On April 12th 2017, Charli XCX brought her Number 1 Angel Tour to New York City’s Le Poisson Rouge in support of her newest mix tape, “Number 1 Angel.”
With opening acts Brooke Candy and Cupcakke to get things started, it was a night of non-stop dancing. Best known for her bubblegum pop hits such as “Boom Clap” and “Fancy.” Charli XCX has been on a mission to push her sound and defy genres with EP “Vroom Vroom” and her latest release. Taking influences from underground electro pop and collaborating with producers such as SOPHIE, EASY FX, and Danny L Harle, her 15-song set delivered ear worm after ear worm.
Coming on at 10 p.m., the crowd screamed at the sight of their idol. Wearing a latex crop top and high waist shorts, paired with neon green Nike sports shoes, Charli XCX allowed the music to do most of the talking as she danced excitedly on almost every track.
Her catchy lyrics and hooks were evident right from the beginning. Even as a casual listener, it’s hard not have the chorus stuck in your head after a few listens. Having fast paced songs following one after another, Charli XCX catered to her fans that wanted to dance the night away. She utilizes flashing LED lights and smoke machines as she works every corner of the stage. Tantalizingly dancing she poses the question “Do you want to roll with me?” on the beginning track “Roll with Me.” Singing about hookups and falling in and out of love on tracks such as “3AM (Pull up),” “Trophy” and “Baby Girl,” Charli XCX infuses authenticity in her club bangers. Obvious favorites from the audience were “Vroom Vroom” and “Lip gloss” as the volume from the crowd rises to a fever pitch.
Quiet moments were rare during the night but it was equally appreciated. On tracks such as “Emotional and “White Roses,” Charli XCX pours her heart out with lyrics “all I need is you and me alone … Come on pull me close, lay me in the snow.” Her chemistry with her DJ was evident throughout the night as they often danced with each other and during the song “Bounce,” he laid flat on stage as she danced around him and even briefly joined him on the ground. It was clear that her loyal fans fully packed the venue as they shouted every word back to her and she loved them back equally; frequently reaching out to her fans and on the last song, “Girl’s Night Out,” invited them onstage to dance with her.
