The “ghost hunter” show formula has been one that’s seen every possible extension and re-write under the sun, and with this new series WEtv seeks to take the genre into Compton, California.
For the screening, WE invited us to the well-themed McKittrick Hotel that hit the spooky vibe harder than the show itself that saw its greatest strength in its interpolation of reality-tv comedy. The dimly lit and dusty architecture set the mood perfectly for a show about the paranormal.
We were given a chance to watch the first two episodes and while only being a small glimpse at the show and its larger reach, it was rather good. The cast is, as the president and themselves would remark before and after the show, unusually diverse for a ghost hunting flick. It feels like WEtv is really riding on that factor, the chance to take a sub-genre such as ghost hunting, and market it to an entirely new demographic. The question of is this a resource heavy idea, or a spoof that will run out of steam remains to be answered by time.
