On June 11, the highly beloved four members of the legendary rock group Metallica stepped out in New York City for the world premiere of their new documentary, Metallica Saved My Life, at the 2025 Tribeca Festival. Held at the grand BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, the scene was electric with hundreds of fans attending the red carpet premiere to see frontman James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo up close and personal.

The inspiring 120-minute film documents the life-changing impact of the heavy metal band’s influence on their worldwide fans. Through genuine, emotional testimonies from devoted followers, along with exclusive insights from the band, the movie intertwines stories of the group and the individuals whose lives have been changed by their music. The powerful themes of family, identity, redemption, loss, and salvation are prevalent in the doc.

Being a regular guy, that’s who we are at the end of the day, and [fame], this is all wonderful dust. It’s not real, so we try to stay as grounded as possible, and this movie shows how we are really the same as our fans,” Hetfield told reporters at the premiere. “They’ve got a great story to tell … such deep, emotional stories.”

Directed by Grammy-winning filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund, Metallica Saved My Life showcases fans from 23 different countries telling their personal stories and memories about how their life changed due to Metallica. Åkerlund is no stranger to the band. He previously directed numerous Metallica music videos, including 1998’s “Turn The Page,” 1999’s “Whiskey in the Jar,” and 2016’s “ManUNkind.”

Following the debut screening, the guys from Metallica participated in a lively Q&A session. “We’re turning the spotlight away from us and on to the fans and celebrating how unique our fanbase is and all those great human beings,” Ulrich said. “And this is really ultimately about trying to break down that barricade that separates a band from its audience and trying to celebrate the oneness of all of it and how we’re all in it together and how we all are Metallica together.”

With an intimate look at how their music has helped individuals overcome personal challenges, and celebrating the enduring bond between Metallica and their devoted fanbase, the film is not to be missed. The doc is expected to be released later this year, so check it out.
