Beyond The Void: Art Meets Virtual Reality

Many say magic does not exist, but I like to think they’re wrong. With the technological advances, we have been able to create unthinkable things, magical things; virtual reality is definitely one of them.  The best of technology has met the beauty of art and you can experience it first hand at Jump Into The Light located in Bowery St., New York.

The fact that we are able to trick the brain just by putting something in our of your eyes is fascinating. Jump Into The Light plays with this concept by presenting to its visitors a lab and cinema where people can discover and play with virtual reality. The virtual reality experience, regardless of whether you use it to play, watch movies, design, etc, is one that provides a lot of excitement. People are always in disbelief of how a gadget can trick the brain so easily. It allows one to feel the joy felt when playing as a kid. Jump into the light welcomes virtual reality seekers and lovers to experience virtual reality in different forms. What’s lovely about Jump Into The Light and the founder company Deathless VR is that they are always evolving, bringing new material for the lab and creating new experiences for users. Aside from providing computers, games, movies, and a pretty cool option to print yourself in 3D,  they also coordinate events that involve VR in different forms.

This time, they have teamed up with the incredible artist Misha Tyutyunik to create a one of a kind experience for the public, “Beyond The Void” . Misha Tyutyunik is a well known painter for the many incredible murals he has done around the country, including The Big Apple. Jump into the light welcomed  Misha to use their equipment so he could translate his creative genius into virtual reality.

Using Tilt Brush by Google, Misha turned the inspiration he gets for his murals into a completely mind-blowing work of virtual art. The galaxy was Misha’s canvas and the possibilities for instruments to draw with were endless. Because it is all virtual, Misha had the possibility to draw with smoke, fire, rainbows, fog, stars, anything really you name it. Visitors were welcomed to use the same gadgets he used for his creations and dive into a world of pure magic.

We were now able to be completely surrounded by his thoughts and creations while being transported to another dimension. In the artist’s words “You are invited to slide down the cerebral cortex and splash into the abyss that is the mind of MDOT.” The moment I put on the goggles, my jaw dropped. I felt like I was suddenly Alice in Wonderland, discovering a world of imagination and genius creativity. I was suddenly surrounded by stars, in the middle of the galaxy. As I moved my head to look around, I saw Misha’s murals, one a little further from the other. As I took some steps forward, I got closer and closer to his paintings. Using the the remote handed to me, I was able to make them bigger, smaller, closer and further from me. My adventurous side kicked in and decided to walk through each creation, which was the best decision I could make. The first painting I saw was that of a beautiful sparkling flower, taller than me. It was blue and was shining like a star, similar to the flowers in Avatar. I knew I had to move on because of the people eager to see what I was seeing, patiently waiting for their turn, but I wanted to look at it forever. I walked away from this painting and moved on to the next which blew my mind even more. It was a skull made out of paint made to look like fire. I was perplexed looking at it. Like a mosquito flying towards the light, I walked towards this painting. I stared at it, and examined it as it stood right in front of my face. I took a step forward to walk through this fire skull and I suddenly felt my face getting warmer. This is when I really felt the power of virtual reality . Since my brain has learnt the reaction I get when I am close to fire, it softly imitated this reaction even if there was no real fire in front of me. The more I looked at these beautifully crafted pieces of art, the more I fell in love with them and the experience.

The opening night for this incredible exhibition was a complete success. There were around 100 attendees, people mingled, Misha was around to talk to visitors about their thoughts and experiences, there was even a DJ playing! Jump Into The Light is so welcoming, great to bring a date, friends, family and assures a great time 100% guarantee.

If you want to get a taste of magic and witness this for yourself pay Jump Into The Light a visit, they will be displaying Misha’s art until the 1st of January.
