Filmmaker Spike Lee’s bold Chi-Raq will be available on Digital HD and On Demand on Dec. 29.
The satirical film has garnered critical acclaim including four NAACP image award nominations. Starring Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Teyonah Parris, Jennifer Hudson, Steve Harris, Harry Lennix, D.B. Sweeney, Angela Bassett, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson the film tackles gun violence in America inspired by the ancient Greek play “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes. A battle of the sexes ensues as the Chicago’s South Side deals with the death of a child due to a stray bullet shot by a gang member.
In an attempt to curve the violent brawl between two local gangs, Lysistrata (Parris) persuades the woman of of the gangs, Spartans and Trojans, to swear off sex. Lee’s film tackles violence, race sex, corrupt politicians and urban decay within the narrative with original music by Cannon.
Chi-Raq is the first movie produced by Amazon Studios known for their Golden Globe and Emmy winning series Transparent. The bundle includes “The Making of Ch-Raq,” deleted scenes, extended scenes and a music video for “We Gotta Do Better” by Kevon Carter. DVD, Blu-Ray and standard digital copies with be available on Jan. 26.
