Celebrating the publication of Cherry Bombe’s first fashion issue, founder Kerry Diamond had an in-depth conversation with designer and wellness guru Norma Kamali regarding all thing’s food and fashion.
Cherry Bombe is a women’s centric magazine with a focus on food and now fashion. Upon entering the Sunken Room on the sixth floor of Spring Studios each guest was treated to a drink provided by Glenlivet, as well as a copy of Cherry Bombe’s first-ever fashion issue. Inside there is a riveting interview with Norma Kamali, one of the most enduring names in fashion.
Kamali got her start in the 1960s before expanding her presence beyond fashion into health and wellness after the passing of her best friend due to HIV/AIDS. Expanding on the exposé, Diamond sat down with Norma to discuss how she got to where she is today.
“I looked in the Times and there was a job listing at Northwest Orient Airlines. This was in the 1960s. I traveled to London round trip for $29 every weekend for four years. When I was in London, I said this is my soul; this is who I am. I brought clothes back and opened a store for $289 a month, brought the clothes in sold them and I started to make clothes myself.”
The conversation then shifted to Kamali’s status as a female designer in an industry still dominated by men. When asked if she struggled sharing her story during the 1970s and 80’s Kamali responded, “I am personally a feminist, but throughout my entire career, I was never consciously thinking that I am a woman and most of my competitors were men. I just thought I was in the competition and that’s it.”
A Stiff Drink with Cherry Bombe presented by Glenlivet is part of IMG’s NYFW: The Shows The Talks, which features a series of in-depth conversations with designers and other industry leaders.
