We stopped by the debut of artist in residence Domingo Zapata at Upstairs on Rivington, part of Hotel on Rivington in the Lower East Side.

The beautiful people certainly came out for Domingo Zapata’s Live installation at Upstairs on Rivington, the upstairs lobby lounge at the now-iconic Hotel on Rivington. Indeed, Domingo Zapata has a considerable following, models, other artists, even dignitaries and diplomats. Having a sculpture work at the UN and limited runs of modified Hermes Birkin bags on his resume, he can now mention gracing the Hotel on Rivington with his exciting and dynamic creations. His work covers the angular staircase that leads to the upstairs lobby lounge, where other works are on display amid chic sofas and chairs.

A bar in the corner was serving a selection of mixed drinks, including a ‘high voltage’ which incorporated a number of fabulous ingredients. The lobby continues towards the back, where a large conference table was found along with further seating. It was a chic and comfortable space and the work of Zapata certainly accents the space well. Zapata’s design is defined by a sense of something of a visual improvisation. Occasionally passing as an album art for a lost A Tribe Called Quest, Zapata has a handle on an offshoot of Basquiat freeform intellectualism. It’s art rooted in pop culture and reflection, but also timeless abstract expressionism. Tether it to the wall-as-canvas and the mixings of a high-art graffiti project comes to fruition. The crowd was calm and chic, in-the-know collectors, film makers and who regard Domingo as a genius and a friend.

We look forward to seeing what more comes from ART on Rivington, especially with them armed with Zapata as artist in residence. Be sure to stop by the exciting space and explore the works by a universally acclaimed artist as well as check out the rest of the .
