You can see them perform at Las Vegas’ iconic MGM Grand nightclub HAKKASAN and Atlantic City’s Premier. Also, their mega hit “Take Me Home” featuring Bebe Rexha recently achieved RIAA platinum certification. We caught up with them for a quick interview before their vibrant set. Check it out below:
How excited are you guys to be spinning at the Atlantic Records / Big Beat party today?
JP: We are very excited. This is our second year doing it. We get to see our friends and it’s always good to hang out with the label because we’re always on the road and sometimes you lose touch with everybody.
Sam: It’s cool to party with the people that you’re working with and you can bring all your friends out.
And you guys are promoting your new song with Conor Maynard. Tell us a little bit about it.
JP: “All My Love” featuring Conor Maynard. He murdered it. He took the track to the next level. A lot of emotion out of his voice and the hook just gets you right, you know?
Sam: It was cool. It was a fun record. It’s different a little bit. A different sound for us. So we’re trying some new stuff and the reaction has been amazing and we’ve been playing it out and people have been loving it. It’s so much fun. After living with it in the studio for like six months, being able to play it out now, it’s awesome.
Wow, six months?
JP: Yeah. Sometimes songs take a long time. They really do.
And how did Conor first get on your radar?
JP: We actually did a remix for him back in like 2011 for his song “Vegas Girl.” And it’s funny because then we actually met him for the first time in Vegas maybe two weeks ago. We invited him out and then just kinda hit it off. It was cool.
Sam: We’ve been seeing what he’s been doing lately and he’s really killing it. He’s doing some amazing stuff on Youtube and his voice is just phenomenal. So being able to get in touch with him … We sent him the record, we talked to him about it, and he killed it. It’s awesome.
Tell me a little bit about the lyric video and the vibe you were going for?
Sam: It’s just like another visual representation of the emotion behind the record. It’s cool because the visuals itself are kind of abstract and then you get the lyrics so you really understand what’s going on and the emotion behind it. And we worked with a really cool director and video producer down in Columbia. He did a great job.
JP: He gets great visuals and he really gets what we’re trying to do.
Is a full music video coming soon?
JP: Maybe. We’ll see. We’re gonna feel it out.
And recently “Take Me Home” went platinum? Can you reflect on the success of that?
JP: Yeah, it’s crazy to see because when we saw it go gold, that was already crazy for us. And then it was going platinum in some other countries. And then all of a sudden we got the call and they said recently it went platinum in the United States and that was amazing to hear.
It also catapulted Bebe as well. It was a moment for both of you.
JP: It was a good time for the both of us. We were kind of still upcoming trying to find ourselves. She was trying to find herself as an artist, and then that song … it kick started both of our careers.
Absolutely. And you guys are doing a lot of touring this summer and you have a Hakkasan residency. What can fans expect from your Hakkasan set?
JP: Vegas shows are the best. They are honestly … Like you get something special. When you come to Vegas, you get all three of us. A lot of times Sam and I just tour. But in Vegas you get all three of us and we really make the night a memorable night. We bring out instruments and stuff because we have a residency there so it’s cool. We can leave some instruments there. We do special things with the crowd and … it’s just a really turned up party.
Sam: Yeah, it’s cool. The whole team at Hakkasan really customizes their whole night club to a big Cash Cash theme throughout the night so it’s definitely something you won’t get anywhere else. It’s really different. Totally unique. And it’s fun for us because we’re always changing it up and it’s an awesome time.
JP: And you never know who’s gonna pop out at a party because the cool thing about Vegas, it’s a tourist city. So we had Charli XCX come to one of our shows and she jumped up there and sang a couple songs and Conor came out.
Sam: We did a couple songs with him.
JP: The Plain White T’s came out to a show. You never know who’s gonna come.
Cash Cash is known for very interesting collaborations. I’m sure you guys are working on the next album right now. How’s it going? What can you tell fans about it?
JP: Yeah. We’re just looking for features that want to make unique stuff. We’re trying to link up with artists that have distinct voices that want to try something new.
Anyone you want to shout out? Fill in the blank. Cash Cash wants to work with …
JP: Oh, geez. I don’t even know. Everyone always asks that question. It’s funny because every year we work with so many amazing artists that it’s like “How can we beat that?” You know? And then we somehow beat it every year.
Sam: I don’t even know.
JP: Christina Aguilera would be cool. We sent her a couple tracks.
Sam: She’s got a phenomenal voice. She would be awesome to work with.
JP: That would be cool. So we’ll see what happens.
Anything else you want to add?
JP: Keep up with us online. Instagram, Twitter’s the best way to see what we’re doing. Our handle is @cashcash and you can also find us on Facebook. But right now the best way is just come out to Vegas too. Make a trip. Plan something special with your friends and we guarantee it’ll be worth it.
Sam: We got our new song with Conor Maynard. “All My Love” is out right now. So go check it out. Spotify, iTunes, everywhere. We’ll be touring around the world this year so come see us.
