Bethann Hardison and Frédéric Tcheng co-directed the film Invisible Beauty, which will be released in theaters on September 15th.
This film shines a spotlight on Hardison and her impact on the fashion industry. Her efforts helped advance change by speaking against the lack of diversity within these spaces and forcing brands to hold a mirror in front of themselves. Invisible Beauty demonstrates the integral moments that have caused Hardison to be recognized as one of the fashion industry’s most influential icons. This film uses a variety of personal photos, archival images, clips, and interviews that have been combined with sounds from Hardison as she relives each memory and offers additional insight. Viewers will also hear intimate interviews from stars such as Iman, Tyson Beckford, Tracee Ellis Ross, Zendaya, Fran Lebowitz, Pat Cleveland, Naomi Campbell, and Stephen Burrows. Each of their testimonies helps further the concept of the film, alluding to Hardison’s impact and motivation for progress.
The Knockturnal spoke to Hardison about the film and her experience co-directing it with Tcheng. She also spoke about what changes she feels still need to be made within the fashion industry and offered advice to those looking to get into the business.
