Exclusive: Jameela Jamil Talks Partnership With Always to Fight Period Poverty

by Serena Khahera May 20, 2022
written by Serena Khahera

The Knockturnal got the chance to speak with activist and actress Jameela Jamil who has recently partnered with P&G’s Always to help in the fight to end period poverty and support Congresswoman Grace Meng’s Menstrual Equity for All Act. This act would help systemically end period poverty in the U.S. Today, Jameela also delivered a keynote speech in Washington, D.C., to encourage policymakers to support the bill to drive systemic change. The fight to end period poverty is due to lack of access to period protection. Period poverty is a serious problem which affects people all around the world. One of the stigmas surrounding period poverty is that it only happens in unwealthy countries, but even in the most economically developed countries period poverty is an extremely serious issue. In fact, here in the U.S., nearly 1 in 5 girls have missed school because they didn’t have access to period products. Since the launch of Always’ #EndPeriodPoverty program in 2018, Always has donated over 160 million period products to people in need around the world, including more than 50 million in the U.S., in partnership with organizations like Feeding America®, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. “Millions of people across our nation suffer from a lack of access to period products and are forced to forego educational or employment opportunities because of it,” said Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY). “As we celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28th, I urge everyone, including legislators, to support my Menstrual Equity for All Act. It is the first whole-of-government approach to address this issue and would help end the problem of period poverty.” To further help raise awareness around the prevalence of period poverty across the country and motivate society at large to support the bill, Always partnered with Jameela Jamil, who spoke to us on the issue.

You are partnering with P&G’s Always to help end period poverty and support Congresswoman Grace Meng’s Menstrual Equity for All Act, so could you just talk to us a little bit about why this was so important for you?

It’s so important to me because it is so maddening, frustrating, and shocking that even in 2022 we are even having this conversation. In 2022, in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, we have 3.5 million girls a year not being able to go to school because they don’t have access to period protection. We have 1 in 5 girls in the United States, and we’re talking in the millions here. This isn’t just in unwealthy states this is an issue in major cities as well like Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta. I think the subject has just been ignored because when we hear the phrase “period poverty” we think of the countries that don’t have this much wealth, and yet the United States is managing to fail 50% of a population by not making sure everyone has access to the dignity and protection of period products. These statistics are ridiculous it makes me so upset.

Has this been a project that you have always been passionate about or has learning more about the term “period poverty” and partnering with P&G’s Always made you more passionate?

Oh no, it’s something I have always been passionate about. I remember just a few years ago the UK went through a similar motion and we had tremendous success over there. It just has never occurred to me that in the United States of America that this was going on. So when this was brought to my attention, and I was offered the chance to partner up with Always and their amazing work in this area to not only donate a million pads to Feeding America® and trying to help in the fight to end period poverty, but to also it was just an honor to be a part of this fight and spreading awareness. I really think a lot of people don’t know, and part of that is we still find periods quite awkward to talk about which is something that also has to end because it’s such a natural event that nobody should feel any shame about. I’ve always tried to use my platform to raise awareness about important issues, and this is very high up on my list because I can’t believe what young people are going through the indignity of being neglected to this degree that you are now having your education suffer. It is mortifying.

You are also delivering the keynote speech in Washington, D.C. today, to encourage policymakers to support the bill were you nervous at all for that?

I wasn’t nervous for it, I just felt very excited and very honored to be able to talk about this subject. I just feel very hopeful that we can be a part of waking people up and also reminding all the people reading this interview that we have the power to change the situation. I feel as though we have been deliberately deterred away from this conversation and we haven’t been made as aware of how severe these things are. Now we know we must use all of our power as the people as the masses to put pressure on all of our elected officials to make sure that they support this important act. We also need to look at who we are allowing to represent us in power. We really need to be as educated as possible and we are learning with everything we are seeing with the reproduction rights being rolled back that we can not be complacent because it is to our detriment to not use all of our voting power and all of our opportunity to engage and change the situation for half of the population.

You talked about how it starts with the people, so what can people at home do to better support this cause?

Call your elected officials. Truly that is the first place to start because they do listen if enough pressure is applied. We have seen this again and again, as soon as the people become politically motivated and they group together and join forces we have seen astonishing turn outs. This is something that could actually be quite simple to deal with we just have to apply the pressure. They benefit from our inaction and our silence. We can not let them get away with this gross negligence anymore because it is mortifying, offensive, and frankly inhumane.

How did this support and partnership with Congresswoman Grace Meng come about?

Well that was via Always. Always was already working with her and I was able to join in to utilize my platform to be able to further the awareness around this subject because so many people don’t know. Nobody ever hears the word poverty and thinks about the United States, and there is so much poverty in the United States. No one would ever presume that in the United States of America we have period poverty. People need to understand that no one is galvanized to act because we don’t even know that it’s happening.

With reproductive rights currently being challenged I think it is also the perfect time to be bringing in period poverty into the discussion  because it is very real and there is a stigma, so what do you think some of the steps those who do not have periods could take to also support and care about this act?

They should also be calling their elected officials otherwise people with periods are going to bleed all over their belongings, on their couches, or clothes because there are real consequences for everyone involved. We all win when we deal with this subject head on. It’s really important. It’s going to impact you in some way it’s going to impact someone you love, someone you know in some way so join the fight! We can not just keep looking at these subjects that are about basic human rights us “us” and “them” and “not my problem”. By now of all times we must learn that we must take on every fight together. We are deliberately divided because together we are so much stronger so we need to come together.

Exclusive: Tamil-American musician Bhi Bhiman talks upcoming album “I’ll Sleep When I’m Famous”

by Serena Khahera May 18, 2022
written by Serena Khahera

Recently The Knockturnal got the exclusive chance to speak to Tamil-American musician Bhi Bhiman. Bhi has been called, “One of America’s best kept secrets” by The Times UK, and “first rate and undeniably unique” by the Washington Post. His music has been praised by the Wall Street Journal, NPR, Billboard and the New York Times. Bhiman’s upcoming album I’ll Sleep When I’m Famous, releasing June 24, 2022, is his most personal release to date. Co-produced by Sam Kassirer (who worked on the critically acclaimed BHIMAN and Rhythm & Reason albums), the nine-song album sports a world-weary, but wide-eyed positivity.  Recorded entirely at his home studio, these songs were inspired by the pop sensibility of the rock music Bhi grew up on in the 90s, and is a call back to the more acoustic sound found on his debut. His new music comes off the heels of his recent political concept podcast album “Peace of Mind”, which was featured in the Wall Street Journal, Billboard and American Songwriter.  Bhi will also be releasing his song “Helpless” on Friday May 20th. Over the course of his career, the St. Louis native has collaborated with a diverse list of creatives including comedian/actor Keegan-Michael Key, author Dave Eggers, singer/songwriter Rhiannon Giddens, rapper/director Boots Riley, and late iconic singer Chris Cornell. “These songs deal with the ever-increasing presence of death in our lives,” Bhiman explains, connecting to both the Covid pandemic and personal loss. “I hope that it can be cathartic to those who’ve experienced loss, not as a downer but as a reality check. The reason we create art to begin with, is that we don’t see enough beauty in the world. And his record is meant to replace some of the beauty that’s been taken from us.”

Why don’t we start with you just telling me a little bit about how you started working in music.

It comes from a love of playing guitar which is my first instrument that I picked up when I was really little about 7 years old,  and I played very consistently through childhood. In terms of singing, I only stared doing when I was about 19. It’s always been about guitar for me which really sparked my love for music. A lot of different things influenced me, but it started from humble beginnings.

What would you say is your greatest inspiration behind your sound?

I definitely like to listen to all kinds of stuff, and I bring a lot of different genres and international music into something I know a lot better like rock and roll stuff or folk stuff, and try to combine them through my lens which I think is kind of unique.

I know your upcoming studio album I’ll Sleep When I’m Famous is coming out this summer, so could you just tell me a little bit about why now felt like the right time to release this?

Ir’s been about two years of seeds of ideas and stuff I had been working on when I finally sat down and was like “okay, I need to go through my hard drive and figure out what is what”. I had hundreds of unfinished ideas some that were worth exploring and some that were just not good. I came down to about 40 songs, down to 20 songs, down to about 15, and finally down to 10 where I am now. In terms of thematically, the pandemic definitely played a big role because the whole pandemic is based around the fear of death. Everyone suddenly had a lot of time to sit and think or read about it, so the album does deal with death, but in the way of “how do the living deal with losing another loved one?”. My family has dealt with a lot of death these past few years and each death is quite different depending on each relationship you have. Losing an elder is one thing, but we’ve lost some younger relatives, and there’s almost a double tragedy there.  One specifically was my nephew who we had just lost after graduating high school three years ago who was on his way to doing really great things and was so incredibly bright and that’s what I mean by that “double grief” because it’s such a shame to have someone not even be able to live their life before being able to do everything they are capable of. So, a lot of this album was kind of spurred by that moment that happened in 2018 before the pandemic. I got to know some of his classmates who were all about 17 and 18 around that time and I wrote a number of songs that were kind of written to them but also for him even though he would never hear them. Unfortunately I know there are a lot of people in that position, assumingly even more since the pandemic,  that are struggling with their own mental health problems so I wrote a couple of songs one of which is “Helpless”.

You talked a little bit about your writing process, so would you say that some songs were harder to write than others?

For sure. Not necessarily for any type of writers block or I couldn’t come up with ideas, but its more of a perfectionist kind of thing. With my songs it’s either right or wrong and I kind of. keep working on it until it’s just right.  In the case of my song “Up All Night”, I wrote that when a relative was dying and family was staying up through the night to take care of him, talking to him, having conversations and that was why I wrote that song which came very quickly like within one day I had written it all. Some of the other songs on the album took almost a year or more.

As a fellow Desi American, I’m really curious to know what it was like for you when you decided to pursue a career in music especially in an industry where we don’t usually see a lot of representation of ourselves.

Everyone usually goes straight to the parents, and I had pretty cool parents who were pretty encouraging of me playing music even when I had to pretty much beg them to get me a guitar. I was really into rock and electric guitar growing up so I’m sure that was pretty annoying for them, but they were always supportive and had no problem with me practicing as long as I had done my homework. Now I don’t think they thought I would take it as serious I did, in fact it became the most serious thing in my life.  Overall, my parents were supportive then and they’re supportive now and I think they would say that they are pretty proud even when they might be a little worried about the financial security of it. In terms of the industry, yes you are totally right there is not a lot of representation especially in America. In the music industry here, there is not a lot of front facing musicians that look like us. Behind the scenes there are definitely some writers, producers, and stuff like that but in terms of lead singers or prominent artists there is little to none. That said, it’s not something you can dwell too long on. I get funny looks all the time when I show up to a show and then I have to prove myself every night but in terms of struggles it is definitely a minor one, but it is real and a thing. I have hope that it is going to turn a corner soon though, and I’ve seen younger people already doing that but there’s still some barriers to be broken in that regard especially in this field of rock or instrument playing singers.

And my final question would be, if you could give one piece of advice to your younger self about pursuing a career in music what would you say?

I would say anything is possible the only limitation is what you tell yourself.

Check out the single and video for HELPLESS releasing May 20, 2022 and album I’ll Sleep When I’m Famous releasing June 24, 2022.

Celebrating over 80 years of service to songwriters, composers, music publishers and businesses, Broadcast Music, Inc.® (BMI®) is a global leader in music rights management, serving as an advocate for the value of music. BMI represents the public performance rights in over 18.7 million musical works created and owned by more than 1.2 million songwriters, composers, and music publishers. The Company negotiates music license agreements and distributes the fees it generates as royalties to its affiliated writers and publishers when their songs are performed in public. In 1939, BMI created a groundbreaking open-door policy becoming the only performing rights organization to welcome and represent the creators of blues, jazz, country, and American roots music. Today, the musical compositions in BMI’s repertoire, from chart toppers to perennial favorites, span all genres of music and are consistently among the most-performed hits of the year.
