Catherina Gioino

Catherina "Cat" Gioino is a native New Yorker, a huge movie buff and an amateur pizzaiolo. She currently works in transportation policy in New York, and previously was a breaking news reporter for the New York Daily News, and had stints at MSNBC, NY1, PBS and the Queens Gazette-- and was at The Knock since the beginning. When she's not biking around her hometown of Astoria or testing out the train system of another country, you can find her slinging wine and drinks at a friend's local bar.

Franz Ferdinand + Sparks Headline Terminal 5

by Catherina Gioino October 14, 2015
written by Catherina Gioino

In a collaboration between the two bands, Franz Ferdinand + Sparks blew up the stage at Terminal 5 on October 6, all in celebration of their tour after releasing their self-debuted album in June. After The Intelligencers opened for them, FFS took the stage by storm as they played songs from their album and shared anecdotes from their tour so far.

The band played a number of songs from their collaboration and separate albums, including “Police Encounters,” “Do You Want To,” and “Turn It Off.” Nearing the end of the show as “Number One Song in Heaven” was playing, Ron Mael of Sparks got up from playing the keyboard and started dancing around, garnering a bunch of laughs and cheers from the crowd. Following that, “Save Me From Myself” and “Things I Won’t Forget” also had the crowd in a dancing and cheering mood.

Crowd favorite “Take Me Out” was played soon after, much to the delight of the audience, and “Piss Off” brought the entire performance around just before a closing with the performance of “Collaborations Don’t Work.” The crowd went wild as the artists left the stage, after just being told by Franz Ferdinand lead singer Alex Kapranos that there aren’t two bands on stage, but rather one.

The show was laid back and super fun to attend. And as FFS continues their tour, we can’t wait to see what they do next.

Behind The Mask: Bamboozled In Focus Now Coming To BAM

by Catherina Gioino October 7, 2015
written by Catherina Gioino

Fifteen years after Spike Lee released Bamboozled, BAMcinematek will preset a nine-film reflection on his satire, running from October 28 to November 3. The films featured inspired Lee to make the film, as well movies that Lee himself inspired afterwards.

While it was originally met with controversy when it was released in 2000, BAM feels that now is an important time to show the film again to see how the image of African Americans in film and media has changed. The film starred Damon Wayans as Pierre Delacroix, a television executive down on his luck. He decides to pitch what he believes to be the worst television idea ever in the hopes that he will get fired, only to see the studio greenlight his idea and the show become a hit.

The reflection series will feature documentaries that offer views on how race is portrayed onscreen, and all of the films provide noteworthy opinions to the state of race affairs today. The films in the reflection series include: Ethnic Notions (1986), Color Adjustment (1992), A Face in the Crowd (1957), Network (1976), Dear White People (2014), Livin’ Large (1991), Free, White and 21 (1982), and Illusions (1982).

The series is curated by Facing Blackness: Media and Minstrelsy in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled author Ashley Clark.

written by Catherina Gioino

The latest show from the Roundabout Theatre Company will feature Keira Knightley, Gabriel Ebery, Judith Light, and Matt Ryan in the play adaptation of Emile Zola’s novel of the same name, Therese Raquin. Adapted for the theater by Helen Edmundson and directed by Evan Cabnet, the play will officially open on October 29 and will be on a limited engagement through January 3 at Studio 54.

While this is her Broadway debut, Knightley will play Therese, a young woman who is forced to stand by the side of her selfish husband, played by Ebert. Light will star as her mother in law, causing her a great ordeal of stress, all until she meets her husband’s childhood friend Laurent, played by Ryan.
