“I know you all have been waiting for new music. But it takes time because I have to live it first…it has to be authentic. Girl Disrupted, disrupted me, and that’s why I’m comfortable in my chocolate skin.”
In between breath taking vocal riffs and runs, Sevyn Streeter shared this heartfelt moment with an intimate BB King Blues Club & Grill crowd.
There is no denying the multi-talented vocalist that Sevyn Streeter is, but she proved herself to be a triple threat at her intimate January 29th performance: hitting choreographed moves, and the same kinds of low register and high notes as some of the greats. Sevyn performed new singles off of her upcoming album Girl Disrupted, along with a few oldies but goodies. The night opened with acts such as songwriter turned R&B singer , Alonzo Bereal, and Blush, a vibrant and trendy female R&B group managed by Destiny’s Child former manager and Beyonce’s father Mathew Knowles. Both groups were able to bring a fresh raw energy to the audience, with their fast pace trap beats and rhythmic dance moves.
Once both groups wrapped up Sevyn entered the stage boxing ring style: slow and striding, the beat dropped and upon recognizing the instrumental of Sevyn’s hit single “Prolly” featuring Gucci Mane, the audience broke out into dance with the floor shaking underneath them. The crowd turned down.
Sevyn surprised the audience with music from her new album, Girl Disrupted that took audience members on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Slow, and dreamy songs like “All of my love” brought on a 90’s nostalgic dream like trance over the audience, while the euphoric chants in “D4L’s” chorus brought on a rhythmic swaying, and let’s not forget the slow lean and swagger audience members broke out into during her performance of “Fallen.” The night ended with audience members feeling cocky and confident, pointing their fingers and lip synching along to a story about upgrading from an ex with her hit single “Next.“
It is a rare thing in 2017 to find artists who are able to take music lovers back to an era of music they loved, or a memory, time or place they felt something magical, in such a short amount of time. Her ability to not only sing every note with effortless passion but to make the audience feel that same passion is what makes Sevyn a rare gem in 2017.
