A tasty rum straight from the Philippines
Last Sunday, Don Papa Rum hosted an event to celebrate their rum at The Surf Lodge in Montauk. The Surf Lodge is known for attracting a young and cool crowd during the summer in Montauk and there would have been no better place to celebrate this rum than here. As soon as guests walked into the venue, we were given a shot of Don Papa Rum to sample. The rum itself has the natural sweetness that rum typically has, but with a little smokiness in it which adds a fun little twists on traditional rums. Guests had the chance to hang out indoors or outdoors. The cool thing about the outdoor space at The Surf Lodge is that the entire outdoor space is covered in sand and really resembles a beach cabana feel. Guests had the chance to also sample some of the specialty Don Papa cocktails. We had two favorite drinks and they were called the “Ruby Red” and the “Sunshower.” The Sunshower is made with Don Papa Rum, pineapple, orange, lemon, and almond. This drink was so refreshing and was a blast of citrus flavor in your mouth. And the sweetness of the rum added that extra kick of flavor to the drink where we just couldn’t stop having it. The Ruby Red is made with Don Papa Rum, grapefruit, pomegranate, and Fentiman’s tonic. This drink isn’t as sweet as the Sunshower but has a mellower sweetness to it which we loved. The tartness from the grapefruit and the subtle sweetness from the pomegranate were great balancing points to the sweetness from the rum. Also, another activity that was provided to guests was the chance to make their own mask. Don Papa Rum is a rum made in the Philippines and one part of their culture there is a ceremony where people wear masks. With that, guests had their choice of different animal masks that are native to the Philippines such as the caribou or an eagle. An assortment of different accessories were given so guests could hot glue everything onto their mask. It was definitely a fun activity to do and with the amount of rum we had, we didn’t even feel some of the hot glue burns we got. It was definitely a fun experience. As the night winded down, The Surf Lodge hosted a performance by Lupe Fiasco where he performed some of his earlier hits along with some of his newer songs.
All in all, this event was a blast and a fun trip away from New York City. Don Papa Rum is definitely a rum you should go out and try. Made in the Philippines, this rum boasts a sweetness unlike any other rum and goes well with all sorts of mixers to make a delicious cocktail.
