The Journey of Female Entrepreneurship: Wingee Sampaio Discusses the 15 Years of the Cartier Women’s Initiative

by Benjamin Schmidt May 8, 2022
written by Benjamin Schmidt

On this Mother’s Day in the US, we recognize and celebrate the working mother: those women who transform their lives for their children, while still contributing to the work force. Of this group of hardworking individuals, female entrepreneurs face unique challenges in the workplace, sometimes dealing with fundamental issues that men may never encounter.

To this end, for the past 15 years Cartier has championed women entrepreneurs through their Women’s Initiative, an all-encompassing international entrepreneurship program that aims to drive change by empowering women impact entrepreneurs. The program is open to women-run and women-owned businesses from any country and sector that aim to have a strong and sustainable social or environmental impact. We joined Cartier in celebrating the 15th anniversary of the program earlier this year along with a celebration for International Women’s Day in Dubai.

Now, we share highlights from an interview with Wingee Sampaio, the director of the Cartier Women’s Initiative, who spoke on the evolution of the program, the unique challenges female entrepreneurs experience, and the triumphs she’s witnessed. Quotes were edited for clarity and brevity.

Female entrepreneurs encounter unique challenges in business

There are specific kinds of challenges. I think the most well known one is around funding. Women have a challenging time raising capital because there’s less women on the other side [as investors], so there some biases. Often it comes from the type of questions that they receive. So something, for example, when a male investor meets a fellow male, they’ll be like, ‘Oh, what is your business potential? What is the growth, etcetera?’ Very focused on growth.

But when it’s a woman, the questions are, ‘What are the risks that you see? how are you addressing all these risks?’ Then at the end they’re like, ‘Wow, she’s full of risk and I’m not so sure.’ It’s a good investment, but, this is the nature. Growth-orientated versus risk-adverse type of questions for women entrepreneurs.

But it’s not much of it, I would say is necessarily intentional. It may just be a bit of an unconscious bias amongst investors. And of course now with the research being published, there’s greater awareness around this challenge.

This is one of the reason why our program exists. We are specifically focused on impact entrepreneurs because we believe business is an important force for good. And we’re specifically focused on the woman doing this work because despite the fact that they’re creating businesses that the world needs, they’re facing more barriers than normal to solve for these challenges.

Female Entrepreneurs feel pressured to shift their personality to satisfy perceptions of entrepreneurs

We posed a question about the behaviors that Wingee has encountered in her coaching and mentorship experience, having worked with hundreds of women through her career and the Initiative.

The most common thing I see is a little bit holding back in personality. Sometimes they feel like they have to sound a certain way in order for them to be heard and that there is a certain way to pitch. So sometimes they deviate from what their true expression is. We want women impact entrepreneurs to hold true to what their purpose is. They’re building a business around that and they want the business to resonate with investors.

So in terms of coaching, it’s more about this: how do you self-reflect and be more self-aware? How do you be more comfortable actually with what you are working on. For the woman impact entrepreneur, we try to create a sense of belonging and a sense of community so that they can feel like other fellows in our program.

Affirmations can offer validation and a gentle challenge

When asked about what lessons Wingee has learned from leading the Cartier Women’s Initiative, she had this to say:

I’m actually on a very similar boat as many of our women entrepreneurs in the sense that we are all women change makers. We see something in the world that we would like to do something about and we are trying our best to create that change. Holding onto the purpose, being a firm and confident that what you’re doing is needed is a constant challenges.

The pandemic has disproportionally impacted women and minorities. That said, if ever there was a moment to witness the resilience of a woman leader, the current times have really reinforced the importance of our work.

For me, I try to have an affirmation of why I do what I do. Reminding myself of my north star so that you can do your best work. I intentionally make time for that.

The Cartier Women’s Initiative has evolved from a single event to an ongoing story of award, fellowship, community, and thought leadership

The program’s awarding of grants has been steady, but now the Initiative works closely with the entrepreneurs and expert third parties to synthesize the economics of the entrepreneurial work, allowing for closer and more accurate alignment from the perspective of story, business stage, and market potential, ultimately setting these entrepreneurs up for success.

We’ve been around for 15 years which is a tremendous testament in terms of commitment by Cartier. For the first 10 years we were more of an award; a single event. It was an event to recognize and these incredible women entrepreneurs.

But fortunately, five years ago, we had the commitment of Cyrille to really grow this program and to do more work in this space. I felt that it was time to get the pieces in this place, so we grew from an award to the current four pillars of our work: award, fellowship, community, and thought leadership. So the next step was to figure out how to measure the impact of each of those so that we could continuously reflect and improve on that work.

In the beginning years, there was a Laureate and then there was the runner-up, and only the Laureate received the financial grant. When Cyrille joined, he changed it so there would be a financial grant, even for the second and third place. This was great because all of these women are doing incredible work. So then we had $100,000 grant for the Laureate, $30,000 grant for the two runner-ups.

Then in the last three years, we have been evolving our selection process, and now we engage with an impact investment firm that does the due diligence for us around each of the entrepreneurs. Our knowledge and our work with entrepreneurs is much closer than it has ever been. So as a result of that, we do know more in detail, the differences between their businesses. We wanted to increase our commitment to the space, and this is why for us we again changed the grants to $100,000. $60,000 and $30,000, and that’s how we will be going forward.

The Cartier Women’s Initiative differentiates between coaching and mentorship

Wingee proudly shares the difference between coaching and mentorship, and expresses that finding the perfect personality and skills match between the mentor or coach and mentee is critical for success.

For us, when we are talking about coaching, it is about executive leadership and it’s about fully expressing your intentionality. It’s much more of a leadership and mindset training, and we call that coaching. Coaching involves actually helping entrepreneurs reflect on how they could be more of what I’m trying to do myself. Almost holding you accountable.

Mentoring is actually professional experience. For example, say I lack expertise in medical device product development, or I lack expertise in growing my business from five people to 100 people. Mentoring is more of a transfer of professional experience; someone who has been there and done that and what you are trying to do from a practical sense.

One of my biggest challenges with initiative is actually finding the right supply of the contribution with the right demand from the fellow. We have been very fortunate to have such a large selection of people who are interested in mentoring and entrepreneurs who have a lot of need. It’s a game of matching.

You can learn more about the work of the Cartier Women’s Initiative here, and get the full details about this year’s Impact Award winners, nine former fellows who continue to succeed, here.

by Benjamin Schmidt May 5, 2022
written by Benjamin Schmidt

Let’s have fun with it. After finding success with CIROC, Sean “Diddy” Combs and beverage company Diageo have taken to a new territory, tequila. With an obsession for perfection, Combs immersed himself in the world of tequila, with its unique construction and properties, and learned about the craft, heritage, and future of tequila. After significant research, sampling and refinement, three tequilas were born: DeLeón Blanco, DeLeón Reposado, and DeLeón Añejo. For the spring and beyond, dive into three sophisticated spins on a standby: The Margarita.

Heather Thompson, David Yurman, Lynn Yaeger and many others support Museum of Art and Design’s MAD About Jewelry Benefit

by Benjamin Schmidt May 5, 2022
written by Benjamin Schmidt

Who knew A-Listers loved jewelry this much? From RHONY star Heather Thompson to designer David Yurman to models Carol Alt and Alex Lundqvist, supporters and enthusiasts of both the art of jewelry and the iconic Museum of Arts and Design in NYC came out in droves to an exclusive preview event last Tuesday, April 26, at the Museum of Arts and Design’s iconic Columbus Circle housing. The event served as a preview for a jewelry show featuring over 40 designers, as well as an opportunity to offer recognition to some of jewelry’s biggest talents and advocates. Other attendees included trustee Barbara Tober, artist Beau McCall, MAD jewelry curator Bryna Pomp, producer Peter Wright, and more.

The MAD About Jewelry Award recipients included iconic British fashion and textile designer, Dame Zandra Rhodes, and the organization Art Jewelry Forum, accepted by Board Chair Bonnie Levine.

Zandra Rhodes has singlehandedly changed the world’s relationship to jewelry and textile, having designed garments for Diana, Princess of Wales and numerous celebrities such as Freddie Mercury. Her creativity is of the most classic sort, unbound by medium or intent; a true focus on beauty and form. As for Art Jewelry Forum, it’s a story of commitment. Established in 1997 to promote critical attention to contemporary jewelry, Art Jewelry Forum has become the leading voice for art jewelry’s advancement, serving to establish and elevate jewelry’s place in the world of art.

A true delight was the opportunity to encounter 40 emerging and acclaimed international jewelry artists, where guests could browse and intimately encounter works that are redefining art jewelry. As the only museum in the U.S. to have a permanent gallery devoted to contemporary jewelry, proceeds from the event will support MAD’s educational programming and jewelry exhibitions.

A global inventory of artist’s work were on view and available for purchase, including Agneta Bugyte‘s smooth, beautifully finished silver and 18k gold works, Jenny Luckett‘s contemporary, ultra-durable jewelry, Suna Bonometti’s architectural forms, and Belle Brooke Barer‘s stunning demonstrations of sustainable jewelry, often created with recycled metals. Overall, the state of jewelry is very focused on genderless practicality and forward thinking application, verging on the territory of wearable sculpture. A focus on thoughtful sourcing, process and technique has captured this world.

HBO Hosts a Lavish NYC Dinner Celebrating Gentleman Jack Season 2

by Benjamin Schmidt May 4, 2022
written by Benjamin Schmidt

Last week, guests walked back in time with HBO’s Human By Orientation, who hosted a lavish uptown affair in an Upper East Side mansion that felt it could have belonged to Gentleman Jack‘s main character herself. Gentleman Jack, a queer period drama is now in its second season and is based on the collected dairies of Anne Lister. Those diaries contain over four million words and are written largely in secret code, documenting a lifetime of lesbian relationships maintained by Lister. The first season was celebrated for its exploration of the complex social landscape of the 19th century and the subtle wit and passion of Lister (expertly portrayed by Suranne Jones).

In our own way, guests were able to luxuriate in Lister’s atmosphere by way of the soirée in a hallowed home: the austere, dramatic Fabbri house, built in 1916. The property and building were bought and financed by Margaret Louis Vanderbilt Shepard as a wedding gift to her daughter, Edith Shepard Fabbri. It was said that dinners would not begin until after 1am and guests would stay weeks.

Today, we partake in a similar pleasure in the spare and delightfully cold Italian interior (already of antique demographic by 1916), warmed by candle sticks lining the walls and halls, a string quartet providing music through the evening, and even period-influenced dances by Cortney Key and Lenai Wilkerson. Cocktails were prepared in the spirit of the period on the mezzanine, served in glassware of a rare regal scale and quality, weighing more than 2 pounds each. In the courtyard, a Mercedes-Benz SL350 “Pagoda” sat, the car Ms. Lister would have been well-likely to drive if she had the choice. The grand library of the Fabbri house was converted into a screening area where guests watched the first episode of the new season of Gentleman Jack. The drawing room with its important and intricate ceiling (coming way of Italy by boat) was the site of a photo studio, complete with gorgeous floral arrangements by Nicole Absher framing a period sofa.

The beautiful florals continued into the dining room, where a U-shaped table was arranged at the foot of an imported mantle. Guests assembled for a multi-course meal prepared by celebrated chef Melissa King (Melissa was quite busy this week as she had the MET Gala dinner to serve yesterday as well). The menu, according to Melissa, was heavily influenced by the period (especially the pea soup, “Always the pea soup”). But Melissa also included a part of her own legacy, that of being a queer person with Cantonese heritage. “There are some Asian influences here, especially in the selection of ingredients”.

Hotel Review: The Dubai EDITION Hotel in Downtown Dubai (WITH PHOTOS)

by Benjamin Schmidt April 3, 2022
written by Benjamin Schmidt

The Dubai EDITION hotel is on a mission to counter every accusation posed against the vast metropolis that is Dubai, which happens to be the site of the first EDITION hotel in the region and major moment of growth for the brand.

It’s a tough task: from the moment one lands in Dubai, one is immediately interred into an atmosphere of visually and emotionally grand things. Soaring ceilings in the arrivals hall of DXB pair with acres of chrome columns and baggage carousels. A lavishness in the materials used around the city: copious amounts of chrome, glass, crystallize brick, even the roads gleam with a glossy concrete. On those roads, one will encounter billboards that are football fields-long, colorful posters, blinking signs, and of course, the countless towers that flirt with the sky. Most interiors are luxuriously furnished in the most traditional sense- golds, silvers, patterned carpets, plush furniture and heavy fabrics.

Motor Court of The Dubai EDITION Hotel

It’s exactly all of these things that make The Dubai EDITION hotel that much more successful in its mission. First, the building itself is a black and tinted glass monolith against the skyline of tan and glass. Arrival is an event- the motor court that fronts the hotel is always buzzing with guests and the valet is packed with Ferraris, Mercedes-Benzes, and Land Rovers. It’s leafy with green flora and fauna placing the atmosphere of this area closer to the jungle than the desert.

The Dubai EDITION Hotel Public Areas

Finally, the wonderful moment: once you cross the threshold into The Dubai EDITION, all of that Dubai melts away. Finally, there is nothing to look at. The smooth taupe walls climb to more than 30 feet. Burnished copper and brass replaces mirrored chrome. At all hours of the day, The Dubai EDITION is cool- dimly lit but by no measure dark. It’s refreshing. The lobby has two fixtures that draw the eye: a sculptural spiral staircase dress in white, and the simple barrel ceiling of the excellent Duomo restaurant.

Your eyes, thankfully, have a moment of rest at The Dubai EDITION and it’s the minimalism of this lobby that sets the tone for the rest of property.

The Dubai EDITION Hotel Guest Rooms

The guest rooms at the Dubai EDITION Hotel are civil spaces of relaxation, with technology and indulgence at the center of their constitutions. This technology starts at the door, where a doorbell and lights indicating “service” or “privacy” eliminate the need for door hangs. Lighting (always flattering) is synchronized and calibrated to atmospheres at the touch of a button: “daytime” offers full, bright light. “Evening” offers subdued comfort. “Night” offers just enough to avoid fumbling to the bathroom.

Enter the room and the first things one will notice is the volume and light of the space. The walls, like the lobby, are smooth, mildly polished stone or blonde wood.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony beckon you into the room and beyond to a view of either the Burj Khalifa or Dubai Creek. Ceilings climb to 14 feet, with blackout curtains and sheer curtains cascade down (operated by the touch of a button, of course).

Typical guest rooms feature a desk, coffee table, and a selection of comfortable seating in casual natural linen. Though I stayed in a standard room, suites feature an even larger balconies, living rooms, and more.

The bathroom at The Dubai EDITION Hotel. Photo: Benjamin Schmidt

The bathroom is a true escape (and, personally, the highlight of the stay), featuring a backlit mirror, separate toilet and shower room (featuring Le Labo amenities), and a deep-soaking tub positioned in front of a full height window, bringing the morning light (or nightly glisten of the city) into the space. This space is truly relaxing in every sense, with the smooth stone or wood touching ever surface.

The dressing hall opposite a bathroom features a myriad of closets and drawers, a minibar, a safe, and a Nespresso machine. The bed is low and sleek, anchored to a backlit headboard with reading lights and the full suite of lighting and curtain controls. Nightly turn-down service and full in-room dining service is available by a phone call. The mattress and linens were extremely comfortable (the bed is made up in the European manner with no top sheet but a luxurious duvet).

Each evening, I relished coming back to the room and drawing a bath or ordering room service for a late snack. The TV is fully featured with on-demand video and streaming services built in. Every room features a Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth speaker which I had playing relentlessly.

The Dubai EDITION Hotel Amenities

Located just off of the dynamic center that is Downtown Dubai, the location is a true treasure with simple access to the remarkable Dubai Mall, the selections of dining options along the road- from tea houses to hookah lounges-, as well as quick access to the other parts of Dubai by metro or car. Getting to the Marina, for example, is only 20 minutes, and DIFC and Business Bay are even closer.

But when it comes to dining or socializing, leaving The Dubai EDITION isn’t necessary. The theatrical Duomo is the most important restaurant in Dubai right now, with guests lingering into the late hours enjoying lush Italian flavors. The pool on the second floor offers a truly unique vantage point, where the Dubai Fountain, Burj Khalifa, and all the towers lay out before you. The 24-Hour Gym is a motivating setting with a massive range of equipment.

Finally, on the top floor, there is the urban meadow that is Jolie, complete with a retractable roof and a vast view over Dubai, featuring a vivid menu with global flavors. Jolie also provides room service to guests.

But if all of this is not enough, The Dubai EDITION hotel has a full concierge desk availing themselves to set reservations, secure tickets, arrange appointments, and more. And this was the final mark of the excellence The Dubai EDITION offers: exceptional service in a city that has completely re-written the rules on world-class hospitality.

The Dubai EDITION Hotel

The Dubai EDITION is located at the corner of Dubai Fountain Street and Burj Khalifa Boulevard in Downtown Dubai, UAE. Designed with LW Design Group, The Dubai EDITION hotel features 275 guestrooms and suites from AED 1100. Learn more and reserve accommodation here.
