Beginning with legendary French house duo, Justice‘s, unexpected single and ending with a track from ever-powerful,ย ever-changingย guitar god, Jeff Beck‘s, newest album, this week’s edition of TTย has something for everyone.ย
Justice –ย Safe and Sound
After making fans waitย 5 years,ย ย Justice made it feel like Christmas came early this week when they finally droppedย new material. The release calls for a celebration for two reasons: 1/ the song is undoubtedly a French house anthem impending solidification and 2/ it means that it won’t be long until we’re graced with the release of a new Justice album! Sure, Safe and Soundย is noย Genesisย but itย is the furthest thing from being disappointing. Their signature and highly prevalent bass-line comes in around the minute mark and teleports me back to my teenageย years when I first fell in love with their funky bass-heavy sound when D.A.N.C.E took over popular radio stations by storm. Although you can pin this track as aย Justiceย original without hesitation, you can definitely tell how much their sound has evolvedย during their musical hiatus (those futuristic synths, anyone?) and we are loving it.
Diskopunk –ย Fireย
While we’re on the topic of funky bass-lines, the one underlying this hidden Nu-Disco gem is so infectious that you can’t help but bop around regardless of whether you’re standing up or sitting down. If I haven’t already mentioned it in a previous TT post, I must confess that I’m a huge sucker for descending chord progressions and the one featured in the chorus of Fireย is phenomenal and without question the highlight of the entire song.
Kacy Hill – Lion
This one is a little on the slower end of the spectrum, but explosive and emotionally captivating nonetheless. Who knew that this formerย Yeezusย model secretly possessed such a unique voice and strong song-writing capabilities? The slow, rhythmic build-up paired with Hill‘s seemingly effortless falsetto makes for a truly exciting listening experience.ย Kacy Hill is definitely one to watch as the rest of the year unfolds.
Jeff Beck –ย Live in the Dark
It took every single muscle in my body to restrain myself from attempting to do 100 backflips when this album finally hit the shelves. After listening to it on loop for 3 days, the only thought that continually lingered on my mind wasย ‘what a time to be alive’.ย Jeff Beck would be considered the 8th wonder of the world if the criteria to claim that title consisted of being a mystical and superior entity that chose to inhabit an empty vessel as a medium to deliver other -worldly music to us petty humans (we’re not worthy). ย 72 and still rocking, Beck proves that age is utterly insignificant when it comes to a true musician’s insatiable desire to create ground-breaking records. This track is exemplary of his ability to gain inspiration from trendsย in modern music to change up his style and use it to evolve in a way that appeals to fans from hisย Yardbirdย years, those who swear by ‘Blow by Blow’,ย and those whose eyes have just been opened to the legend that isย Jeff Beck.
