Chef Alton Brown & Neuriva’s All New 30-Day Brain Health Challenge Kick-Off

by Danielle Niecey February 26, 2024
written by Danielle Niecey

Wednesday, February 21st, 2024, Hearth Restaurant. Manhattan, New York —What if I told you 40,000 people in the US know of a clinically tested way to boost memory, learning, focus, reasoning, accuracy, concentration and mental alertness in one dose of a naturally sourced dietary supplement? Well, they have, and I am here to share the secret with you.

It’s been determined through a national study of 40,000 American shopper’s that Neuriva is the Most Innovative Product in Wellness Supplements of 2024. Championed for its efficacy in enhancing cognitive performance, each capsule of Neuriva contains naturally sourced ingredients that include, Neurofactor (Coffee Berry, 100 mL) a natural extract derived from Coffea arabica coffee cherries that contains a unique profile of polyphenols shown in clinical studies to stimulate production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a vital neuroprotein involved in overall brain health; and Plant Sourced PS (Phosphatidylserine, 100 mL) a compound now made from cabbage or soy. Phosphatidylserine, Plant Sourced PS, is used for Alzheimer disease and normal age-related decline in memory and thinking skills.

To celebrate its launch, Neuriva, the leading brain health supplement, along with renowned TV Personality, Food-Scientist, Cinemotographer, Voice Actor and Chef, Alton Brown, hosted the “Neuriva 30-Day Brain Health Challenge Kick Off”, an intimate dinner party highlighting brain-boosting foods at the Hearth Restaurant in Manhattan, New York. Chef Alton Brown, a longtime user of the brain-support supplement, partnered with the brand to support the 30-Day Brain Challenge  by highlighting his favorite Butterfield Chicken recipe and some of the best brain-boosting foods to add to our diets.

Before our brain nutrient rich dinner began, Alton and I sat to discuss his new partnership with Neuriva, and what it meant to him to be a part of the mission to fuel the 7 major indicators of brain health.

Danielle Niecey, The Knockturnal: What does Brain Health mean to you and how did you come to partner with Neuriva?

Chef Alton Brown: Brain health means to me, ‘being able to continue working; working better; working more efficiently and working more creatively,” more so now that I moved into my 60’s’. I started thinking, especially since I’ve worked so much in nutrition, and coming to a full understanding of what food does to the body, I realized that I’d never done anything for my brain besides feed it alcohol on a regular basis. And it’s [my brain] has held me up thus far, so I thought, maybe it’s time that I ask my brain what it wants.

I delved into research, because that’s the thing I do, and I began reading a lot of purity papers and learning how to say words with 10 syllables, [laughing], so by the time Neuriva knocked on the door and said, “Hi!” I could say back to them, “Hey, I know what’s in there [referring to the Neuriva’s Brain Health Dietary Supplements], because I’d seen the same ingredients in the papers.” So I was able to get with their science officers, and quickly move through large amounts of technical research and white papers, and all of their compiled research. I realized, almost immediately, ‘Neuriva, you’ve done your due diligence’.

There were two supplemental substances that I wanted for my brain. The first, Neurofactor, Coffea Arcabica coffee cherries, not from the seed, but from the fruit. It is a highly tested and well documented activator for making mental synapsis and aiding the traffic flow of the brain, so that it works well. And the other one is, Plant Sourced PS (Phosphatidylserine, which used to be taken out of pig brains)…it’s kind of a bummer, from their brains to our brains. Its different now, it’s plant-based now. But it helps to maintain and rebuild cell membranes; especially the ones in the brain. I told them, I want that [the Neuriva supplement],  and that was the Original Neuriva Formula that had that. Then they added Neuriva Plus, with an addition of vitamin B6 and B12, supporting 6 functions that indicate brain health; and now, more recently, the launch of Neuriva Ultra, which fuels the 7 indicators of brain  health that include: memory, learning, focus, reasoning, accuracy, concentration and has a new clinically tested ingredient, CogniviveTM, which helps support mental alertness from just one daily serving!

Danielle Niecey, The Knockturnal:  That’s incredible! I am so excited to try these supplements for myself. What tips can you share with The Knockturnal readers on how to incorporate brain-boosting ingredients into everyday meals?

Chef Alton Brown: Welp, our first line of defense is our food. There’s no way around it, our medicine is our food. So first thing, we’ve got to lay off the crap. Can you occasionally have some potato chips? Of course you can! But, you cannot live off of them. I mean you can, but not well, and likely, not very long.

Chef Alton expounded on the The MIND diet (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay), created in 2015,  that combines the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet to create a dietary pattern, focusing specifically on brain health. The MIND Diet emphasizes increased consumption of fruit and green leafy vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, nuts, poultry and fish and reduced intakes of fats.

Chef Alton, continuing, states: The diet recommends more consumption of dark fruits, especially blueberries; olive oil was noted to be amazing for the brain; green leafy vegetables, the darker, the better; and this diet actually puts chicken over fish…

Danielle Niecey, THE KNOCKTURNAL: That’s surprising!  Fish is always praised as the ‘king’ of proteins because of the omega-3’s and its brain boosting compounds.

Chef Alton Brown: Yes, extremely surprising!  But Chicken contains choline, a chemical substance that we do not make ourselves but it sustains our brain structure and function. These nutrients are crucial for memory retention, cognitive function, and mood regulation. Above all else, eat real, whole foods; if it has a  strong color, eat that; oh, and take a shot of olive every day, it’s good for you!

Danielle Niecey, The KNOCKTURNAL:  How can our readers join the Neuriva’s 30-day Brain Health Challenge to redefine their cognitive potential?

Chef Alton Brown: Oh, It’s super easy. It’s actually an app with super addictive games that are a lot of fun! You can download it on the App store or Google Play and the games track your progress.

Danielle Niecey, THE KNOCKTURNAL:  Last question, what are some brain-friendly ingredients that make up your favorite brain healthy recipes?

Chef Alton Brown: Well tonight, the main course we’ll be having  is one of my recipes, the Butterfield Roasted Chicken. Its a butterflied chicken, slow roasted and served with sesame glazed greens. That’s an example of finding fun ways to feed my brain; I’m not going to eat something that tastes like crap, just because it’s good for my brain and that’s what my brain wants. I like dark leafy greens, but I don’t want to sit down and eat a bowl of just kale. I just don’t. But I’ll eat kale with some sauteed quinoa with some other type of grain. So, I’ll usually take the things I am not crazy about and marry it to the thing I am crazy about. Then I can get what I like, with what I need. Because, hey life’s short!

The cuisine starters, compliments of Hearth Restaurant, consisted of slices of whole grain french bread with a cold-pressed olive oil dipping. Bread, and the pastas served, both carbohydrates, have been proven to increase serotonin levels which contribute to feeling happier; a great boost for our dopamine addicted culture. The olive oil, on the other hand, contains oleic acid, a compound that protects the brain, improves memory and reduces Alzheimer’s biomarkers.

Presented next was, Ribollita, a hearty and savory Italian soup, consisting of a tuscan bean and vegetable soup with breadcrumbs and thyme further complimented the bread and oil pairing. Encouraging us to take the in the scent of the aromatic dishes before indulging, Chef Alton Brown drew our focus to the brain boosting luteolin, found in the thyme, carrots and celery, all  ingredients in the Ribollita soup, that benefit cognitive abilities, aiding in memory. Next on the list, the Pizzocheri pasta, mushrooms (a nerve boosting food), cabbage (a vegetable that aids in the proper functioning and conditioning of the brain, nervous system, and endocrine system), and a light dusting of fontina (a cheese rich in calcium, zinc, and vitamin B-12 that stimulates brain function).

The main dish consisted of Alton Brown’s Butterfield Chicken with Aleppo and Za’atar and lemon sesame glazed-greens. Chicken, Alton’s favorite protein, has also been known to be one of the best proteins for the brain, along with fish and beans. Chicken, he states, has been known to support healthy brain function and development; it also includes choline and vitamin B12, a key ingredient found in the Neuriva  and is packed with nutrients that are crucial for memory retention, cognitive function, and mood regulation. The savory dinner came to a close with a dessert of Tangerine Almond Cake, dressed with kumquats, whipped creme fraiche. Besides being absolutely satisfying, the health benefits pack a punch as Almonds, the main ingredient in the cake, contains L-carnitine and riboflavin that helps in the growth of brain cells; and kumquats which are high in vitamin C and aid in overall brain health. The meal was paired with dark red and white wines, Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi, brunori “san nicolo,” 2022, Marche, Italy; and Etna Rosso, villagrande, 2021, Sicily, Italy. Resveratrol, found in wine, increases the level of serotonin in the brain, which might help reduce the symptoms of depression. Other compounds contained in wine may regulate serotonin transmission within the brain, a mechanism that tends to malfunction in cases of mood disorders.

After the end of our informative and delightful meal, guest were given gift bags containing a stress brain ball, a complimentary supply of Neuriva PLUS Dietary Supplements, a Star Puzzle – a Wooden Puzzle Brain Teaser from Kiyuba Games and the Author of the New York best-selling GOOD EATS Series, Alton Brown’s, “GOOD EATS 4” the fourth Good Eats cookbook installment in his series, compliments of  Neuriva and Chef Alton Brown.

ALBUM REVIEW: PRICE Releases New Album, ‘C.I.T.Y. (Caught In The Youth)’

by Danielle Niecey February 1, 2024
written by Danielle Niecey

January 31, 2024. Manhattan, New York. —I came to the knowledge of PRICE on Wednesday, January 24th, 2024 at The CABIN NYC, Manhattan New York where he hosted his exclusive listening session. The Cabin, a quaint venue, opened their doors and greeted myself and several media personalities to a low lit and intimate setting. The Cabin, a cozy eatery with wood paneled walls, infinity mirrors reflecting birch trees, and leather banquettes lining the perimeter of the restaurant greeted us with two warm host, h’oeuvres and beverages as we waited in anticipation for the man of the hour. An ambiance of familiarity set the tone for the private listening session for ‘C.I.T.Y. (Caught In The Youth)’, a new album that released on Friday, January 26th, by multi-hyphenate producer, songwriter, rapper and Rapreneur, PRICE.

‘C.I.T.Y.’ comes as a follow up project from PRICE’s introductory projects, ‘CLRD’ & ‘FOES’, both garnering over a million streams with high probability that ‘C.I.T.Y.’ will surpass both installments in his discography. PRICE offered a live performance that was personable and impressive and encouraged us to listen to the project in its entirety upon release; and what we didn’t realize we’d be experiencing is PRICE’s vulnerability and true expression through his healing and processing from the loss of his cousin while aligning himself to be a community and familial healer.

For those new to PRICE as a talent, the prolific songwriter hails from Inland Empire, CA and has paid his dues in the industry, notably recognized as a gifted Lyricist, Songwriter, Producer and Programmer whose penned hit songs for artists such as Travis Scott, Brandy Norwood and more.  PRICE has co-written songs with legendary talents that include but are not limited to, Jill Scott, Mariah Carey, Wyclef Jean, Kanye West, Hit Boy, TI, Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla $ign, H.E.R., Lucky Daye, Wale, Rick Ross and many more. Encompassing ranges of sounds and influences that he’s acquired through collaborating and producing for other artists, PRICE also infuses technical prowess and versatility of style in his delivery and vocal arrangements.

‘C.I.T.Y. (Caught In The Youth)’, serves as an ode to PRICE’s late cousin, affectionately known to his peers and colleagues as, ‘BIG CITY’. The album hits his listeners with 12 tracks (37 minutes, 23 seconds) of what sounds like the Holistic side of Hip Hop. With sacred chants and ancestral offerings in sound, the word “Asé” echoes behind the narratives presented  in spoken word and compliment the transition of each song. The album also serves as a reminder to leave the past behind, let tomorrow take care of tomorrow, and enjoy the present. With strong themes of community, family, love⸺fraternal, romantic, platonic and regional, C.I.T.Y. is raw and unfiltered peering into the mind, life, trials, and triumphs of PRICE. PRICE self produced a large portion of the album except for a few clever assists from PRICE’s longtime friend and GRAMMY award-winning producer, Hit Boy on ‘PROUD’, as well as four tracks from two-time GRAMMY nominated R&B record producer, Darhyl Camper. The project also includes features from  T-Pain, Alex Vaughn, and Tish Hyman.

On the opening track, ‘CAUGHT IN THE YOUTH’, PRICE offers an array of transitions in delivery and sound, both with an empowered focus to become a “generational cure” aiming to heal the legacy of brokenness, pain, incarceration and drama that tends to follow black men and the members of the black community. “I refuse to get caught in the youth,” he repeats on the hook of the song, sweeping his listeners in with its catchy appeal; knowing that becoming a statistic of crime, violence or death would not be the legacy he plans to leave behind and that can be avoided with better choices.

“They thought I’d be dead by 25…Jokes on you, I’ve got Angels by my side/ Brown skin with a heart full of pride, Mansa Musa, I feel like the richest man alive…” on MANSA MUSA (featuring T-PAIN), PRICE offers an empowered swagger on the bouncy-track with head nodding rhythms. Malaya, the daughter of the late beloved, follows up as the song fades out, declaring her faith in her new ancestor, and that her father is ever present with her in this waking life. Throughout the progression of the album, PRICE takes us through his internal landscape by way of song, each track like a piece of patchwork of expression that allows us to witness how the loss of his cousin impacted his outlook on life, to his newfound spirit of gratitude and fortitude and how it simultaneously holds him together.“I Rejoice, I rejoice; some might say I’m cool, some say I’m crazy, I’m just trying to flow like God made me…crown myself, finally found my voice…” , on ‘REJOICE’, the liberated PRICE expresses that he intends to have a life full of wonderful things because he intends to focus on the positives in life, all while accepting himself and life for what it is and all it brings.

On ‘SAGGIN AND BRAGGIN’, the artist comes in embracing purpose as well as setting his boundaries as he actively seeks to draw peace into his life and claim all the blessings that he’s worked to earn for him and his loved ones. “Need a machete and a little headspace (For what?) /Just so I can cut off all the dead weight (cut em off). / I’m Rialto where they’re Toe Taggin’ (yeah)/Pants ain’t low when I tell you that I’m saggin’/ Walked in like hotshot/Ain’t no time for being humble…”; it’s evident that PRICE is on a mission to hold his head up high and walk confidently in this world, realizing and fulfilling his dreams every step of the way, while carrying his family legacy on his back. On ‘CUZO’, a playful and lighthearted ode, PRICE pays homage to his existing cousins that relate to him like brothers and sisters, shouting out all the amazing things each one has influenced  and brought to his life.

The song that tugs viciously at the audience’s heart strings is ‘PROTECTED 2’. This song illustrates the vulnerability and fears of a black man as he struggles to navigate this world in which he lives. PRICE makes a heartfelt plea in his song as he repeats, “..so yes its true, we need black men to be protected too…just let my message through…born in a system built to pressure you…so yes its true, we need black men to be protected too…//

Black men step out side but coming home never’s been promised…the ones that said we all equal have never been honest….they took our male ancestors/put their hands behind their backs and made them watch them rape our women, real mental attacks…” this beautiful musical installment shines a light on the concerns, historical and present day, that anyone who’s ever loved, cared for, or adored a man of color, feels; from the desire to protect them from external harm and fear to the yearning to bring them peace of mind in all things. In ‘PROTECTED 2′, PRICE becomes a voice for men who want to cry out and say, “we matter and we need to be shielded too”, it serves as a reflective piece, a call to action and a somber question , “How will you, the listener, protect black men?” in day to day life.

As the project nears its ending, BIG CITY’s son, Marlon, reflects on the loss of his father through his grief stating that he wishes God took other things from him instead, like “his bike, his Xbox, Supreme hoodie, or even his basketball court …but not his dad”. Songs like ‘REPO MAN’, shows PRICE lamenting, displaying his sadness and disappointments from his loss of family and friends. Though heavy ladened with harps and lyrical punchlines, he is skilled enough to neutralize the weightiness of this theme with catchy hooks on genre-bending instrumentation and arrangements in other follow up tracks like PROUD and BLESS. PRICE displays his skills by creating a formidable and cohesive sound, unique to his brand, and  universal in its appeal. The influences of sound found in this compilation range from gospel; to blends of Progressive Soul/R&B found on the endearing chart-topping single, ‘CREAM OF WHEAT’ featuring the soulful songstress, Alex Vaughn. “I don’t think you know just what you mean to me…I don’t think you know just what you mean to me…skin shea butter smooth you feel like cream to me…sweet as apple oatmeal, sweet as cream of wheat…” The love ballad, CREAM OF WHEAT, offers a tender landing place for PRICE and his listeners who know love is what we need to heal and navigate in a world that takes much from us on a daily basis. ‘HARDT ST’ is another sensual song that appeals to PRICE’s love for his object of affection, reflective and tender; PRICE declares his love and devotion to his beau, in promises that he has eyes for only her. What’s refreshing about these songs placements is that they are void of bashing his female counterpart, exhibiting his progressive stance and active approach to celebrating women in his life, community, and normalizing loving his woman, openly.

What’s ever present in this project as a whole is that it’s anchored and does not stray away from his authentic voice as an artist; and PRICE is skillful in his ability to keep his audience engaged in the continuity of his songs by way of talent, range and versatility.  PRICE does not allow his eclectic flare to interfere with the continuity of sound or messaging in his album. What I appreciate about PRICE’s expression on this project is that he’s woke, but not so far open that he isn’t relatable. I appreciate that he does not deny his humanity, his journey, his heartbreaks, losses, the career rejections, and his ambitions that powered him through to where he is today in his success.  What listeners will equally appreciate is that PRICE never veers off the course from reality, and he is still aware that he needs to move through this life with the self discipline, focus, leveling up and a healed community in mind. While it’s evident that PRICE’s passion is music, its also obvious that he is fueled by his childhood experiences, familial trauma, spirituality, and the desire to positively impact his hometown. He is clear in his intent, motivation and driven by his desire to be a generational cure for many.  Its just as PRICE offers on his song, ‘WRITEOUS’, “…no longer care to debate who Christ is/ I’m more concerned with bringing people to where the light is/ and making sure no more of my bros get indicted…”

PRICE aims to live better, be better and bring people to the light of truth and personal freedom. It’s safe to say he’s begun to shine his light through his new album, ‘C.I.T.Y’. I highly recommend this palpable and transparent body of work, as a new layer unfolds with each listen, and respectively, with every spin of every song,  it gives me comfort knowing that for Malaya, Marlon and PRICE’s sake, that BIG CITY can live and breathe through PRICE’s musical expression.

The Drake Hosts The Annual Holiday Party for Casita Maria Center in New York City

Wednesday, December 13, 2023. Park Avenue, New York, NY. — Jacqueline Weld Drake, the gracious hostess and Chairman of Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education, opened the doors to her home to host a phenomenal Annual Holiday Party for Casita Maria Center that included a live performance of Christmas caroling by the Casita Maria Choir.

Casita Maria Choir

The Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education, is the oldest Latin charity, thriving in New York City. Housed in an underserved and impoverished area in the South Bronx,  the organization provides quality arts education programs to more than 1,000 students each day. This impressive level of efficiency is what Casita Maria prides itself as they believe in fostering a safe space that serves as a warm and welcoming community of holistic engagement, uplifting the youth and their families in their offerings through teaching and volunteering.

Felix Urrutia, Tracey Fortson

The mission that Casita Maria focuses on is one of collaboration, coupled with empathy for the unique circumstances and hardships faced by each student-artist that attends their Center. Commitment as a team of professionals is a pact they make day to day, moment by moment as they seek to serve the intellectual, creative, physical, and emotional growth of the young student artists they serve without prejudice; their standard of excellence has championed them in the non-profit sector, 90 years in the making; a hard act to follow for any non-profit organization, but one that is not impossible for Casita Maria as they are being stewarded in by Executive Director, Felix Urrutia Jr through its next stages of development leading to their Centennial Anniversary in 2034. Last but not least, their ever-thriving desire to be innovative as they achieve their mission in partnership with loyal donors, the families that make up the community of the South Bronx, their dedicated administrative, educational team and staff, elected officials, community sponsors, partners, and the ever-growing support they garner as the awareness of their organization’s mission reaches the ears of caring adults who want to see the student artist thrive.

Luisa Lopez Celada, Alberto Mariaca

The night opened with guests that included notable figures in the arts, media, and entertainment fields, such as famed and brilliant Art Director, Luisa Lopez Celada, who developed corporate and brand concepts, advertising campaigns, promotional materials, and publication designs for a myriad of companies; Editor-In-Chief and Founder, Jonn Nubian,  of YRB Magazine, a lifestyle publication that focuses on fashion, music, art, and related cultural subjects; the intelligible and articulate CC Minton of The House Of Minton; Seven-time FiFi Award winner and internationally renowned packaging designer Marc Rosen and many more! The guests mingled and enjoyed tasty hors d’oeuvres, choice wines, beverages, and champagnes. Various media outlets and the honorary Casita Maria Community board members and supporters of the organization who have either participated in the offerings of Casita Maria, all held light conversation while indulging in fresh roasted turkey, peppercorn steak, and rye bread entrees.

I had the opportunity to speak with Gail Heidel, the Artistic Director at Casita Maria overseeing all performing and visual arts and arts education programs. For almost a decade, Gail has poured her heart and soul into seeking new opportunities for the students of the Casita Maria Center. With over twenty years of experience as an arts administrator, curator, educator, and visual artist, Gail gushes over the reality that she has found her “dream career”, serving others and one that allows her to remain in the space of creativity, to teach and to give back to the community. We spoke on the “South Bronx Culture Festival” an annual tradition for the organization that began in 2011, held in the first week of June, and celebrates the vibrant culture and communities of the South Bronx through an annual performance series anchored by a new theme each year. This year the free outdoor performances were held at Father Gigante Plaza and garnered in support from BronxNet Television, media partners of the Casita Maria.

One of the most impressive  things that I discovered while speaking to Gail about Casita Maria, is that there’s a holistic emphasis and approach the organization takes in introducing the student artists into each medium. Offering studies and concentrations in music, performing arts such as theater and dance; instrumentation like piano and violin,  as well as visual arts. It is refreshing to know that the engagement isn’t in place to pacify inner city youth; the staff and the programs built around the student-artist are about full engagement, and involvement, with consideration of their psychological and emotional development in mind. The organization also works in collaboration with volunteers and Teaching Artists, a comprehensive training and internship program comprised of artists, designed to prepare them for their fields through practicing their artistic crafts in the classroom. This level of consideration and mindfulness on the part of Casita Maria’s team and leadership is one to be ever admired and esteemed. These efforts are the cornerstone of what holds the borough of the Bronx, and the city together.  True to their statement, Casita Maria is where generations of local residents have found a home away from home—a place to gather, play, create, learn, and grow. It stands as a symbol of resilience, providing vital support in arts, education, and community and youth development.

These efforts are all aimed at producing well-rounded individuals who aspire to fulfill their dreams.

Casita Maria’s educational programs offer after-school and summer programming for up to 1,000 young people from kindergarten through high school. Programs are built on a Creative Youth Development framework that combines arts education with academic assistance and positive youth development principles to empower young people to reach their potential as artists, scholars, and leaders.

All programs are free and operate after school from 2:30 to 6 PM. Casita Maria, though known to have a higher attendance from Bronx residents, accepts participants on a first come-first served basis, regardless of need.

Friday, December 8th, 2023. SoHo, Manhattan New York— A festive time was had by all in attendance for The Six Bells Holiday Pop Up Shop in SOHO that opened its lavishly holly ornamented doors at 6:00 pm sharp to notable guest and influencers that included visits from notables Alejandra Alonso Rojas, Cami Tellez, Charly Sturm, Anna Speckhart, Jilly Hendrix, Lauren Servideo, Dee Poku, Alessandra Ford Balazs, Natasha Stagg, Courtney Halverson, Joana Avillez, Fletch Kasell, Tanner Richie, Sharina Gutierrez, Erica Cerulo, Gabriel Herd, Tara Thomas, Stephanie Covington, Woldy Reyes and many more!

The comfy holiday southern-themed event showcased antiques and home decor offered in its unique collection. Hosted by  its Founder, Audrey Gelman, who is also the former CEO of The Wing, a network of women’s spaces that scaled to over a dozen locations in the US + UK under three years and amassed a global following. Audrey has been named Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business, Fortune Magazine’s 40 Under 40, and Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30. Before founding The Wing, Gelman worked in politics and public affairs as a Senior Vice President at the political consulting firm SKD Knickerbocker, and as Deputy Communications Director to NYC Comptroller Scott M. Stringer. She began her career as an aide on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 Presidential Campaign. It is no wonder a woman with accomplishments of this magnitude garnered so much support around The Six Bells Pop Up Shop.

In its own right, The Six Bells Brand has since its inception,  left its mark for its remarkable collection of antique and custom made goods and homewares inspired by the English and American countryside. What you won’t find here are metals, such as silverware and cast irons, purposely so as the brand centers its focus on the subtle and exquisite components of southern fixtures and home accessories. The collections of  home decor echoes delicacy in its collection, from the glassware arranged in decorative fashion on the family length dinner  table; carefully sewn Echo bluff Cotton Matelasse coverlets, to the hand carved and embroidered egg shells; to the intricate placements of the aged candle holders, and bell ornamented woven wicker baskets. Each curated piece is well crafted and handmade with  the ease of southern living in mind. The Six Bells showcases and only sells merchandise created by small, independent brands and quilt makers in Alabama; gathering textiles from West Dorset to ceramics from the Sarthe Valley and antiques from road trips taken across the country.

The Six Bells Pop Up Show will only be in SoHo for two weeks, each night will showcase a unique event specialized to bring holiday cheer to the guests in attendance. Check out their website which includes exclusive private label finds to get dibs on the remarkable collection in its offering: www.TheSixBells.com

Old Overholt® unveils “Decade Aged” Cask Strength Kentucky Rye Whiskey for Tasting

by Danielle Niecey November 19, 2023
written by Danielle Niecey

Old Overholt hosts the unveiling of their special edition Extra Aged Cask Strength Rye Whiskey at Restaurant Marc Forgione, Manhattan, New York/D. Niecey, The Knockturnal

Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Restaurant Marc Forgione , Tribeca, Manhattan. — You wouldn’t believe this but, The Knockturnal was cordially invited to attend an exclusive Whiskey tasting event for the “Old Overholt® Extra Aged Cask Strength Kentucky Rye Dinner and Tasting” at Restaurant Marc Forgione in Tribeca.  How exciting that a ten year aged beverage, special edition at that, is ready to be unveiled; and trust me when I say, it is good to the last drop.

“A Sign OF The Times” A Vinetage Old Overholt bottle held in admiration at Restaurant Marc Forgione, Manhattan, New York/D. Niecey, The Knockturnal

The Whiskey Tasting and Dinner was centered around the grand introduction and celebration of Old Overholt’s unveiling their latest limited-edition offering: Old Overholt® Extra Aged Cask Strength Kentucky Rye, an all new, Ultra Premium asseveration of the oldest continually produced and maintained whiskey brand in America.  This is the first cask strength made readily available to the public from the Old Overholt brand since the mid 20th century.

What makes this unveiling so exciting is that the Old Overholt® Cask Strength Straight Rye was aged for 10 years in a single and unique escalator-style warehouse before being bottled cask strength and unfiltered. In other words, it was extremely potent, flavorful and robust in taste and scent. This special release provides rye whiskey enthusiasts and collectors the rare opportunity to experience Old Overholt’s distinct spice and depth in a more robust, cask strength expression. The release of this beverage, aged for 10 years, serves as a bold testament to the resilient spirit that has kept Overholt at  the Forefront of American Rye for over 200 years.

Before my very first Old Overholt® Whiskey tasting started, the evening opened with conversations  centered around the rye based beverage; lessons on the texture, tasting and wafting techniques to take in its aromatic scent, water droplet techniques that release the flavor, along with recommended food pairings with the high proof beverage. Guests enjoyed Appetizers of BBQ Baked oysters pancetta; chicory Salad of delicata squash, Goat cheese and maple vinaigrette; and Green Market Bounty, blended with ricotta Cavatelli all courtesy of the innovative, yet approachable contemporary New American cuisine offered at the Restaurant Marc Forgione’s. While indulging in a few delicacies, the guests sipped from the in-house designed cocktails,

Smoked Perfect Manhattan, a spin on the traditional ‘Manhattan’ which consisted of Old Overholt® Straight Rye Whiskey, Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth, Dolin Dry Vermouth, Angostura Bitters and Cedar Smoke; or The Bad Apple, a stout glass of Old Overholt’s® Bottle-In-Bond, Vecchio Amaro del Capo, Aperol Apple Tea, Lemon Juice and a fresh orange twist.

Savory Skewers from Restaurant Marc Forgione, Manhattan, New York. /D. Niecey, The Knockturnal

We took our seats, and we listened attentively as our gracious host and Old Overholt® Brand Ambassador, Tim Heuisler, who made us all feel at home (which was perfect because the entrees were served family style). Tim spoke of  the legacy, the pride and resilience of the Old Overholt® Extra Aged Cask Strength Rye; from its preparation of being barreled in the Winter and Autumn seasons of 2012 and laid down in one of the few remaining escalator warehouses in Clermont Kentucky, Warehouse V. We learned about this tried and true warehousing style that it was specifically revisited to age this small batch of barrels curated for this special release because of the warehouses’  incredible consistency in producing a gentle mellowing of the beverage.

In front of us sat three samples consumed from left to right: (1) Old Overholt® Straight Rye Whiskey, (2) Old Overholt® Bottled-In-Bond, and (3) Old Overholt® Extra Aged Cask Strength, the star of the whiskey tasting event.

Not to anyone’s surprise, the Extra Aged Cask Strength Whiskey left the other two samples in the dust in terms of flavor and strength. A long finish lingers in this Rye. Its sweet corn, black pepper and cinnamon toast spice along with vanilla blend trails behind each sip, and yet for two extreme textures and flavorings, it is as balanced as it is complex in its flavor; it’s strong and distinctive taste curated and complimented by light ripe cherries, green peppercorn and sweet caramel. The taste of the whiskey also presents in it, brown sugar and honey anchored in charred oak. The cask strength for this proof meets 121 and is not for the faint of heart. Once on the market, the limited edition Old Overholt® Extra Aged Cask Strength Rye Whisky will sell for $99.99/750 ml a bottle.

Chili Lobster, Texas Toast served Family Style at Restaurant Marc Forgione, Manhattan, New York/D. Niecey for The Knockturnal

Fresh buns, complements of Restaurant Marc Forgione, Manhattan, New York/D. Niecey, The Knockturnal

To complement the robustness of the three Old Overholt Whiskeys, guest enjoyed savory entrees that included Chili lobster, served alongside Texas Toast; Snowdance Farms Chicken (under brick),  Yukon Gold Potatoes, Broccoli Rabe with Pan drippings; Grass fed Cote de Boeuf (a corned beef and brussel kraut), accompanied with twice baked squash and Cauliflower steak with sauce proposal. The decadent dessert consisted of the infamous “Ten-Minute Chocolate Chip Cookies and Vanilla Anglaise”. As dinner came to a close, guests were presented free gift bags that included one complimentary special and special edition of the Old Overholt® Extra Aged Cask Strength Rye Whiskey of our very own.

As a newbie to the Whiskey tasting world, I can say I am a fan of this brand, and this special edition flavor piqued my interest in learning more about the whiskeys made in the USA, and the world. I highly recommend securing one of these Old Overholt® Whiskey Extra Aged Cask Strength Rye beverages and also checking out the amazing menu at Restaurant Marc Forgione’s located in Manhattan New York.

FILM REVIEW: “Bobi Wine: The People’s President”

by Danielle Niecey October 30, 2023
written by Danielle Niecey

Thursday, October 26th, 2023. The Neuehouse, Manhattan New York — National Geographic releases a new documentary, “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” filmed by Director, Moses Bwaoy.

The 121 minute (2 hours and 1 minute) documentary focuses on the trials and tribulations faced by the humanitarian, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known by his stage name Bobi Wine and his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi. The singer, actor, Ugandan politician and a former Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East constituency in Uganda’s Central Region survived seven assassination attempts on his life while he ran for the presidency. Bobi Wine also leads the National Unity Platform political party; a political and social liberation political party that is progressive in its mission, positioning itself as a social democratic organization, guided by the principles of servant leadership, equality, transparency, accountability, freedom, liberty and social justice for the citizens of Uganda. The screening for this film was held at the Neuehouse and Moderated by the eloquent filmmaker and Director Amir Bar-Lev (publication credits include: Newsweek, Rollingstone, Village Voice).

In June 2019,  Bobi Wine, a native of Uganda who grew up without his parents, in a more impoverished and harsh space of Uganda, announced his candidacy for the 2021 Ugandan presidential election; but not with little resistance faced by environmental factors, such as the COVID-19 Pandemic, placing a strain on the public gatherings of his supporter and with equal, if not more pushback from the Ugandan police, under the directive of president, Yoweri Museveni, who’s served the country of Uganda for over 30 years. Incumbent Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), took part in the 2021 election, garnering over 7 million signatures of votes to run for president from the people of Uganda, who also experienced hardships during the Museveni leadership.

Unfortunately, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), lost the race for presidency, according to official results, placing the incumbent, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, as the victor; although Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, along with several citizens, claims this result was fraudulent. Not only had the civil leader been beaten and hospitalized by the regime, but had lost many family members and friends who were beaten, killed or had gone missing due to their unyielding support of Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine).

This moving documentary has so much wrapped up in one film. What is most impressive is that first time filmmaker, Moses Bwayo, shot 5,000 hours of film and brilliantly condensed the most intricate footage into two hours. Bwayo highlights the love story of the charismatic couple that led Robert and Barbie together, and the strength of their union that helped them survive this trying and dangerous season of their lives. He captures the power of woman, Barbie Kyagulanyi, who remains poised, exhibiting grace under fire as she navigates her children and family through extended periods of time apart from her husband, Robert, the man we call Bobi Wine; Barbie, not knowing if her spouse was dead or alive. Bwayo captures the story of liberation, documenting the campaigns, the arrests and the volatility that surround Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) during his fervent run for office. With an unbiased eye, he captures the stories of heartbreak, brutal murders, hostility and literally blood in the streets of Uganda. With enthusiasm and belief in a greater mission, his film illustrates a story of hope, pulling the viewers in to chant for the success of Bobi Wine; albeit we are aware of the fate of this brave leader to take on such a powerful authority that is Museveni; and most importantly this film serves as an eye opener to the world that is blindly unaware of the suffering of the People of Uganda and other nations of the world, who face day-to-day tragedies, as they beg for and seek asylum and equal rights as human beings.

I highly recommend checking this documentary out; this film garners, for the respective countries, a new level of appreciation for the freedoms we are afforded in the United States of America and in other countries where citizens are allowed  to find better ways of living and even the freedom to gather in peaceful protests. “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” is available on the following platforms: Disney plus, FuboTV and will air worldwide on YoutubeTV, Nov 5th, 2023.
