Accompanied by notes emanating underneath fingerless gloves and illuminated by the orange tint of a golden hour Arkansas sun, violinist and songwriter Kaoru Ishibashi, who performs as Kishi Bashi, provides a soundtrack to the now desolate Jerome War Relocation Center. It is a place whose history that seems to match the cold: one of ten sites used for the forced relocation of Japanese Americans shortly after Pearl Harbor. A smokestack stands as a visual reminder. On the eve of Oscar Sunday, the The Academy celebrated a few talented artists whose work behind the scenes created some of the most iconic looks on the big screen.
The annual Makeup & Hairstyling symposium was held at on Saturday March 26 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills and included this years nominees: Mike Marino, Stacey Morris and Carla Farmer for Coming 2 America, Nadia Stacey, Naomi Donne and Julia Vernon for Cruella, Donald Mowat, Love Larson and Eva von Bahr for Dune, Linda Dowds, Stephanie Ingram and Justin Raleigh for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and Göran Lundström, Anna Carin Lock and Frederic Aspiras for House of Gucci.
During the event, guests were shown a seven minute reel highlighting each artists work in their respective film. It was the same reel submitted for nominee consideration. After each reel was screened, the artists then took the stage for a Q&A giving the audience an inside look into their creative process.
Because of COVID-19 the event was downsized. In previous years a reception was held post symposium where guests could get an up close view of wigs, make up, prosthetics, and more that were part of each film.
While we missed that part of the program, we’re grateful the event happened at all so Hollywood could toast their great work.
Spoiler alter, The Eyes of Tammy Faye ultimately won the Oscar. See pictures below for the faces behind the iconic looks!
