Exclusive: Ayesha Curry Talks Sweet July Skincare Launch

by Danielle Niecey July 25, 2023
written by Danielle Niecey

On July 13, 2023. Pineapple  Club, Manhattan, New York.—Ayesha Curry, a Canadian-American actress, cookbook author, restaurant owner, cooking television personality, and the wife of Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, takes another confident step in the direction of solidifying herself as a multi-hyphenate phenom.

Ayesha whips up a new skincare line that has caught the attention of holistic beauty enthusiasts. Sweet July Skin, her newest brand, is made with Ayesha setting her focus on quality ingredients that stem from her passion for culinary arts. The Womenpreneur has come to realize the invaluable component of quality ingredients in both food and its impact on our overall health and how positively our bodies respond when we incorporate them into our day-to-day diets and routines.  Ayesha introduced, “Sweet July Skin” at the Pineapple Club on July 13th to a lounge filled with media personalities, media press outlets, and brand influencers who mingled and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and sipped cocktails as they awaited the big reveal.  Ayesha took center stage near an aesthetically balanced backdrop where she described the Sweet July Skin product line as ‘a deeply personal three-year adventure for her that was inspired by the wisdom of her mother and her grandmother’, both hailing from Jamaica. Praising their intuitive sense and knowledge of the power of Caribbean ingredients and the natural sunlight absorbed by the plants and vegetation; the Entrepreneur honors tried and true traditions that cultivate and maintain our natural beauty through the fruits of the earth and deliver a nutrient-dense skincare brand that feels like a self-care retreat!

The lightweight, fruit-filled, and pleasantly scented formula found in the new product line is simple, and clean and combines “sensory-rich properties” of the superfoods: papaya, guava, and lychee seeds to yield proven and visible results. For those that are new to skincare, or who like me, are searching for a hydrating and effective skincare line the significance the Sweet July Skincare line offers the user benefits in the following ways:

  • It is a simple three-step kit that is easy to follow, routine-friendly, and starts in your shower
  • The formula is effective and results are immediately noticeable, improving with consistent use

  • The first application is the Pava Exfoliating Cleanser, it’s a cream-based, nonfoaming formula that contains fermented papaya, lychee seed powder, glycolic and lactic acid, and guava extracts. The cream-based formula acts as a gentle cleanser that removes makeup and dirt and refreshes dull skin through exfoliation.  The benefits deliver antioxidants to the skin with a light tingle as it works and leaves the skin feeling renewed and invigorated. Lychee seed is packed with numerous benefits from anti-aging, to toning to treating and preventing sunburns.

  • The Pava Toner is a lightly scented liquid formula that aids to achieve smoother, softer glowing skin when used in conjunction with the daily Pava Exfoliator. The formula is a blend of glycolic acid, fermented papaya, and guava which helps to resurface and dissolve dead skin cells and aid with skin turnover.  Papaya is beneficial for the skin as it exfoliates dead skin cells and removes pollutants from the skin. This superfruit also fades pigmentation and enhances the secretion of collagen when used topically. Guava is popularly known for its high content of vitamin C, which has been used to brighten skin when applied to its surface. Guava also regenerates the skin, aids in skin elasticity and it releases water to your body when consumed or applied. Upon application to the skin, the toner cools the surface of your face and neck, soothing and cooling as a perfect follow-up to the exfoliation. According to the market studies for Sweet July Skin, 94% of users agreed that after four weeks of use of both the Pava Exfoliator and the Toner, their skin felt smoother and healthier and 89% of users agreed that the appearance of their skin improved significantly.

  • The third and final step in the skincare line includes the Irie Power Face Oil. The face oil acts as a clarifier and included the heavy hitters: neem seed oil, turmeric root oil, salicylic acid, and squalene.  Neem oil has been proven to treat skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, ringworm, and worts. It is anti-aging and promotes wound healing. The addition of turmeric root acts as a natural skin brightener, aids in creating a natural glow to the skin, moisturizes skin and rids the surface of the skin of dark circles. Salicylic acid reduces swelling, and redness and contributes to dead cell turnover, revealing a fresh layer of skin with each use. Lastly, squalene oil keeps the skin clear and reduces the visibility of fine lines that accompany again. The benefits of Irie Oil include a notable reduction of inflammation and redness; a feeling of nourishment (100% of the consumer test group, consisting of 40 participants after 6 weeks of use expressed this); and 95% of users praised the healthy glow they experienced after using the clarifying oil.

With such thought and careful consideration placed into creating this skincare line, it was of utmost importance that we sat with Mrs. Curry to gain exclusive insight into her personal take on self-care through skin care.

Danielle Niecey, The Knockturnal: What is the most important principle to keep in mind when it comes to skincare?

Ayesha Curry: Consistency is so important when it comes to skincare. Setting a routine and sticking with it has made the biggest difference for me in seeing my skin transform.

Danielle Niecey, The Knockturnal: Is your line geared to a specific skin type (dry/oily/combination/sensitive skin) or demographic?

Ayesha Curry: In formulating Sweet July Skin, it was so important to me that the products were clean and gentle to use. I wanted to make sure that a wide range of skin types could enjoy and benefit from these products. We also made sure that when it came to consumer testing, we had participants with a broad range of skin types, with 60% being women with darker skin tones. Sweet July [Skin] is all about inclusivity, and our skincare line is no different.

Danielle Niecey, The Knockturnal: There’s a strong emphasis placed on the three-year journey you’ve taken that inspired and cultivated this skincare line: ‘What holistic need/prompting lead you to begin this journey that led to the creation of Sweet July Skin’?

Ayesha Curry: I have always had acne-prone skin, and as I got older, I would think back to my mom and grandma who always had amazing skin. They used to always tell me about the power of ingredients like Caribbean superfoods – using simple everyday products to treat all kinds of skin maladies. I finally started taking these recommendations to heart, so much so, it inspired the Sweet July Skin line. At the foundation of each of these products are nutrient-packed island ingredients like papaya, guava, and lychee seed – all inspired by my heritage and the strong Jamaican women in my life.

Danielle Niecey, The Knockturnal: Beauty is only skin deep: Can you share your philosophy on skin integrity as it pertains to self-care, personal beauty, self-esteem, etc.

Ayesha Curry: For me, healthy skin has been a source of confidence. It’s the first thing people see when they meet you, so it’s worth investing in. Through the years I’ve also learned to really appreciate the ritual of my self-care routine, taking a little time out of a hectic schedule has become something I look forward to; which is why I wanted products that not just work but are enjoyable to use. Everything in the  [ Sweet July Skin] line is sensory, it truly is like treating your skin to an island vacation.

We closed the interview with a huge token of gratitude for her time and a quick selfie in which Ayesha absolutely lit up with an extraordinary glow. I couldn’t wait to get home and to try the goodies bag made available at the exclusive Pineapple Express Club gathering for Sweet July Skin.

As a personal account to speak to the integrity of this brand, I am on my second (transitioning into my third) week of usage of this skincare line, and I am impressed with the results that Sweet July Skin has had on my skin in such a short period of time. I have always suffered from chronic dry skin after exposure to harsh detergent-based soaps in my adolescent years, dark circles under my eyes, and scarring to my pigmentation from hormonal acne in my adult life. I have struggled to find products that my skin responds well to. I’ve experimented with everything from Eucerin cream, Cetaphil, and noxema creams, to Rose Hip Oil; shea butter, and cocoa butter down to Vaseline and this is the best that my skin has ever appeared or responded to a product. My favorite installment of this line is the Pava Exfoliator. It has a gentle tingle and the scent is inviting, and refreshing, and the product clarifies the surface of my skin in one sweep. I usually apply it twice because I love the way it feels on my face. After use,  the surface of my skin is a clean finish without residue or the harsh dryness that I’ve often found in other skincare products that contain alcohol.

The Sweet July Skin skincare line hydrates my skin from the moment I apply the exfoliator to the last drop of Irie Power Face Oil on my fingertips to my face. I’ve noticed that rough patches that once posed themselves as problem areas and where I struggled to achieve or hold moisture are no longer problem areas that I have to find ways to cover up or hide. My makeup applies better since the surface of my skin is smoother. The best part is that this product allows my skin to breathe and now I opt to wear less foundation and concealer (if any) as I have nothing to cover and want to show off my brightened, glowing skin. I think the radiance comes from the turmeric root oil in the blend. I now opt for a volumizing mascara, an ombre brow, eyeliner, and a stay-proof matte lip color to compliment the reemergence of my healthier layer of skin. I appreciate that the kit is simple and doesn’t include too many bottles or steps to follow for me to see results. It is easy to apply without throwing my routine into a frenzy and it smells absolutely amazing! I wish I grabbed four bags of this stuff so I would have a long-lasting supply of my own. I will definitely be purchasing more of this line for myself, my friends, and my family and continuing to richly reap the amazing benefits it yields.

Sweet July Skin is available for purchase on the company website: SweetJulySkin.com

Denim + Streetwear Brand KSUBI X A$AP TyY Shutdown SoHo to Launch Limited Edition Moto-Inspired Capsule Collection

by Danielle Niecey July 2, 2023
written by Danielle Niecey
  • Wednesday, June 28th 2023. KSUBI Store, SoHo, Fashion District, New York—The Australian Global denim streetwear line, KSUBI, that emerged as the hottest fashion line, infamously known for their signature distressed denim and box cross logo, reinforced their reputation to stand apart from the crowd of traditional denim based brands with their most recent collaboration. The DIY rebel of style partnered with rising rapstar from Harlem, A$AP TyY of the A$AP Mobb, to launch a Limited Edition Moto-Inspired Capsule Collection. A$AP TyY arrived at the jam-packed KSubi SoHo  (located at 26 Greene Street) on a four-wheeler in moto-royale fashion. The artist, adorning a two piece denim set from the official moto-inspired line, took to stage shortly after and performed songs from his new EP, “1840 Lex” that officially dropped on Thursday, June 29th.

The inspiration behind the new nine-piece collection with KSUBI stems from A$AP TyY’s love for motosports and street racing. With TyY’s undeniable passion for the sport, streetwear fashion and heavy involvement as a multi-hyphenated creative, the conception and design of the capsule collection extended its spirit into the heart of the content creation for his new EP, “1840 Lex”. The 7-song music project brings in its wake A$AP TyY’s refreshingly eclectic sound fused with hip hop, trap and electronic music; the same audible styling that caught the ears of the legendary A$AP Rocky and A$AP Yams. A$AP TyY’s fashion-facing and trend setting appeal has been the vehicle thrusting him forward in the industry as an icon.

“I had the idea of doing moto-style denim and jerseys for a while. If you know your denim you know KSUBI. There’s no denying how influential KSUBI has been on hip-hop culture, and its ties to A$AP [Mobb], so it only made sense to bring this collection to life with the help of both of our teams”, said A$AP TyY.

There’s no formal way to say this but, the EP “1840 Lex”,  is pure fire; coupled with a brand that leads the way in innovate streetwear, that’s a brilliant pairing. It’s a masterful adrenaline rush with blends of many genres and styles found in trap, punk, golden era hip hop and is ladened with synths and pitch distortion as found in electronic music. A$AP TyY’s performance on record displays a thoughtful expression of raw emotion. His hunger for artistic freedom bleeds through a confident showcase of his vocal coloring, choice of instrumental accompaniments and release of emotion through his penned lyrics. A$AP TyY’s ability to explode on track at any moment illustrates the energy behind KSubi’s hard-edged appeal. With Ksubi and A$AP TyY partnering on the creative direction for the music video of TyY’s newest single, ‘Purge’, from the “1840 Lex” EP,  the two iconic figures merge their brands effortlessly.

KSUBI highlights that in the exclusive nine-piece collection, their collaboration with A$AP TyY emphasizes the focus on the ‘collateral damage as stressors to the fabric of the garments that incur while participating in the sport’ and ‘attempting to maintain the garment’s original integrity as motosport ware’ as part of the central theme throughout KSubi and A$AP TyY’s Limited Edition Capsule designs. Championing items of the in-demand collection include: two racing jersey designs with co-branded KSUBI & A$AP custom pieces influenced by sponsor logos on the jersey’s of the professional moto-riders. KSubi shines in their custom faded wash techniques on their iconic slim-fit Ksubi denim, which is also included in the collection, plus a t-shirt and hoodie offer the collection an ‘already lived in feel’, that is achieved only after ‘breaking in’  the traditional hold of new attire. The jersey-fabric pieces are accentuated in distressing fashion which lends a heavy nod and silent applaud to the look and feel of natural wear and tear. The denim has also been moto-style treated to provide oil stain effects, ‘gravel splatter’ artwork on the back of the garments, and repair style embroidery on the crotch to give the deteriorated feeling of motorsport ware.

The KSUBI x A$AP TyY’s, Limited Edition Moto-Inspired Capsule Collection, will be available from 29th June 2023 at KSUBI stores in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and London, as well as brand’s official online retail store: www.KSubi.com and selected retailers globally which including Saks 5th Avenue in the US and Culture Kings in Australia.

“1840 Lex” by A$AP TyY is available on all major music streaming platforms Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Tidal and more.

TORO LOCO NYC’s Official 2023 Summer Kick Off Party!

by Danielle Niecey June 12, 2023
written by Danielle Niecey

May 31, 2023. Toro Loco Restaurant, Financial District. Manhattan New York– Toro Loco (Spanish for crazy bull), located at 15 Stone Street in the Financial District, launched a Summer Kick off Party in honor of the unveiling of “The Garden” their newest dining and event space just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Toro Loco, whose official opening date was May 3, 2023 is popularly known for their delicious cloud-light guacamole blend and heaping portions of nachos; over-the-top dishes such as the Birria Tortas and their mouthwatering cuisines; also doubles as an event space. The Ground Floor, which is the primary entranceway into the hangout destination, holds a capacity of up to 150 standing guests; 50 seated with bar service (domestic and imports on tap). The Second Floor, whose entrance is located directly upstairs, holds a capacity of 120 standing and 60 people limit for seated guests. The newly unveiled area, “The Garden”, Toro Loco’s newest outdoor space, maxes out to 60 guests. The Garden, an outdoor Terrace, is best suited for intimate gatherings during warmer temperatures.

The Summer Kickoff party opened with DJ Hi Ki, playing several sets that included music from Bruno Mars to Beyonce blended with classics from the 80’s and 90’s and present-day hits! The restaurant showcased their signature dishes, the delicious chicken and beef Empanadas, savory steak tacos and much more. Guests mingled as the kitchen served up rounds of delectable bites for sampling. An open bar provided refreshing cocktails such as the spicy off menu beverage, the Girasol, a tasty blend of Bacardi, mango chili, rum, mango lemon, and melon liqueur.  Guests danced and kicked back to enjoy the open sky view and the cool breeze floating from the Piers nearby.

Being thoroughly impressed by the food offerings, I took a step away from the Garden to browse the full menu. Beginning with Para La Mesa (or ‘for the table’) section, the appetizers, I came across some interesting finds such as the Sopa De Tortilla, a rich tomato-based soup made with chicken, guajillo and topped with crispy tortilla strips, sour cream, avocado, shaved radish and Manchego cheese. I’d recommend that savory comfort meal on a cold or rainy day. The Toro Loco wings, one of my personal favorites, is coated in a thick habanero agave glaze and served with a cool side of jalapeno ranch dressing to dip., another delicious item on the menu.

For guests in search of a much lighter dining experience, the Ensalada (salads) like the Mexican Cobb salad or the California Bowl, served with corn, avocado, queso fresco, cherry toppings, iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, jicama, red onions, ranch dressing in an edible taco bowl, are sure to be satisfying finds.

Before returning back to the Garden to witness the return of the infamous “Flaming Skull”, I took one more peek at the Taqueria (the specialty Mexican dishes) and the Platos Fuerte (Heavy Dishes) sections of the menu to take a mental note of  a few additional dishes I’d like to try on my next visit.  The Chimichangas, my favorite Mexican dish; the Surf & Turf, a grilled Sirloin steak served with charred octopus, chimichurri, pico de gallo, pickled red onions, radish, salsa verde cruda and corn tortillas.  Lastly, the Cauliflower Al Pastor, a vegetarian friendly option made with Cauliflower Al Pastor, pineapple, guacamole, onion, cilantro, chile de arbol salsa with a corn tortilla.

I ventured back to the Garden to find the guests centered on the bartender and taking candid photos of the Flaming Skull in preparation for its “flame on top”. As the bartender carefully placed the lighter to the rim of the glass, lightly dusting the cocktail to boost the dramatic appeal, the guests clapped and cheered with great fascination.

I highly recommend checking out this very cool, laid-back atmosphere after work, Friday night or a Saturday night out on the town. If you’re feeling adventurous, Toro Loco also hosts the “Bottomless Brunch” Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm (last seating at 3:30 pm); and Drag Sundays, hosted by: LAS BORRACHAS.

Reservations for dining at Toro Loco is available on their website, including their menu: www.ToroLocoNYC.com or if you’re sold on this spot already, you can Book Your Toro Loco Reservation Now on Resy!

NBA 2K23 Takes Over SoHo #WithAMEX

by Danielle Niecey December 18, 2022
written by Danielle Niecey

Thursday, December 8, 2022. SOHO Loft, Manhattan, New York. – The American Express x NBA 2K23 Gaming Lab partnership event is a four-day immersive pop-up experience in SoHo that began December 8-11, and gave fans a literal shot at sharpening their 2K skills on and off the court with one on one lessons from coaches and game experts. Day one of that 4-day activation was held on  a chilly Thursday evening in Soho. A loft started heating up in preparation for the American Express x NBA 2K23 Gaming Lab. In attendance to the cool event were media press outlets, game enthusiasts, social media brand influencers and diehard fans of the NBA 2K franchise.

NBA 2K streamer Kristopher London, New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu and NBA 2K host Alexis Morgan participate in a fireside chat at the American Express x NBA 2K23 Lab in New York on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022. (Jason DeCrow/AP Images for American Express)

The event featured a Fireside Q&A chat moderated by producer, famed NBA 2K host and gaming influencer Alexis Morgan. Alexis is an engaging, humorous and astonishing host whose resume includes  experience in live show and studio hosting, as well as covering A-list red carpet celebrity events here in New York City and as far out as Los Angeles. American professional basketball player for the New York Liberty of the Women’s National Basketball Association, Sabrina Loneus, one of the interviewed panelists, shared her admiration of the new NBA 2K23 game upgrades that now includes teams and players from the WNBA.

She also revealed that her favorite part about the game is “playing as myself because a lot of her moves in the game are similar,” she also added that it’s coaching her along the way in her styling, “…oh I might need to tweak that move a little bit”. The skilled athlete continued on to say that though she loves gaming with her brothers, but that the reality is that she spends most of her time playing and staying conditioned on the court.

Kristopher “Kris” London, English-American YouTuber known for his basketball and gaming videos, and member of the NBA-focused web group 2HYPE, was the second featured panelist for the Q & A with Alexis during the Fireside Q & A. When asked the question, “What do you like most about [NBA] 2K [23]?”  Kris shared that the game allowed him the opportunity to express himself and that the game has allowed him to showcase his passion for gaming, basketball, and allowed him to expand his audience online. He also mentioned that his favorite features on the new release is “this year’s drip”, and that he couldn’t wait to spend the remainder of the weekend at the American Express x NBA 2K23 Gaming Lab, “taking names”.

His light hearted banter was centered around the lab gaming areas stationed on both walls that lead up to the court. Several small hubs ran along a long side of the event space with two chairs on the left and right viewing angles of a large screen television for the guest to test the NBA 2K23 game. At each hub, digital-gaming coaches were available to aid onlookers and participants in upping their gaming skills on the 2K platform.

My favorite station at the gaming activation was The Highlight Hub. The Highlight Hub was a large interactive half court where fans followed a lit pathway on the floor of the court  to  recreate the iconic shots programmed in the NBA 2K23 Game. Remaining guests sat court side engaging with the charming hospitality team, enjoying tasty chicken bao buns, brisket sliders, caprese skewers, refreshments and other mouthwatering hors-d’œuvrs. The lively crowd cheered on the courageous ball players who voluntarily performed on the court for 60 seconds to make as many successful free throw shots through the hoop as they could before the buzzer brought their scrimmage against the time to a halt.

The event was a hit! All NBA 2K fans in attendance and streaming via Twitch for the American Express x NBA 2K23 Gaming Lab, received a complimentary POAP digital certificate to commemorate their experience. American Express card holders received special perks in the form of NBA 2K23 locker codes to improve their in-game avatar’s skill level. Fans in attendance were also given the opportunity to get their sneakers cleaned by Jason Markk (founded by Jason Mark Angsuvarn in California), a top of the line shoe product and accessory brand that creates products for sneaker maintenance.

On Saturday night of the event when rapper, Jack Harlow, joined the event as an on-site guest, alongside comedian, Druski, NBA 2K23 on a Twitch livestream.  It was definitely an awesome event and one that I’ll do my best to catch on the next release of NBA 2K and American Express.

What A Wonderful Film! “Louis Armstrong’s: Black & Blues” Documentary Airs on Apple TV Plus

by Danielle Niecey December 12, 2022
written by Danielle Niecey

December 5, 2022, Bryant Park Hotel, Manhattan, NY – On the evening of December 5th, a room full of media writers and press professionals filled the intimate screening room at the Bryant Park Hotel in Manhattan to view the October 28th, release of An Apple Original Film, Louis Armstrong’s: Black & Blues. The penetrative documentary on the life of Jazz Trumpeter and Vocalist, Louis Armstrong, was directed and produced by Sacha Jenkins; co-produced by Sara Bernstein, Justin Wilkes, Julie Anderson and Executively Produced by Brian Grazer, Michele Anthony and David Blackman.

The documentary film, Louis Armstrong: Black & Blues, takes the audience on a journey that highlights the life of the world renowned talent, soloist, jazz pioneer Louis Armstrong, more affectionately known as “Satchmo” the Ambassador.  For those who did not know, Louis received this derivative of his original nickname ‘satchel mouth’, a term he picked up from the way his lips cradled the mouthpiece of his trumpet. In the early 1930’s on a trip overseas to Britain, Melody Maker magazine editor, Percy Brooks, mispronounced the nickname he likely acquired while researching Louis’ musical career and accidentally called him,”Satchmo” in his greeting. For Louis, the father of scat and one of the most influential musicians in history, it phonetically made sense and he held tight to his colleague’s “bloop” (and the blip) for his namesake.

The tokens this documentary film offers to the audience are deposited that way. Archival footage and never before heard private conversations reveal the impassioned side of the musical prodigy that most never knew existed.  The film uncovers the mystery behind the ever-seen-grinning, “What A Wonderful World” singer.  Presented in the film are photos, with names, with dates, with detailed stories from his life, and short reflective segments in the form of letters narrated by one of my favorite living hip hop legends Nasir “Nas” Jones. Those who met and coincided with the beloved Louis Armstrong, helped to trace the outline of Armstrong’s past with lost footage; pulling from the roots of his humble upbringing in New Orleans, his natural inclination to work hard and hustle for every cent he earned, regardless of the social climate; to his discovery and exploration of music as a calling; his exposure to racism and its impacts on him professionally and psychologically; and his peaceful transition in his Corona, New York home, in 1971.

Hectah Arias, the art director on the film, does a remarkable job storyboarding the narration of Armstrong’s story, visually. Parallel to Louis’s freedom of expression, the visual art unfolds, echoing the likeness of a moving collage on screen. The brilliance of the visual design in the film shines through with the usage of reels, the placement of diagrams, excerpts and sound clips inspired by the musician, who intuitively knew that he would need to record the events of his life for future generations to build on. Whether hobby or heightened awareness, the prolific Louis clipped and saved parts of news articles, concert and show bills; or wrote by hand, the state of affairs of the world and the internal dialogue he often chose not share publicly until the latter parts of his life. Louis knew his influence and wielded his power with skill and tact, even to the detriment of the reputation he held within his community during the civil rights movements when he opted out of protest to “play his horn,” instead.

Another great feature in this documentary is that it is jam packed with detailed information to support the points it claims. For example, Louis Armstrong being considered the pioneer of modern Jazz music; the directors strategically place an archived clip of a media journalist explaining the intricate composition of Jazz music in a simplified way. He explains what made Louis Armstrong’s technique ahead of its time and explains the ways in which Louis weaved his instrumentation and vocals between notes. His mastery of the art form had not been done, or at least documented before with such wide reaching appeal or visibility.

At the end of the film, before the cocktails and the hors d’oeuvres, Directors Sacha Jenkins and  Sara Bernstein participated in a live Q&A where the audience members were able to ask questions about the film, the inspiration behind the making of the documentary and learned more about the directors’ experience working on this project as a collaborative team.  To our surprise, Director and Producer, Sacha Jenkins shared a paranormal encounter he and the crew had while visiting the home of the late Louis Armstrong and credited the “phantom spinning record” as a blessing and sign off from Armstrong himself, that he had his hand in the retelling of his life through his art.

What I love most about this film is that it is subtly educational and it offers more insight beyond the life of the man. As a music lover, I’ve always wanted to appreciate Jazz on a fundamental level and I was offered that opportunity to comprehend the genre through Louis Armstrong’s documentary. I applaud the film for educating me as a viewer on the historic events surrounding his career setbacks, such as him encountering legal troubles for marijuana possession or the legal ramifications he faced for participating in a hometown parade in blackface. For many years, I thought it to be a prejudiced joke that African Americans were depicted by this character in movies. I was further taken aback when I learned that its creation was to incorporate black characters into tv & film stories without needing to hire minority actors and actresses for the roles. This troubling realization was triggering and illustrated the aspects of Louis Armstrong’s career that he silently endured having to perform in hotels he was not even allowed to eat in, sleep in or relieve himself in. However, his tenacity and ability to maintain his composure and fill the world with his freedom in song spoke volumes of him as a human being; one that was able to leave behind a beautiful legacy for his community and the world at large.

I highly recommend the film, Louis Armstrong’s: Black & Blues, for anyone that’s intrigued by splendid visuals on screen; those interested in exploring and understanding the origin of Jazz music; and peeking beyond the veil of one of the biggest influencers in American music culture, the polished yet animated Trumpeter, Louis Armstrong. What a wonderful film!
