Last week, HBO Max’s Scene in Black celebrated storytelling, music, and culture with the following events at The Chicory and the Ace Hotel in New Orleans.

HBO Max’s Welcome Mixer

On Friday, July 1 HBO Max curated a mixer to celebrate and uplift the creative community of New Orleans with ‘Katrina Babies’ directed by Edward Buckles Jr. With hors d’oeuvres and great music, guests were guaranteed to have a memorable time. A beautiful array of flowers covered the backdrop of a photo booth where everyone had an opportunity to print and send pictures to themselves to capture the moment! As the afternoon progressed, Director, Edward Buckles Jr. shared a few words to express his sentiments behind creating ‘Katrina Babies’ and let us in on the vulnerability that is captured in this film. Be sure to check it out this August on HBO Max!

HBO Max’s Rap Sh!t Screening and Panel Conversation

On Saturday, July 2 HBO Max held an exclusive screening of the pilot for the new comedy series RapSh!t, created and written by Issa Rae. The first episode had the audience engaged and filled with laughter as the stars, Aida Osman as ‘Shawna’ and KaMilion as ‘Mia’, played high school friends from Miami working to make their rap dreams come true. The cast and creatives involved in the production were present for a panel conversation led by entertainment host and journalist, Gia Peppers.

Closing out the panel with a few bars from each member of the cast, viewers are sure to look forward to what’s next on this season of RapSh!t. To round out the evening, Scene in Black took over the Ace Hotel with a DJ set and surprise musical guests Kali and Light Skin Keisha to bring the essence of Rap Sh!t to life.

HBO Max’s POV Brunch & Panel Conversation

On Saturday, July 2nd HBO Max POV hosted a brunch & panel discussion.

HBO Max POV is an initiative created to amplify the voices of BIPOC talent that work behind-the-scenes within HBO and HBO Max programming. This panel delved into behind-the-scenes talents’ respective journey’s in their careers, their life experiences and work relative to HBO programming. Panelists included, Syreeta Singleton (Showrunner and Executive Producer, HBO Max Rap Sh!t), Rikki Hughes (Showrunner and Executive Producer, HBO Max The Hype), Edward Buckles Jr. (Director, HBO Documentary Katrina Babies), and Joe Guidry (Director, HBO Max Sweet Life).

Overall, the panel discussion created an impactful and meaningful brunch space. Each panelist offered transparency on what it looked like navigating the industry and upholding their own artistry. They gave advice to other creators in the room on how to trust their own creative process, gems were dropped and delicious food was served!

Harlem Pride and Kaleidoscope Hair Products: Jesseca Harris-Dupart

by Gabrielle Babson July 5, 2022
written by Gabrielle Babson

On Saturday, June 25th, Founder and CEO of Kaleidoscope Hair Products, Jesseca Harris-Dupart, accomplished an industry first by setting the Guinness World Record title for the largest donation of haircare products in 24 hours.

The brand collaborated with  Harlem Pride during their 13th annual Celebration Day, alongside prominent guests including Mayor Eric Adams, to unveil this incredible activation on stage to a crowd of more than 20,000 attendees from across the country.

Prior to the celebration, we had an opportunity to speak with Jessica Harris-Dupart about how Kaleidoscope Hair Products came to be and its continued growth in the hair care space.

The Knockturnal: As the first black, openly gay founder in the multicultural hair space — How do you think your identity has influenced the impact you’ve made in this space?

Jesseca Harris- Dupart: It’s not like I went into this like “Hey, let me be the first!” I have just been very transparent about who I am and I hope my journey and my life can show everybody that they can do anything. You don’t have to stay within the guidelines of what people try to make you. Whoever you are, whoever you love, whatever you do, you can be successful.

The Knockturnal: What motivated your desire to enter the hair care space?

Jesseca Harris- Dupart: I was a hairstylist for over 20 years and one of my clients cheated on me and went to another hairstylist. She ended up having a bald spot in the center of her head from a ponytail install and bobby pins. It made me want to find a solution; I wanted to be able to fix this. From then on, I started exploring what that would look like. I started speaking to chemists and I never expected it to be from behind a chair, I never expected to retire. God just had a different story for me.

The Knockturnal: What are 2 of your best selling products from the Kaleidoscope Hair Product line?

Jesseca Harris- Dupart: Currently, it would be the Original Miracle Drops which is a light hair treatment and the Pecan Pie Growth Booster Oil. Both products are our top growth boosting agents.

After declaring the Guinness World Record title, Jesseca and leaders from Harlem Pride spoke to the impact this donation will have in the community, followed by a surprise performance from Jesseca’s new wife, Atlanta hip-hop legend Da Brat.
