Film Review: ‘From The Ashes’

by Bageot Dia June 24, 2017
written by Bageot Dia

Only From The Ashes do you unearth the complexities of a modern day tragedy.

And the documentary strives to ignite concern and action in the most engaging manner possible. From The Ashes strikes the eyes of the every day folk. Taking into account the influence from a Presidential administration drunk on the unscientific, the film showcases the story of the coal industry from a personal perspective. And it hits very close.

Ecologists and nature-lovers alike seek to end the cycle of perpetual suffering seen through the rising global temperatures, and their subsequent, immediate effects. However, American workers and coal-miners have joined together to tackle the emission orders put in place by President Obama, citing their livelihoods and their children and the future of their families as the principal reason for change.

Coal, the combustible and, until now, indefensible element of today’s world economy, isn’t just the primary source for climate change, but a paradox almost impossible to solve without one party losing the battle. The climate inferno will not cease any time soon.

From The Ashes, directed by Michael Bonfiglio, and produced by former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg and his philanthropy division, spends it’s 1 hour and 22 minute run-time in drill mode, quickly, yet with great detail, describing the statistics, the real-world accounts, and the finances involved behind the mammoth of coal. An excellent watch for those unaware of coal’s extensive influence, From The Ashes seeks to address both sides of the argument, but fully acknowledge the grim repercussions if no action is taken.

We’re given examples: polluted water, potent CO2 admissions in the air, the increase in deaths of Asthmatic children all around prominent urban locales. There’s more. Loads more. The doc revels in exposition, giving us the charts, the displays, and all accompanying peripherals. From The Ashes is sure to entice.

With it’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, the documentary will hit National Geographic on June 25th.

On The Scene: APOLLO Hosts 12th Annual Spring Gala

by Bageot Dia June 15, 2017
written by Bageot Dia

The carpet was red hot. The attendees were glowing. The APOLLO has seen it all.

The legendary theatre represents many. But above all, stands firm as a testament to the black narrative. The APOLLO only strives to give back. And the 12th Annual Spring Gala – its biggest fundraising event – is an example of just that, having raised over $2.2 million.

Who’s who in black entertainment made their appearance, with characters such as Ceelo Green, Stan Lathan and Savion Glover hitting the scene, the questions had to be asked.

What does it mean for you to support APOLLO?

Stan Lathan: It’s an honor to be here. I feel privileged to be here. We all get to be recognized out here.

Ray Crew
: Well, it actually continues. It’s a continuing part of the wonderful story and the legacy. The legacy continues. The great legend of the APOLLO and those that’ve graced the stage of it: Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and you know, what it means to be a person of that and add my name to this wonderful list. The years that I’ve spent here doing SHOWTIME at the APOLLO Amateur Night, and then with Steve Harvey, it’s actually coming back. It’s coming back. It’s gonna be primetime, so that’s gonna be a big deal.

Kamilah Forbes:
Well, it’s an honor to support. I think it’s a big part of my mission to continue to pull the torch, and moving it forward. And really about propelling the APOLLO into tomorrow, and that’s what I’m excited about. That’s what nights like this always remind us of: where we come from, and more importantly, where are we headed.

Wé McDonald:
I feel like supporting the Apollo is like supporting everybody. The support that they give is phenomenal. And I feel like that’s just something that’s really key in everyone’s eyes. I mean, without music and art, where would we be, you know what I mean? So I feel like, with them, their support is our support.

You excited about tonight?

Ray Crew(relative to primetime q): Oh yeah. Very excited. Primetime, FOX at eight o’clock, yeah. Before we wanted 1 in the morning, yeah.

Any particular fond memories related to the theatre or Harlem in general?

Kamilah Forbes:
You know, I did a couple of shows as theatre director, which was fantastic. I worked here at the APOLLO theatre as a producer of content about 14 years ago.

Anyone in the acting world or in your field that you look up to?

Stan Lathan: I love a lot of actors. And I’m a director. I work with a lot of actors. I’ve worked with people that blew my mind that you’ve never heard of, you know? I can’t say. Actors are like cards, you know? They’re all great. I don’t try to compare, because mainly with different people you get different things.

Wé McDonald:
Bruno Mars. His performance, and his charisma, and he can sing really amazing – it’s just endless. And he creates hits and he started as a producer, which is really just amazing.

Anything in literature that’s influenced you or your work?

Stan Lathan: No.

Ray Crew: Yeah, “Art of War”. That’s right. I read that because there’s a lot of life strategies and I refer to that a lot. You have to be ready to mentally and spiritually combat those forces. That’s what it’s all about.

It’s your favorite, then?

Ray Crew: It’s one of them. Listen, I study the Bible. I study many things.

How’s the weather?

Ray Crew: Today’s ridiculously hot. It’s been cool the week before, now we got this. I’m going inside where the air’s cool.

What is your criteria for judging a good film?

Stan Lathan: It’s intrinsic. It’s like I just try to feel with my emotions or how I’m affected by it, you know? So I don’t have criteria for judging films or any kind of movie, it’s just the way I feel, that’s it.

Ray Crew:
Well, I’ll tell you what, certainly with Stan Lathan, who is a friend of mine, and his body of work is great. So whenever I think of what’s a good film, well one is what kind of story are you telling. Because you have some films that are about all just action and the effects and all that, but I like a great story. And as it unfolds do I get involved with the characters? What’s the story? Does it mean something? Does it touch part of my soul? And Stan’s been able to tell some great stories.

Kamilah Forbes
: Judging a film? It’s always story. Always story. It starts, begins and ends with story.

Any film that embodies that? (Directed towards Forbes)

Kamilah Forbes: Moonlight. Story, character – that’s it.

Wé McDonald:
Honesty. Yeah, absolutely. Honestly in your creative vision; honesty in what goes on around the world, you know? I feel like the best actors are the people who are real. And I feel like the best films are the things that portray emotion without words, you know? Like you look at a style you can feel how something is great. Great actors, great directors, great producers – they all have that common theme. As far as creative things, I feel like a classic is like Titanic even though it’s corny, it’s still amazing  that something like that has lived up right now. And the things like Pulp Fiction, and then of course most of the Independent ones – it’s great.

Savion Glover:
I’m like, the worst critic ever. I like to learn. Once I go into the theatre, I go in with the preconceived notion of ‘teach me, teach me’. When I go into a theatre or movie and realize there’s nothing to be had here as far as education goes, I submit to the entertainment aspect. But I go in to learn something. Which has been a problem, actually, for me. I’m just becoming available, mentally, to go into a theatre and say “okay, I need to not be expecting an education here, it’s just entertainment. You’re gonna see Robocop or something like that,” but you know, that’s not a bad movie it’s just entertainment. Versus a movie of Spike Lee or something like that resorting to deliberate, educational proponents.

On The Scene: Stars In The Alley Celebrates Broadway’s Best

by Bageot Dia June 4, 2017
written by Bageot Dia

It was quite hot as far as viewership goes. But the temperature was up there too, we won’t deny.

Oh, and of course, stardom was on the rise. Shubert Alley had only brought out Broadway’s best. Produced by the Broadway League and hosted by United Airlines, came STARS IN THE ALLEY, a celebration of the 2016-2017 Broadway season, adding festivity to top the day in preparation for the 2017 Tony Awards.

Tituss Burgess of musical fame and known for his work on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt took the stage. And he played his part well. What followed was an example only Broadway could define. You had A Bronx Tale and Chicago and Cats and Kinky Boots. You watched intently for Aladdin, Groundhog Day The Musical, Wicked and The Phantom of the Opera, and you enjoyed it all.

The inevitable Tony Awards, the poster-child behind the event, would ring true in the hearts and minds of attendees: this was one function not to miss. It’s due to hit CBS on Sunday, June 11th.

But we digress. To the shock of no-one: there was a strong human factor behind the party. All as the culmination of theater fanatics and the mingling of voices married into wonderful cadence. Strong flavor. Strong voices. A perfect event to compliment the perfect day.

Strips of food and cocktail camaraderie amid a gorgeous display of the Lincoln Center Square helped ease the banality of the rainy outdoors. Quaint. Fulfilling. However, the festivities couldn’t mitigate the vestige of existential woe. For if one thing is certain in this life, it is that the universe can be so, utterly cruel.

Exclusive: Director Joshua Marston Talks New Film ‘Complete Unknown’

by Bageot Dia August 26, 2016
written by Bageot Dia

Confronted by a root to her past; following what comes next reveals her folly – and falling into the Complete Unknown is merely the start of it.

From the perspective of the lead characters, one could say that it’s quite a confusing tale. A woman who often dons a new persona – a manipulative guise so she can easily conform to new places and people – is suddenly recognized by an acquaintance from her past, and things slowly fall into place.

Joshua Marston’s new film, “Complete Unknown” hits theatres this Friday, but we’ve got a sneak peak into the mind of the director himself; of whom gladly partook in an interview with The Knockturnal.

The title really sticks out – tell us about it’s origins.

Marston: It was, you know, one of a thousand titles that we went through – trying to find the right one. Many felt, by the way, tied. And, you know, we wanted a title that had some association with the plot and when you watch the movie, kind of takes on a whole other level of meaning. And, you know, makes you think about different aspects of the movie. It references Bob Dylan; it references the unknown ability of Rachel Weisz’s character; it references the Complete Unknown. It’s a hard title to market. It’s a challenging part sometimes when people say “Josh, what’s your movie?” and I say “It’s Complete Unknown,” and they say “Your movie is a complete unknown? You don’t know your movie? The complete unknown? What do you mean?” Sometimes it’s a challenge.

How did you come up with the premise of the film?

Marston: The premise grew out of an interconnecting movie about a woman who is not who she presents herself of being. I’m not one for the idea that someone could just change their identity – I know they question even further by asking what would it be like to change your identity and create something new – and then after a while, finds that, for whatever reason, not satisfied, do you stick it out? Do you go back to who you were before? Or do you change again? And what would happen if you kept changing again, and again, and again. We were curious to explore that question – of what that would be like.

If I recall, New York is the setting of the film, right? Why was New York chosen specifically?

Marston: I mean, I chose New York mainly because that’s where I live. We very, functionally, made a movie that is – you know, a lot of locations that were in the neighborhood that I live in, so it was a world that I knew well. And, after having made movies in Colombia and Albania, I wished to make a movie in where I could walk to work.

Explain the chemistry between the lead actors. How did you develop them?

Marston: You know, they’re characters that are – you know – they have – it’s hard to say anything without giving away the movie, but they’re characters who have a past. Not necessarily about rekindling that past, but definitely about exploring that past and, you know, that feeling when you mean to catch up with someone from another time; someone who can ground you, orient you, and sort of, give you a glimpse into who you are.

Any particular scene you enjoyed filming?

Marston: I think the scene I enjoyed watching the most was the scene with Kathy Bates and Danny Glover. They were in a room with Michael Shannon and Rachel Weisz together. And they just – having four amazing actors at the top of their game in what is a very strange, and very subtle enjoyable scene. It was great just to watch each of them come up with stuff and play off one another. Every actor brings something to their interpretation of their character that enables the others to come up with something in turn. And that’s what good actors do. That was a pleasure.

As director, what is your vision for this film?

Marston: I would most like people to walk out of the movie and have a whole bunch of questions about identity; about how they live their lives; how it’s possible for Rachel Weisz’s character to do what she does; what it would be like to do that, and what that implies for their own lives. And whether or not it’s possible to make a change in your life. Or whether it would be possible to do something completely different.

Did you base the lead actress off someone in your own experience?

Marston: No, I can’t speak personally about someone whose done this. I mean, we’ve all met people that made a change – whether it’s to go off to college and you refashion yourself, or pick up a new wardrobe and don a new persona – I wanted to make a movie version of that.

How does it feel having your film hit the big screen?

Marston: The most enjoyable thing is standing in the back of the auditorium and seeing the audience react to the movie on the big screen. And seeing them talking among themselves about what’s come up.

Any future projects?

Marston: Yeah, I’m getting ready to make a movie called Come Sunday with Robert Redford and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Complete Unknown hits theatres on August 26th.

Album Review: Tim Young & The Questionaires

by Bageot Dia August 8, 2016
written by Bageot Dia

A whimsical play on sounds, one must admit; with formidable creative venture as different musical styles clash all across the spectrum. But the melodic wonder behind this piece doesn’t quite hit its mark.

Tim Young & The Questionnaires, from the beginning, realizes a somewhat harmonious romance as it tackles the audience with brevity – which produces a decent rise, however temporary. This is extremely noticeable within the first couple of tracks in the album – of which deliver with entertaining modesty, but the rest do little to court one’s full attention.

The debut Ten-song album has a strong emphasis on tone, hoping to succeed it’s audience with a myriad of euphonious and mellow-sounding pieces. Questionnaires has it’s origins in the life and times of Tim Young, a person whose musical expression landed him a solid position on as guitar chair in Reggie Watt’s band choir for The Late Late Show With James Corden. But that’s not all. Young cemented his musical career at the age of eleven; having practiced guitar for some time prior and, with that, ascended higher in the industry as he toured and recorded with groups such as: Zony Mash, Fiona Apple and Sweeter Than The Day. As an enthusiast of everything Jazz and music, Tim Young & The Questionnaires is a conglomeration of this learned musical talent.

The Questionnaires administered their debut album at the The Blue Whale Jazz Club in Los Angeles only a couple of days ago. With credits to the fantastic photographs by Jeffery Mayer.

LOS ANGELES, CA - AUGUST 01: Tim Young and The Questinonaires perform at the Tim Young & The Questionaires' Record Release Party at The Blue Whale Jazz Club on August 1, 2016 in Los Angeles, California.

Questionnaires definitely has some golden tracks; “Always On My Mind”, “Lento For Levon” and “Canticle” assailed an almost euphoric tenderness; reminiscent of times past, the present, the future – they have the mind travel in circles as you take solace in the musical genius – of which is most definitely potent in the chords. But, there were others: “Anouman” and “Adagio For Six”, which failed to captivate as strongly as the other tracks. The same wonder that could be found in some pieces was seemingly lost in others. A fundamental problem? Not necessarily so.

It’s not a rudimentary hiccup with the album itself, as Questionnaires certainly supersedes a fair amount of traditional, more “melodic”-advertised albums of it’s kind; with the desire to encompass a host of styles within it’s boundaries a strong one indeed; but, there’s a necessity to retain consistency of some kind. Some tracks simply lack the magic; the incredible and somber feeling professed earlier, as other pieces in the album do.

But this does not infringe wholly on the collection as a whole. Questionnaires expresses value in the little things – with its contents bearing a striking and essential message about the aggregate of life’s every-day problems. It whispers; let us take a step back and enjoy the day for what it is, friends.
