Brian Fahlstrom, Rosha Yaghmai, Meryl Smith Open at Marlborough Contemporary

by Jinny Choi November 19, 2017
written by Jinny Choi

Three artists—Brian Fahlstrom, Meryl Smith, and Rosha Yaghmai—celebrated their opening reception at Marlborough Contemporary New York this past Tuesday evening.

Fahlstrom’s collection, “Truth in the Night,” portrays surreal landscapes ambiguously merged with depictions of human figures and architecture. The strange marriage of the subjects is reminiscent of Dante’s Divine Comedy, in its representation of fragments of reality, such as the human body and buildings, thrown into a dreamlike world. The swirling landscape and sky are envelopes the composition, threatening to swallow its subjects. Fahlstrom’s inclination for natural colors, sinuous strokes, and melting forms give a sort of hallucinatory/psychedelic effect, that is oddly serene.

Meryl Smith’s collection “Liminal Kingdom” is suggestive of Noah’s Arc; each canvas is dedicated to a pair or animals, ranging from herons to horses to alligators. Their elongated, twisting bodies emphasize the grace and athleticism of animals. The paintings’ subdued tones and symmetrical forms are evocative of the balance of Nature.

Rosha Yaghmai’s installation consists of wall-hanging works, Awnings; and freestanding sculptures, Optometers. Yaghmai often experiments with found materials, and Optometers are similarly constructed from found industrial conduit. These serpentine sculptures are decorated with eyeglass lenses and eyeshadow, reflecting her preoccupation with the medium and mechanisms of vision.

On view now till Dec 23rd.

Opera Gallery Presents Chae Sung Pil & Lee Gil Rae

by Jinny Choi November 18, 2017
written by Jinny Choi

Contemporary works of two Korean artists—painter Chae Sung Pil and sculptor Lee Gil Rae—are on view at the Opera Gallery now till Dec. 5th.

Chae’s collection entitled The History of Blue, and Lee’s Pine Trees coexist almost symbiotically at the three-floor Opera Gallery in the Upper East Side. The exhibition strikes as a product of an initial collaboration by the two artists—such an artistic harmony is largely founded on the fact that both collections are highly evocative of the natural world. Chae’s insistent use of soil and the color blue reminds us of the earth, sky and sea; while Lee’s copper sculptures of pine trees give us a refreshing sense of being surrounded by tiny trees. The artworks’ unanimous, organic/natural forms create a strong theme around Nature.

An artist’s choice of medium reveals much about the artist’s philosophy; Chae’s unrelenting use of soil as his sole medium certainly speaks to his own intentions. I had a chance to speak with Chae about his background and his artistic process at the opening reception Tuesday evening. When he speaks to you, he gives you the impression that he is disclosing information exclusively to you, as if you were his only audience. Chae became preoccupied with the idea of using soil as paint in his early 20s. His fixation grew from the philosophy that while the world around us constantly changes, the fundamental elements of this earth, such as soil, endure. We walk the same earth as our ancestors, and our future generations will continue to walk the same earth. It is the idea of “for dust you are and to dust you will return.” All of time and history is embedded in our soil—it is symbolic of continuity, universality, and permanency. This is the truth that drives Chae’s vision.

Lee’s pine tree sculptures are made exclusively of copper; he molds thousands of small copper rings to create a single sculpture that resembles something of our natural world. Each small, individual part is molded together to form a whole—mirroring cells that of any living organism. Despite its medium of copper, Lee’s sculptures appear tender, alive even, perhaps the combined effects of its hollowness, its organic structure, and its many visible components. Lee captures so well, the strange, sinuous forms of living trees.

Modernism on the Ganges: Raghubir Singh Photographs

by Jinny Choi October 14, 2017
written by Jinny Choi

“For a nation of millions to make any kind of sense, it must base itself firmly on the concept of multiplicity, of plurality, and tolerance, of devolution and decentralization wherever possible. There can be no one way—religious, cultural, or linguistic—of being an Indian; Let difference reign.”

-Salman Rushdie

Modernism on the Ganges: Raghubir Singh Photographs showcases the trajectory of photographer Raghubir Singh’s career. His works are presented in dialogue with artists who have inspired him, including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Satyajit Ray, and Helen Levitt.

Despite his momentous contributions to the art form, Singh’s influences often go unrecognized—he has not had a major exhibition since 1998, and this exhibit reflects the Met’s continuing efforts to include international artists and expose the global artistic process. The Met acquired their first photograph by Singh 25 years ago, when Singh himself was a frequent visitor to the museum. This exhibition is a sort of canonization for one of the most important photographers of the generation.

Born in 1942 in Jaipur, India; Singh began photographing his native land at the age of 14. He was a pioneer of color street photography, known for intermixing traditions of the East and the West. Although he spent most of his adult life travelling between Hong Kong, Paris, London, and New York, he had a devout, visual passion for his native land India. His Western academic and artistic influence allowed him to capture India both as an insider and an outsider. He could immerse himself seamlessly into the Indian culture while being able to interpret it with an outsider’s perspective.

Unlike Bresson, whom he greatly admired, Singh insisted that he capture India in color photography. Color had always been a foundation of Indian art, and to betray the country’s abounding colors with black and white photography was to betray a large aspect of Indian culture. His photographs achieve a beautiful balance of colors: as saturated tones are often directly contrasted with muted ones. He wrote in 1998, “The fundamental condition of India, however, is the cycle of rebirth, in which colour is not just an essential element but also a deep inner source, reaching into the subcontinent’s long and rich past.”

His artistic process was often a waiting game, anticipating the world to congeal into harmony—a fleeting moment in which he could capture reality’s beauty and chaos into four corners. His photographs carried mythic iconographies mixed with the dailiness of the regions; themes of monsoon and floods; and the natural unity of people and animals interacting and coexisting within the various terrains of India.

His photographs are patriotic. They expose the paradoxical truths of his native land: of agony and tenderness, of commotion and serenity.
