Featuring a panel with legendary filmmaker, Baz Luhrmann
Last week, Bombay Sapphire hosted an art exhibit event, titled Saw This, Made This, in collaboration with renowned film director, Baz Luhrmann. The event was hosted at the Chelsea Factory and showcased the world’s first ultra realistic robot artist, Ai-Da. This art installation celebrated thousands of works of art that were submitted via Baz Luhrmann’s creative call out last year on social media titled #SawThisMadeThis. This call out invited people to see the world as a center of artistic inspiration and share what they were seeing on social media using the hashtag. And throughout the night, Ai-Da was seen to paint a brand new art piece that used all the submissions as inspiration.
The night started out with guests mingling and drinking craft gin cocktails courtesy of Bombay Sapphire gin. One of our favorite cocktails of the night included the Iona Martini made with Bombay Sapphire Premier Cru Murcian Lemon, Noilly Prat Extra Dry Vermouth, and a pinch of Edible Blue Glitter.
The other drink that we went back for was the Sunrise and Tonic cocktail made with Bombay Sapphire, Grapefruit Juice, Martini and Rossi Fiero, and Fever tree Tonic. The initial cocktail hour hosted a number of tastemakers, celebrities, and innovators including Baz Luhrmann, Sophie Collé, Nneka Julia, Roze Traore, and Fabritzio Villalpando.
After guests settled in, a panel discussion was held between Baz and Ai-Da with Tim Marlow, CEO of the Design Museum, as the moderator. In fact, it was Ai-Da ‘herself’ that introduced Baz to the stage which shocked and intrigued guests. And throughout the panel discussion, Baz and Tim prompted Ai-Da for responses on topics like the artistic creative process, how AI should be looked at and used in today’s society, and even what Baz Luhrmann film is Ai-Da’s favorite (Romeo and Juliet). Continuing the conversation, Baz goes into depth about his creative process and what inspires him as well as discussing the future of artistic expression and creativity. It was at this topic that Baz prompted Ai-Da with the question on whether AI can have emotion. Ai-Da responds with several poems that showcase the understanding for emotion, but also towards the end responds that AI is unable to comprehend emotion as a whole.
Once the panel discussion ended, guests were able to mingle with each other and take in some of the other art pieces displayed in this installation. This event was a glimpse of where AI can take us in the future and how we can leverage AI to benefit humankind physically, mentally, and culturally.
