We went backstage with Desigual to get the exclusive on the looks that hit the catwalk this season.
Thursday Morning we arrived to a snowed in Skylight Clarkson Square, but come rain or shine, or snow, fashion does not take the day off. Everyone was giddy, most likely grateful to have arrived by call time and the energy was electric. Brand Director Daniel Perez and latin pop star Prince Royce were backstage before the show began.
Desigual decided to go in different direction this season showcasing a darker pallet and more streamlined silhouettes. The hair was voluminous, textured and playful. The nails were simple, yet gritty with a textured grey/black roughness and the makeup was simple and fresh with a pop of red eye stain. We had a chance to talk to the lead artists and stylists about how this edgier theme influenced the makeup, hair and nails.

Inspiration behind today’s look:
Maud: The inspiration was this really cool, strong and dynamic woman who is very spontaneous and it’s almost like she prepped herself. It’s almost like a stain of paint on the eyes. The girls are extremely fresh with beautiful, natural skin with two paint stains on the eyes. We thought that was a cool statement to remind us of maybe the punk scene back in the day in the 80s, but we didn’t want to be that strong in terms of makeup look so I thought that was a nice alternative to fill this movement.
Can you talk about the cosmetics you used?
Yes, on the skin we used the Mineralized Charged Water Face and Body Lotion by MAC because we don’t want a heavy face. We wanted a fun and glowing sexy finishing. Then we used the Heart Rate Rising red mascara as the paint stain on the eyes and it’s a really cool because the fact that’s its a mascara means it drys really well. For the lips its Modern Midas just to give a luminescent look, it’s very translucent as well.
How did you choose the colors?
Well this is the new collection and I wanted to stay fresh and those two colors were the most natural.

Can you talk about today’s look?
Holly: The colors that we are using are a grey called “Kelly” and a black called “Willa” and we’re doing a dry brush technique which is you basically wipe the brush as many times as you can just get it really dry and you wanna get rough texture on the nails and then you just layer the grey and the black and it’s sort of supposed to be like if you took concrete and wiped it on your nails and we’re sealing it with a satin seal.
Where did the inspiration for the look come from?
Holly: The inspiration is from the concrete jungle and it’s really easy to do an because it’s using a negative space anybody can do this. Not too polished. Gritty but cool. It’s basically wearing the city on your nails, wearing the street.

There’s a sight notion of punkiness, but it’s all very individual, it’s a case by case study. Some hair that are way we’re making it more even, but overall it’s very textured hair. A little bit rough texture. There’s a sense of punkiness.
How does the hair compare to the collection? Is it also very punk?
Yeah there’s a little bit of that. You have a bit of British 70s, but very modern in silhouettes.
[slideshow]This collection was inspired by the all nighters, voguing, California punk and Spanish new wave fads of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The colors were dark, and I mean dark for any label, but especially for the usually vibrant design house Desigual. Dark denims, dark jackets in blue, black and grey consumed the cat walk. This season Desigual also incorporated neutrals such as tan and khaki. Even pops of color were darker hues, with saturated reds and crimson. This season the color red was a big trend for Desigual as well as flowers, knit and tartan. Notable attendees included Berta Vázquez, Nina Urgell, Snooki, Prince Royce, Eric West and many more.
