The 2017 Grammy Nominations Have Been Announced

The Recording Academy released its 2017 Grammy nominations earlier today, in advance of the February 12 awards show.

The 59th annual awards will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and broadcasted live on CBS. As if Beyoncé wasn’t having a stellar year (and life) already, the noms predict it’s going to be a strong Grammy season for her, with Lemonade scoring 9 nominations. The next most noms is, unsurprisingly, British pop powerhouse Adele. “Hello” is a contender for both Best Record and Best Song, while, 25 is up for album of the year. These two singers seem to have dominated the pop category for 2017, with surprisingly weak appearances from Rihanna and Ariana Grande. After much deliberation, Chance The Rapper’s Coloring Book became officially eligible to win a Grammy, and is leading the nomination for Best Rap Album.

Though much of the list was pretty par for the course, the Academy did throw a few ringers; such as emerging hip hop artists Anderson Paak and Gallant, both of whom won nominations for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Still, some obvious omissions include more of Rihanna’s ANTI, more of David Bowie’s Blackstar, and Leonard Cohen’s You Want It Darker. The Recording Academy might’ve also considered adding some female rockers, such as Angel Olsen and Mitski (both of whom had critically acclaimed albums out this year) to the long male-dominated Best Rock Album category. Without further adieu, here are the nominations.
