Applause fill the Django as Alex Borstein, the Emmy-winning star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Family Guy, steps onto the stage with a cheeky smile shouting “Yes! Look at me! Look at me!” Corsets and Clown Suits is Borestin’s newest hysterical brain child airing on Amazon Prime on April 18th. To celebrate its upcoming release, Borstein along with Eric Mills and Salva Rey put on a sidesplitting 30-minute set at the infamous jazz club.
The set was filled with one-of-a-kind song parodies that kept the audience bent over sideways. And it really was one-of-a-kind as Borestin explained these songs would not be included in the special, as they were unable to get the property rights to them. She then launched into a mash-up of Queen’s “Fat Bottom Girls” and Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back.” I’m baffled that neither of these artists signed off on the unique fat anthem, it was simply iconic.
The special is something of a one-woman that’s part comedy, part music, and all hilariously raunchy. Borestin described it to The Daily Beast as “a filthy TED Talk.” I’m going to go out on a limb here and say: Borestin seems like the type of person to tell it like it is because she does! Her performance at the Django was deeply funny and candid. In a world where everything feels like it’s falling about every other minute, it’s refreshing to see Borsetin dunk on the Texas judge that ruled to temporarily block the abortion pill mifepristone. Corsets and Clow Suits allow its audience to step out of this horribly chaotic world and into Borstein’s delightful chaotic mind for a bit of provocative fun.
