‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ Season Two: Bolder Than Before

by Britt Trachtenberg December 18, 2022
written by Britt Trachtenberg

Four fictional college first-years returned to the majestic Essex College campus. The new season of ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ showed more sexy scenes. The show dived into each characters’ social, academic, and financial plights. The show created a feminist, sex-positive college experience.

On November 14, HBO’s ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ aired season two. Written by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, the show gave a feminist spin to a college series. The four protagonists— Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney— became roommates. Each hailed from a different economic and cultural background. By season two, the roommates became supportive friends.

I loved Season Two for its representation, comedy, and empowerment. I liked Kimberly’s LGBTQIA+ allyship and secondary character Lila’s dry humor. I enjoyed Essex’s gorgeous greenery. I disliked Bella’s seeming disrespect for boundaries and her body. Read below to learn more about Season Two.

The Characters

Kimberly Finkle is a booksmart student from a small town. Her roommates helped her become less shy. I related to her introverted and hardworking nature. She had a work-study job at a campus coffee shop. In Season One, she cheated on a difficult final exam. As a result, she lost her scholarship. Season Two explored how she would pay for college

Bela Malhorta is an Indian-American student from New Jersey. She wanted to become a sex-positive feminist. She dreamed of comedy stardom. Season One detailed her negative experience at an established campus magazine. She decided to start her own feminist magazine. Season Two explored her new magazine’s trajectory and ego.

Leighton Murray hailed from an affluent, metropolitan family. Her parents both thrived at Essex College. Season One established her as a closeted lesbian. She succeeded in math and science classes. She came out to Kimberly, which created an unlikely, exciting friendship. Season Two explored her sex and academic lives.

Whitney Chase played soccer at the Division One college. Her mother became a high-profile senator. Season One established her as a sporty, chill student. She famously took introductory classes without knowing the subject. In Season Two, she challenged herself academically and declared an unlikely major.

Kimberly and Leighton

Kimberly’s plot arc became a season highlight. She dated a handsome transfer student named Jackson. The two started out as suite neighbors. Jackson and Kimberly attended study dates. He cares for her when she becomes ill. Season Two deepens her character via her thriving social life. Her character development inspires me to become more social.

Season Two builded Kimberly and Leighton’s unlikely friendship. Slowly, Leighton came out to friends and family. Kimberly supported her disclosure and romantic pursuits. The roommates accepted Leighton’s sexuality. During a family dinner, her father appreciated her honesty.

Kimberly represented good LGBTQIA+ allyship. She bought Leighton pride balloons, but she rejected the gift. At first, Leighton wished to keep her sexuality private. Hoping to not out Leighton, Kimberly returned the balloons. She did not tell her roommates. I appreciated Kimberly’s desire to learn and support her friend.

Whitney

In Season Two, Whitney made odd decisions that worked out for her. She suspected that her boyfriend, Canaan, cheated on her. She found evidence on his phone and confronted him. Canaan broke up with her at a party. He tells her that she has no future beyond soccer. Despite her romantic loss, a new opportunity approaches her.

Whitney and Bella took an introductory biochemistry class. Whitney’s mother suggested they drop the class. Determined to succeed, they stay enrolled in the class. Whitney found a newfound love for science. She declared a biochemistry major. Her academic side allowed for a more complex character.

Whitney became the second Black student enrolled in biochemistry. The TA confused her with the other Black girl. Whitney sought advice from her friends of color. She and the TA discussed the situation. This scene could empower other students of color in similar situations. The moment provides coping strategies and tangible solutions.

Bella

Surprisingly, Bella did not know what she wanted. Season One established her as an comical feminist who respects her body. Season Two spun Bela in a new direction. She betrayed her comedy magazine sisters. Then, characters critiqued her for not supporting other women. The different direction stifled her character development.

In Season One, Bella hooked up with various partners. She valued her body and boundaries above all else. Season Two presented her differently. She drove a comedian to Essex College. Meanwhile, she dated fellow student Eric. She slept with the entertainment personality to obtain an internship. This caused me to scream at my television. I understand that Bella desired the opportunity.

Season Two clearly defined Bella’s flaws. Eric broke up with Bella. She went to his apartment and hoped to win him back. He points out how she desired everyone’s approval. After receiving praise, she moved onto the next person. From Eric’s angle, Bella proves a flawed character with room to grow. Season Two simply showed necessary growth. In my ideal Season Three, she would gain positive character development.

Cole Hauser and Gil Birmingham Discuss ‘Yellowstone’ Season Five

by Britt Trachtenberg December 4, 2022
written by Britt Trachtenberg

Cole Hauser reveals that Rip and Beth will have more warm moments as a couple. Reporter Tracy Ferguson interviews two ‘Yellowstone’ cast members regarding the new season. Topics discussed include character arcs, indigenous representation, and Rip’s flashbacks. Hauser (‘Rip Wheeler’) entices viewers with brief answers. Gil Burmingham (‘Thomas Rainwater’) touches on his responsibility in representing various indigenous populations. Check out the interview for Season Five hints.

On November 12, Season Five premiered on Paramount Network and Paramount+. Paramount’s drama series ‘Yellowstone’ (2018-) depicts the sixth-generation Texas ranch owner John Dutton. He owns the largest ranch in the U.S. Dutton navigates a corrupt world of unsolved murders, competing oil companies, and massive lumber corporations. The show engages in cultural commentary via an indigenous tribe’s presence. As national parks open, Dutton hopes to keep his families’ legacy alive.

In Yellowstone, a lasting legacy becomes a huge concept. Both actors note the show’s writing and lasting impact on viewers. Hauser appreciates how flashbacks add depth to his character. He does not mention what plot role flashbacks will play in Season Five. As a viewer, Ferguson agrees regarding the flashback motif. Burmingham points out the realistic portrayal of indigenous people. He praises the show’s ability to increase indigenous people’s visibilities.

Highlights 2022 Gotham Awards Presented by Blue Moon Beer

by Britt Trachtenberg November 30, 2022
written by Britt Trachtenberg

Executive director of Gotham Jeffery Sharp stands before a golden backdrop. The word ‘award’ sits in big block letters behind him. He expresses gratitude towards Gotham’s and independent artists’ accomplishments. He thanks celebrities in attendance, like Adam Sandler and Gina Prince-Bythewood. He welcomes editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair Radhika Jones to present the first Gotham Award.

The Gotham Film and Media Institute provides important access, resources, and recognition for students and creators. Gotham hopes to elevate untold cultural stories across TV, film, and audio. The Gotham Awards annually showcase the best in independent film entertainment. For 2022, Vanity Fair served as premiere sponsor. Greenslate served as a platinum sponsor. Other sponsors included JetBlue, Justin Wines, Cadillac and Fiji Water. Companies in the tribute circle included Netflix, Apple TV+, Audible, and Universal.

The Knockturnal had the pleasure of sitting at Blue Moon beer’s table. Attendees at the gala enjoyed Blue Moon’s all night. We were especially honored to be sitting with legendary actor Brian d’Arcy James, who was Blue Moon’s VIP guest. Brian was there celebrating The Cathedral that was nominated for Best Picture as a guest of Blue Moon beer. It was surreal to be back there as last time he was there was when he won the Ensemble award for the feature film Spotlight as part of the cast. He was also on a huge high as just last week he was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in the category of Best Supporting Performance, his first individual nod as actor in a film and those awards will be given out in March of next year. You can see him for six more weeks starting in Into The Woods on Broadway!

Celebrity guests including Adam Scott, Brendan Fraser, and Gabrielle Union. Joel Kim Booster, Bryan Tyree Henry, and Janelle James attended. Blue Moon’s backstage winners’ room features winners, honorees, and guests. Solvan “Slick’ Naim, Mo Amer, and Ramy Youssef (from Ramy) toasted to their success. Daniel Scheinart, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jonathan Wang, and Daniel Wang (from Everything, Everywhere All at Once) celebrated their win. Honoree Adam Sandler partied as well.

Jennifer Lawerence presents the Best Feature award to Everything, Everywhere All At Once. She notes how independent film creates “intimate stories that demand we pay attention.” The creative team thanks A24 and producers for the technicality behind the movie. He says, “Behind all the glitz and glamor, there is a desk and a person.” Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert receive praise for their film.

Adam Sandler accepts the Performer Tribute award. His teenage daughters allegedly wrote his speech. Sanders explains his reason: “I said ‘Daddy’s tired.’” A hilarious, crowd-rousing speech ensues. His daughters describe what they think of Sandler: “a 56-year-old uncut gem” with “an iconic Southern accent.” Sandler smiles wide at the adjectives. His daughters thank Gotham for selecting Sandler.

Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Furgeson presents the Ensemble Tribute to ‘Fire Island.’ He discusses the real Fire Island as an LGBTQIA+ pride. He says, “It’s the gayest, sexiest, most fun summer party.” Tyler notes that Pride and Prejudice inspired the screenplay. Upon accepting the award, the cast applauds director Andrew Ahn. The cast says, “We could not have been The Ensemble that we were without him.”

CODA Actress Emilia Jones presents the Best Supporting Performance award to Ke Huy Quan. Jones notes the importance of strong characters in film. She says they allow us to “invest in their relationships, the people around them.” In his acceptance speech, Quan notes his love for Adam Sandler. Additionally, he references his career’s progress. Quan says, “This time last year all I was hoping for was just a job.” He thanks Gotham for the award.

Jonathan Majors and Derik Murphy present the Icon Tribute for Sidney Poitier. Poitier’s daughters— Anika, Pamela, and Sherri— accepted the award on his behalf. Majors and Murphy discuss the origin of the Icon Tribute: to call attention to minority filmmakers’ works. The speakers say Poitier’s “work and activism changed the way we see movies and the way we see ourselves.” Majors shares a personal letter he wrote to Poitier early in 2022. Poitier’s daughters spoke about his passion for independent film.

The breakthrough performer category featured international actors, gritty dramas, and cultural commentary. Winner  Gracija Filipovic the influence of American entertainment in Croatia. She remembers wandering through a Croatian theater and dreaming big. “I told myself I was going to come to New York.”  Filipovic credit to her film’s director. “She taught me everything I know about movies, art, and life.”

Audible.com founder Don Katz receives a tribute for his company’s success. Julianne Moore discusses Katz’ brief biography and business ventures. She says, “Audible’s mission was to celebrate words as performance art and take spoken word into the media.” In his speech, Katz describes his company’s unique audiobook creation process. He invites actors to record the book as a script. He notes the creative liberation of not needing special hair or makeup.

Winner of three 2021 Gotham Awards Maggie Gyllenhaal underlines a great screenplay’s importance. She asks the audience to applaud every screenplay nominee. “It’s really hard to write a script,” she says. Winner Todd Field opens his speech with the definition of ‘best.’ He says the word should have no meaning in creative contexts. “We pray for it so the things we made will be seen and heard.” He says that writing a screenplay involves a self-critical eye.

Film director of “Elvis,” Baz Luhrmann asks the audience to applaud Field’s sentiments again. Luhrmann notes the importance of award shows: “to remember what movies can do for us in a global interconnected society.” He presented the Best International Feature award to director Audrey Diwan. She thanks the film producer who fought against creative team layoffs.

Two-time Gotham Award winner Paul Dano highlights Michelle Williams’ accomplishments. He mentions Williams’ early success on ‘Dawson’s Creek.’ He credits her with roles in ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and independent film ‘The Station Agent.’ “I think there is the sense of bravery and searching that runs through Michelle William’s career.” In her speech, Williams wishes that Mary Beth Peil could attend the awards. She notes the early-career support from Peel.

Interview With ‘Reclaiming Turtle Island’ Director

by Britt Trachtenberg November 26, 2022
written by Britt Trachtenberg

Director Nzinga Blake calls the process structural and story-based. Blake collaborates with Black Eyed Peas’ Taboo on the documentary “Our America: Reclaiming Turtle Island.” Other collaborators include ABC Owned Television Studios, National Geographic, and various indigenous communities. The creators magnify indigenous activists’ environmental work. On November 25, 2022, the documentary will premiere across streaming services. Check out our interview with Nzinga Blake below.

The Knockturnal: How has working with Black Eyed Peas inspired you to make creative content?

Nzinga Blake: Taboo is highly creative and passionate, so it’s easy to be inspired by his creativity.  The concept for “Our America: Reclaiming Turtle Island” was sent to him, and it was surreal to get a personal call from him expressing his interest in being part of the special. Having him as a part of this project is very special to us all.

The Knockturnal: Have you collaborated on video projects before?

Nzinga Blake: No, this is our first project where we collaborated with each other (me and Taboo), but I hope it isn’t the last. We both really enjoy working together, and with both of us being part of the Disney family, we are definitely looking at exploring other synergy opportunities.

The Knockturnal: What challenges arose in the project’s development? How has the team overcome them?

Nzinga Blake: The music video process vs a documentary special production is very different because, with a music video, you have to conceptualize a story without using words. Yes, you have the song’s words, but the music video’s overall thematic focus must be conveyed through a visual story, which I find exciting because it’s challenging. With documentaries, there is more of a structured format that you can follow because of the interviews and interactions that are captured to help craft the overall story. Sometimes that’s not always the case, though; you can start with an initial concept, which can change while you are out on the road filming. However, with Our America: Reclaiming Turtle Island, we were able to capture everything we set out to do!

The Knockturnal: What challenges arose in the project’s development? How has the team overcome them?

Nzinga Blake: This project came together serendipitously.  It was a great example of the power of collaboration between ABC Owned Television Stations, National Geographic, and members of various Native American communities, specifically those featured in the special. The elements came together well, letting me know that we were supposed to do this work.  However, I would say that if I had a challenge, that was wanting to ensure we got it right.  We made sure to include people from the Native American community. I specifically have to thank our colleague Dawn Jackson, who is Native American and served as a consultant on the project.  This is part of our inclusive storytelling practice. We wanted to make sure we told these stories accurately, respectfully, and with authenticity, and I think we’ve done that.

The Knockturnal: What has become your favorite part of the documentary process?

Nzinga Blake: My favorite part of this process was having the opportunity to amplify indigenous voices of the powerful individuals highlighted in this program.  So often, their authentic story doesn’t get the visibility it deserves. I loved being able to create this platform for all of the people featured in the doc to tell their stories – I just added certain creative elements to it. It’s always refreshing to be in this position because I feel like there are times when people think Black storytellers can only tell Black stories – but we are human, so we can connect with all humans and tell stories that celebrate our common humanity.

The Knockturnal: What do you hope viewers will get from watching the documentary?

Nzinga Blake: With this film, I, along with ABC Owned Television Stations, aim to raise awareness and elevate the conversation around Native American sovereignty as we commemorate Native American Heritage Month this November. “Our America: Reclaiming Turtle Island” will also strive to inform and serve those underrepresented communities in the United States today by shining a light on voices and important work of the Indigenous activists featured in the documentary.  We hope everyone will tune in.  The documentary will be available on November 18 at ouramericaabc.com/reclaiming-turtle-island. The documentary special will debut beginning Nov. 19-20 on linear across eight ABC stations, its 24/7 streaming platforms, 32 connected TV apps across streaming platforms Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, and Roku, and available on Hulu November 25, Native American Heritage Day.
