Former Vice-President Gore and prolific film producer Blum will both receive tributes from their respective industries at the award ceremony in November.
Gore will be honored with the Humanitarian Tribute, while Blum will bring home the Industry Tribute at the 2017 IFP Gotham Awards. The Gotham Awards is one of the world’s leading honors for independent film and media and each year recognizes selected film community icons.
Gore has worked tirelessly to bring attention to the climate crisis and has used film to reach a wider audience. His 2006 film An Inconvenient Truth won an Academy Award, while the sequel An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth To Power was just released this year.
“Mr. Gore’s urgent message on the dangers of climate change has been heard and seen around the globe, motivating individuals, communities, businesses, and world leaders to take action, reminding us of the power of cinema and its ability to affect change,” said Executive Director of IFP and the Made in NY Media Joana Vicente.
Blum, founder of Blumhouse Productions, is best known for producing low-budget horror movies and franchises such as Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Insidious, and Sinister. The Academy Award-nominee also produced critically-acclaimed movies and television shows such as Whiplash, The Normal Heart, and The Jinx.
“Jason Blum has shown the industry how creative and innovative models that support smart, original filmmakers- and produced with an economy of means –can be a potent force in connecting with audiences and achieving popular success,” Vicente said.
The award show will be take place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on November 27.
