Review: God Bless Madlib’s Bad Neighbor

Over the past few years, Madlib has widened the pool of emcees he chooses to work with.

Not only has that resulted in the release of exceptional records, but the exposure has done wonders for the beat konducta’s already elite production. Bringing together MED and Blu is a step into left field in of itself. MED’s style is eccentric, his voice melds with instrumentals and his inflection is akin to an artificial synth. Blu is very much a classic emcee, with the foresight and talent to keep one foot in the golden era without losing a modern edge. Having these emcees side by side over Madlib beats is the equivalent of tying together different eras of music.

I honestly feel that every artist on this project tossed in as much effort as they could, which considering their collective talent, was the only necessary factor for a good record. MED and Blu trade verses like NBA players doing three man weave drills. Madlib fills in the background with his usual stunning production, and while the emcees aren’t necessarily too cohesive across the project when it comes to content, Madlib’s production acts as that crucial link. It takes this project from a spitter-ific tape to a beautiful record any fan can vibe to.
