The Iconic Portuguese Winery Makes Its Long-Awaited US Debut
A landmark occasion for the wine industry took place this past October: Herdade do Peso formally announced the relaunch of its brand in the United States. Celebrated throughout Portugal for one of the most refined and delicious wine portfolios in the region, Peso’s acclaimed wines are now accessible to U.S. enthusiasts through its distribution partner, Evaton.ย And to celebrate this occasion, Herdade do Peso hosted an intimate dinner party in New York City.ย This monumental event allowed guests to try their wines – which marked them as being some of the first people to try Peso wines on U.S. soil.
Guests gathered at Manuela in New York City for an exclusive, family-style dinner celebrating the US arrival of Herdade Do Peso wines. The evening was structured around deliberate pairings, showcasing the versatility of these new Portuguese imports.
The first course featured two standout vintages: the Herdade Do Peso Revelado 2019 and the Revelado 2021. These full-bodied, complex wines were poured alongside savory plates like the dry-aged beef tartare with Calabrian chili and black garlic aioli, and a chicories salad with pear, candied walnuts, and Von Trapp blue cheese.
The Revelado wines were rich and layered, presenting prominent notes of black plums, gooseberries, and baking spices like nutmeg. They also delivered a distinctive sharpness, akin to a subtle black pepper taste. Their complex tannins and robust character enhanced the savoriness of both dishes.
The highlight of the evening was the Herdade Do Peso Parcelas Red 2019. This beautiful, deep ruby red was paired with a spectacular course of roasted lamb saddle (served with romesco, sumac, and spiced eggplant) and dayboat scallops with roasted corn and ‘nduja peppers.
Though the food was delicious, the Parcelas Red truly commanded attention. This full-bodied wine burst with initial flavors of blueberry and violet, rounded out by subtle, refreshing hints of fresh mint and menthol. It possessed a strong personality and delivered bright, lingering flavors that stood up beautifully to the richness of the main course.
The exquisite meal concluded with a 30-year-old tawny port, offering guests a final, decadent taste of Portugal right here in New York City. Every bottle poured that night reflected the intense care and masterful craft of Herdade do Peso, a quality evident in every memorable sip.
โAt Herdade do Peso, we work in harmony with the land, respecting each grape variety and vine, with minimal intervention winemakingย that emphasizes the essence of our grapes,โ says Luis Cabral de Almeida, winemaker for Herdade do Peso. โThrough micro-zoning, we maximize the diversity of our soils, the different sun exposures, and the cool nights of Vidigueira, giving rise to elegant, complexย and refreshing Alentejo wines.โย
