On January 3rd, I got to experience my first movie of the new decade, Midnight Family, coupled with the short In The Absence at the Soho House in the Meatpacking District.

2019 closes out this decade with creative, innovative, challenging films that we have now come to expect. So many fascinating filmmakers made their bold debut, utilizing unique techniques, helping establish a definitive style to 2010’s filmmaking. While some films homage the classics, others carved their own distinct identities through challenging film conventions, promising storied careers as we all head into the 2020’s.
Telling a story based around strictly dialogue is challenging. Netflix’s “The Two Popes” is a strong, if unbalanced, look at the Catholic Church.
“The Two Popes” is the latest film from famed director, Fernando Meirelles, known for City of God, The Constant Gardener, and Blindness.
The Aeronauts is a biographical adventure film about a weather scientist and pilot who try to break the world record for highest flight in a hot air balloon and using the gathered data to advance the field of meteorology.
The Produced By NY 2019 conference was held at Florence Gould Hall on November 9th. The conference covered exciting topics such as the popularity of streaming and the accessibility to financing in our current market. The halls bustled as business cards were exchanged, and new connections were forged. Everyone from young up-and-coming filmmakers to seasoned professionals were excited to learn about the latest trends in producing and overall filmmaking.
On Wednesday, October 30th, I attended a screening of Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am at the gorgeous Roxy Cinema, hosted by Magnolia Pictures. It premiered this year at the Sundance Film Festival and was an Official Selection at the AFI Docs Festival and the San Francisco International Film Festival. The film is currently campaigning for “Best Documentary Feature” at the Oscars.
