Human Rights Watch Film Festival Review: ‘Inside the Chinese Closet’

by Frances Raybaud June 8, 2016
written by Frances Raybaud

In America, we have pride parades. In China, there are covert fake marriage meetups for gay men to find lesbian women to marry. And this is just one of the abject differences in our cultures outlined in Inside the Chinese Closet, a gripping testimony of two parallel journeys through the veiled lives of LGBT Chinese people.

One, a lesbian named Cherry, tries to avoid dealing with children even as her mother desperately attempts to buy one illegally so she has someone to “take care of her when she’s old”. Her fights with her family become less pointed and increasingly unguarded under the scrutiny of the camera, and she even deigns to discuss her girlfriend. Growing up in a rural village, she is unable to even attempt to explain being a lesbian to people like her father- who she says would beat her to death if he knew.

Andy, a gay man “popular in the bear community”, or a specific type of gay male subculture, is trying to find a child. His father demands a child and he is determined to fulfill the request. When attempting to buy one from Taiwan, he discovers recent laws have made it illegal to take a child there. He turns to the fake marriage plot, meeting with several different lesbians and assuring them he will accept artificial insemination rather than, as one derisively puts it, “the natural way”.

What makes the documentary so chilling is the fact that these closeted LGBT people are not the youths we’ve come to know, struggling with their identity and figuring out how to navigate through the rainbow cities of America. These are middle-aged Chinese citizens, well into their lives and careers, who have known who they are for quite some time. They just can’t tell anyone- save for trusted friends and some, not all, family members. Another gripping film from the Human Rights Watch film festival, this will make anyone comfortable in the changing ways of America remember that Western ideals haven’t reached all corners of the globe.

‘Weiner’: The Mayor We Once Wanted [Film Review]

Ashlee Simpson, Evan Ross & Jonathan Scott Attend Swiffer and Mr. Clean Event

by Frances Raybaud May 20, 2016
written by Frances Raybaud

Design enthusiast and pop personality Ashlee Simpson joined Jonathan Scott of Property Brothers yesterday at an event sponsored by Swiffer and Mr. Clean to discuss home cleaning and other home improvement. Simpson was excited to discuss not only home cleaning, but her current projects.

This is pretty exciting.

Yeah! Yeah, it’s always good to have a clean slate, clean house, especially with our daughter.

So what do you particularly like about the Swiffer brand?

About the Swiffer brand, it makes it easy. Leaving crumbs on the floor and Jagger’s starting to crawl, so it makes life easy. It’s easy to just press the button. house cleaning is important!

Do you work on home improvement a lot?

Well, I mean having two children, I’m like yeah! So I have to clean the house up, kind of organize things, and I feel like now that it’s spring, we just got another fresh start, yes it’s very important. Especially with all the toys everywhere.

How are you liking New York City?

I love New York!

What musicians do you listen to right now?

Ooh, interesting. Well I love Evan’s mom, Mama D (Diana Ross), I love Karen O, Sade.

So you’ve done some theatre?

I love doing theatre, it’s so much fun. I’m not looking to do any right now, but I’d love to do it again.

So what are you working on right now?

I’m doing an album with my husband. We’ve been writing it, discovering it. Soulful, a little rap, it’s been fun.

Jonathan Scott of Property Brothers loved discussing New York, which we all know is a dirty city, and his preferences with cleaning.

So, what’s your home cleaning philosophy?

I’m not a germaphobe. However, when I’m showing a room to someone, I want it to feel crisp and clean. The only reason people don’t keep their home spic and span is because it’s difficult. So if we make it easy, people will actually clean.

So what about your childhood? Because I bet children don’t want to be home cleaners or in real estate-

No, actually, my brother and I were actors. We made hangers when we were seven, because our father wanted us to get a job. It ended up actually being a huge success- this one woman ordered them by the thousands. Imagine, seven year olds, making hanger by the thousands…and then we didn’t want to be struggling actors, so my brother got a real estate license and I went to school for design, and then we just went from there.

What do you like about New York City?

It’s funny you ask, because earlier today we were promoting the event by walking down the city sidewalks with Swiffers, and people were watching us like “is he really cleaning a New York City sidewalk?” Can you imagine what was on the bottom of that thing? It was really funny to see. We’re filming here too, and it’s interesting because you’re in an apartment you can’t escape the filth, you can’t escape the grime…it’s right in front of your face. You really want to make sure you have multifunctional furniture pieces that also function as storage, that you can put away. So one, you can get the clutter away, and then you can clean.

So there you have it. Perhaps by the time you next feel inspired to clean, you’ll have a new album by Evan Ross and Ashlee Simpson to listen to!

The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center Hosts Annual Monte Cristo Award Ceremony [Recap]

by Frances Raybaud May 11, 2016
written by Frances Raybaud

“It’s heavy, isn’t it?”

George C. Wolfe accepted his award graciously and with more than a little humor, hoisting the notoriously heavy Monte Cristo award up in his arms with aplomb and cheeky dramatics. This was not a stressful night. There was no suspense. There may have been only one winner that night, but everyone knew him, and no one was complaining.

The atmosphere on the red carpet was breezy and exciting, everyone there not in anticipation of either losing or winning, but just there to celebrate one man. And what a man he is. George C. Wolfe, renowned director of Angels in America and countless others, including Shuffle Along, which has just received 10 Tony nominations for its outstanding status as musical and civil rights activism, more than deserved the award bestowed upon him last night. And everyone seemed to think so.

Preston Whiteway, Executive Director of the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, explained the award as such:

“The Monto Cristo award is named after the house where our namesake, Eugene O’Neill, grew up,   and of course he set two of the greatest America dramas in that house, the Long Day’s Journey into Night, being revived this season, and Ah, Wilderness!, his only comedy. And so with that sort of balance on both sides of the scale there with theatre, with comedy and tragedy, I think it’s a perfect name for this award which is given to an artist who’s pioneered in the same way that Eugene O’Neill has- and on top of all of that, it was his father’s greatest role, the Count of Monte Cristo.”

He further went on to explain how Wolfe exemplifies a recipient of the award:

“Few can match George Wolfe’s trailblazing leader as a writer, as a director- he’s a multi-hyphenate, he’s a writer, he’s an actor, he’s a director, he’s an artistic producer, he does it all. There really could be nobody more worthy for an award honoring significant artists in American theatre.”

As for Wolfe himself, when asked about his pioneering work on African-American and LGBT theatre, he had only this to say, which he later repeated in his acceptance speech:

“I wouldn’t even call it activism, I just would call it – I don’t know, just responsibility. When you live in a world where you are in a capacity to hire people or you make decisions, then you may need to make decisions that are reflective of the world in which you live.”

Responsibility is something Wolfe holds very true to his heart. In his acceptance speech after the dinner, he thanked everyone in the room for their support as he existed as a fledgling young writer, then director in the theatre world. His last words were “Thank you so much”, and it wasn’t for the award, but for the help he had received along the way that led him to this moment, to being able to have such an impact on the world through theatre. He feels responsible in turn to “act as not only a director, but a mentor”. It’s the true spirit of the theatrical world- everyone collaborates. Whether they are actually participating in the movement itself onstage, like Savion Glover, Tony Award-winning choreographer that performed that night in celebration of longtime associate Wolfe, or assisting in offstage things like production, like the presenter Broadway producer Hal Prince, winner of the most Tony Awards ever, everyone is a part of the process.

George C. Wolfe understands this as a fundamental rule of theatre, and that, along with his genius and talent, deserves ample celebration.
